Assignment 1 : (b)

1. What is calibration? How calibration procedures can be classified.

2. What is precision and accuracy?
3. A speed test of a car was conducted on a track of length 2000 m±10 cm. The time taken by the
car to cover this track was (0.8 ± 0.2)s. Determine the speed of car and its uncertainty.
4. A rectangular steel beam is used as a force measuring device by applying a force F at the free
end and correlating this with the deflection δ measured at the free-end by means of an LVDT.
The dimension of the beam are

Length, L= (50±0.5)mm

Breath, b =(8.20±0.1)mm

Thickness, t =(4.1±0.1)mm

Determine the applied force F and its uncertainty if the deflection at the free-end way found to
be (0.8mm±2% of δ). Take the modulus of elasticity E of the beam as 2.07x1011 N/m2 and use
Eb t 3
the following relation for force and deflection at the free-end of the cantilever as F= δ
4 L3

5. Define the following words

a. Resolution
b. Threshold
c. Static Sensitivity
d. Dead band
e. backlash
