Rationale

This energy unit is designed for students in third grade. Throughout the unit,

students will have the opportunity to explore the different components of energy;

including light, sound, and heat. The purpose for this energy unit is for students to

obtain knowledge of how energy is found in objects and how motion is created. The

students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of light, sound, and heat through

various hands on manipulatives such as tuning forks and light prisms to explore how

each element of energy is created and changed. The lessons provided will incorporate

science as well as mathematics, specifically measurement. Students will also have the

opportunity to actively participate in experiments that depict and create the forms of

energy. The standard for this unit is provided below.

Explore energy’s ability to cause motion or create change.
Explore how energy can be found in moving objects, light, sound, and heat.
