Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
Goals:
Students will gain a better understanding of what happened during the Civil War and
how it impacted the United States
Students will learn about important individuals involved in the Civil War and how they
influences the war.

Objectives:
Content/Knowledge:
Students will identify important & influential people at the time of the Civil War in the
US
Students will be able to create a timeline of events that occurred during the Civil War
Students will be able to understand how the events of the civil war affected the
United States

Process/Skills:
Students will be able to identify influential events and people during the Civil War

Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences

Rationale:
The Civil War was a significant part of United States history and helped to shape us
into the nation we are today. it is important for students to have knowledge of the
events that occurred during this time and the people that had a significant impact on
the war. Students also should be aware of the aftermath of the Civiil War and how it
affected our country.

2. SS.H.3.5: Explain probable causes and effects of events and developments in U.S. history.

Describe the teaching and learning activity, and identify the resources/
materials needed.

Students will create a timeline with 2-3 events that led up


to the Civil War, 2-3 events that occurred during the war,
and 2-3 events that happened after the Civil War.

Students will be split up into groups of 4. Two students


will be the North and two students will be the South of the
United States. Groups will do brief research on viewpoints
of each side, and then have a debate or discussion on their
differing views and why the South wanted to secede from
the North.

Describe the teaching and learning activity, and identify the resources/
materials needed.

In this activity, students will examine music played during


the Civil War by the North and the South that was used to
rally troops and the public. After listening to both songs,
they will write a brief paragraph of how these songs could
have been used to influence people and get them to join
the army or boost confidence in people.

Describe the teaching and learning activity, and identify the resources/
materials needed.

Students will be using a visual organizer to show the flow


and chain of events of the Civil War. The Flow chart will
contain information of events that preceded the civil war,
and then move into significant events or battles during
the war, events that led to the end of the Civil War, and
events or things that occurred as a result of the Civil War
ending.

Students will act out a Reader’s Theatre skit about the


Civil War. They will each be assigned a role to play in the
skit.

Students will get a partner or small group and have to pick


one important and/or influential person involved in the
Civil War to to brief research on and write a one-two
paragraph biography about them and how they influenced
the war.

Students will be writing a letter. They will pretend as if


they were a soldier fighting in the Civil War and write a
letter to their parents about how they’re feeling about the
war and what its like.

materials needed.

Students will use an online tool to look into how weather


affected the Civil War. How generals used the stars and
skies, how soldiers had to endure extreme weather, and
many other ways it affected the war.
