Product Abstract
Each student in the Independent Research Program must carry out an authentic, advanced research project, which is
capable of being evaluating its quality, authenticity, and novelty. The following information written by the student
provides an overview of the product proposal as planned.

Research Title: Can I Eat That? Finding the Allergy Solution
Purpose: To examine the ethics and efficacy of oral immunotherapy in immunoglobulin-E mediated allergies and to
assess oral immunotherapy’s potential as a clinical treatment for allergies.
Product/Outcomes: A research paper and a website were produced as a result of the research conducted. A display
board was presented to increase awareness of oral immunotherapy and allergy treatment. A presentation was given.
to the advanced placement biology class to share findings.
Novelty of Product: Although food allergies have increased in incidence for the last twenty years, there are no
approved clinical treatment, other than avoidance. An upcoming treatment for immunoglobulin-E mediated food
allergies is oral immunotherapy; however, it comes with high risk. This research analyzes oral immunotherapy as @
potential clinical treatment for food allergies.
‘Audience: The intended audience of the product is allergy patients, families that need to gain awareness of the
subject, and scholarly researchers of the subject.
Process:
1. Intensively researched topics related to food allergy treatment, eventually decided on oral
immunotherapy as my topi
2. Located an advisor: Ms. Kim Mudd, the Senior Research Nurse/Program Coordinator at Johns Hopkins
University-Division of Pediatric Allergy.
3. Gathered and reviewed articles, scholarly journals, and clinical studies focused on the topic, and
compiled over 25 annotations of scholarly articles.
4, Conducted interviews with Ms. Mudd and Dr. Glenn M. Silber M.D, an allergist at the Allergy &
‘Asthma Center of Central Maryland in order to gain more information and clarify any questions.
5. Synthesized all information into a paper.
6. Gathered data with a literature review of three studies observing the effect of oral immunotherapy on
adolescents with immunoglobulin-E mediated peanut allergies.
7. Presented finding with a visual display board and website in regards to the topic.
