Open letter - lauren jauregui

1. The main idea of this text is a bisexual Cuban-American writing an open letter to Donald
Trump and his supporters.
2. Connections I can make with this text with other texts is the outrage against Donald
Trump.
a. “Your words are worthless, because your actions have led to the single-handed
destruction of all the progress we've made socially as a nation.”
3. The author’s purpose to inform the general public that Trump’s political campaign was
built on lies and hatred.
4. The audience is right-wing of America’s political system.
a. Jauregui addresses Donald Trump’s supporters multiple times in the open letter.
b. The choice of audience affects the text because she is implying that ALL trump supports
are full with hate and ignorant.
5. The most relevant details the uses to argue their position is when she mentions that the
president’s campaign was built on lies.
6. The most prevalent in the writing is Pathos.
a. “Your words are worthless, because your actions have led to the single-handed
destruction of all the progress we've made socially as a nation” (Jauregui).
b. “You voted for a person who built an 18-month campaign off the back of your hatred”
(Jauregui).
c. “He manipulated ALL of you with such ease by speaking to the darker parts of you that
had started to feel ashamed about the way you viewed the ‘politically correct’ world”
(Jauregui).
d. The author exercises her credibility by being a well-respected entertainer.
7. A possible theme would be abuse of power.
a. “You have, with your pure ignorance and refusal to understand the way the government
and the world works, allowed a power-hungry business tycoon to take over the United
States of America” (Jauregui).
b. “He became your champion, because he spoke to the parts of you that think you are
superior to the rest of us (just like Hitler did in Germany before the Holocaust! Just read
his autobiography: Mein Kampf)...” (Jauregui).
c. “He manipulated ALL of you with such ease...” (Jauregui).
8. This text helps me understand the topic addressed by showing me the ignorance a person
will have if their morals are backed with hatred.
9. One element I would change about the text would be target on Trump supporters and
only target Trump.
a. This would affect the meaning of the text by only addressing him since he is causing
most of the “damage”.

10.
Donald Trump’s campaign was based on lies and he manipulated his followers. He has
lies several times to his supporters at his rallies across America. “...allowed a power-hungry
business tycoon to take over the United States of America.” The author is saying that the right-
wing allowed this man to take power even though he had bad intentions. Donald Trump is a
power-hungry man and will do anything to keep his status.
