AISECT TUTORIALS : MATHEMATICS : SET-1 CHAPTER - 1 TRIGONOMETRICAL RATIOS AND FUNCTIONS 1, Some Important Definitions and formutae- (1) Measurement of angles:- The angle are smecasured in degrees, grades or in radians which are defined as Follows— Degrees. A right angle is divided into 90 equal parts and each partis called adegree. Thusaright angle is equal to 90 degress. One d noted by 1°. inde A degree is divided into sixty equal parts and cach partis called a minute. One minute is de- noted by 1 ‘A minute is divided into sixty equal parts and each partis called a second. One second is de- noted by 1” Thus, 1 right angled = 90° (Read as 90 degrees) 1° =60 (Read as 60 minutes) 60)” (Read as 60 seconds) Grades- 4 right angle is divided into 100 oqual parts and each partis called a grade, Thus a right angle isequal to 100 grades. One grade is denoted by I. A grade is divided into 100 equal parts and each part and euch partis called a minute and is de- noted by 1" ‘A minute is divided into 100 equal parts and each partis called a second and is denoted by 1”. Thus, 1 right angled 100+ (Read as 100 grades) = 100" Read as 100 minutes) a) 1° = 100” (Read as 100 seconds) Radians- Ar dian is the angle subtended at the conte of a circle by an are equal in Bt Pe length to the ra dis of the circle, In the adjacent figure 04= 08 areAC. of ZAOC is one radian and denoted by I*. Thus ZA0c Figs radius of circle, then measurement 2) A constant Number # - The ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a citcle is a ‘ways equal to a constant and this constant is ‘denoted by the Greek letter = Circumference ofa ice , Ckounferenee of Ac g (ops) ‘The constant an imational number and ite ipa ti een, rate value to six decimals places is taken as Tr (3) Relation between an are and an angle- If Gis the of acicle of radius then length of the are of the igle in radians atthe vertex of a sector sector = Angle subtended by the semi-circular are at its centre = 180° = 5" = radians Thus, we have r radians = 180* = 2 right angles.
