Discussion

Influence line can be defined as a line representing moment, shear force,

reaction or displacement at a section of a beam when a unit of load moves on a beam.
In this experiment, simple supported beam was used, and the result of shear force
and moment were taken. The shear force and moment value were taken before and
after the section. Then it was calculated for the experiment influence line value and
compared with the calculated theoretical influence line value.
The load applied was 1N and the results for experimental influence line are
achieved by the equation shear force divided by load applied. Based on the result, the
condition for before section, at 0.33m from the left support, the experimental influence
line value was 0.3. Meanwhile, for the condition after section at the distance of 0.82m
from the left support, the value for experiment influence line is 0.1. However, the value
for theoretical influence line at before and after section is -0.37 and 0.09. As the load
was moving near to the support, the shear force will increase and as it moves away, it
will decrease.
The same load was applied hence the moment value was obtained and from
that, the experimental influence line value was calculated by dividing it with the load
applied. The experimental influence line value and the moment value at distance of
0.21m from the left support is 0.035 and 0.035Nm. The theoretical influence line value
was 0.067. Meanwhile, the experimental influence line and moment value for distance
at 0.64m from the left support is 0.0175 and 0.0175Nm. However, the theoretical
influence line value was 0.206. The theoretical influence line was increasing as it
moves further for the support.
Based on the experimental influence line and theoretical influence line result,
there were differences in the value. This shown that errors may happen during the
experiment such as the dial gauge was not being set to zero properly as it was
sensitive. Furthermore, error such as miss calculation may happen too and effect the
theoretical result. Precautions should be taken during the experiment so that the error
happened will be small and not affecting.
