Humans can be deceiving when it comes to topics debating whether we are good or evil

as a whole society and race in general. Humans have learned over time to coincide with one
another and we have all adjusted to a “system”. To be more specific we all have adjusted to
recognizing what is evil and what is good. We have all learned throughout our lives of what is
good and what is bad so when certain things such as the holocaust come into play and eventually
become a vital part of our history that has helped shape this “system”. Obviously since this
“system” was developed by humans there are flaws and in those flaws we question whether
certain things are good or evil.
In Night on page 32 I quote, “He seemed to be telling the truth. Not far from us, flames,
huge flames, were rising from a ditch. Something was being burned there. A truck drew close
and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes… children
thrown into the flames. (Is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep tends to elude me?). This is a
prime example of what us humans can label as “evil”. Something like this, murder is what we
call evil or an evil thing to do.
“Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget
that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I
forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust.
Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.”
This quote from Night shows the feeling that humans have developed as a part of this what you
can almost describe as a “fictional system”. The reason why we have all these feelings towards
subjects like these is because we can recognize these feelings with good or evil this is also shown
more prominently towards the end of Night..."From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back
at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me." Chapter 9, pg. 109 and
on page 107 "After my father's death, nothing could touch me any more." Chapter 9, pg. 107.
These are more examples of how humans associate certain feelings with certain actions and
circumstances. There is a reason why we don't associate happiness with murder (usually)or
associate sadness when someone is born for instance (usually).
In conclusion as humans we have developed this “system” and this “system” can keep
humans to not only associate certain feelings with certain actions and we can all define ourselves
as good or evil in our lives but certain instances like in Night, can keep us questioning a
“system” like this.
