Non Fiction Response: David Bowie documentary

1. David Bowie has always been fascinating. As a child, he showed a great passion for the

arts. He worked really hard to become famous. His legacy will live on.

2. I can connect this documentary to other documentaries I have seen about David Bowie.

In addition, I love his music.

3. The director’s purpose was to inform the viewer that that David Bowie was an excellent

artist. All the interviews lead me to believe that.

4. The audience is everyone. The director wanted to prove that David Bowie was amazing.

The choice of audience, along with the purpose, give the impression that Bowie was an

amazing person.

5. The most relevant details are all the interviews with David and with those who knew him.

6. Ethos is the most prevalent in the writing. The author uses credibility by using interviews

to support their claims.

a. “He wasn’t a sort of artist, chiseling away at the coal face of creativity. It just

seemed to flow out of him,” (Harris).

b. “He was more into the craft of being onstage than any rock star I’ve ever worked

with,” (Lawrence).

c. “David Bowie will be remembered for his astounding musical career, but he

pushed financial as well as musical boundaries,” (Anderson).

7. The three previous quotes indicate that ‘you are nothing without the people that support

you’ is a theme in the documentary.

8. This gave me an insight into several aspect of David Bowie’s private life.

9. I would have tried to interview David Bowie’s children. It would have made the

documentary seem less like a telling of his career and add more of a personal touch to it.

10. OPTION 2: David Bowie was a remarkable man, well-recognized for his many talents.

He is well-recognized for his many talents because many people helped him become

famous by supporting him every step of the way. For example, a friend of David’s for

many years remembered when she first met David: “David invited me into his parents’

basement. Then, I was fourteen…” (Gillespie). This shows how long they had been

friends for. They remained close friends, supporting each other, until the day of his death.

When people support you, anything is possible.
