Introduction:

In the design of foundations is important to know the soil properties such as groundwater
pressure, moisture content, and other important information. Therefore, the in-situ soil testing
methods are very important for providing this information (VertekCPT, 2014). In this paper we
explain one of the in-situ methods: the field vane shear test. This test is a quick and economical in-
situ method for calculating the undrained shear strength of soft to medium stiff clays. The test
involves a vane with four blades that is inserted into the clay (Anbazhagan, p. 19). In this paper we
will be discussing the concepts, uses, the procedure and calculations involving this test.
