B) ANSWER TWO (2) QUESTIONS IN PART B THIS PAPER CONTAINS OF SEVEN (7) PAGES CONFIDENTIAL ai BDA31103 PART A: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS ‘Two disks of radius rand rz and mass m; and mz are mounted in series with steel shafts as shown in FIGURE Ql. The shaft between the base and m; has length Li and the shaft from my to mz has length Lz. The shafts have cross section polar moments of inertia, Ji and J2. They also have shear moduli, Gi and Ge, The torsional spring constant of each shaft is given by: ‘The mass moments of inertia of the disks are given: Linerd ce h=jmy = hm ‘The disks rotate about the OZ. axis. The physical properties are: gm? and. k,, = 4000N —m/radian For the systems shown in FIGURE QU: (a) Derive the equations of motion of the system (5 marks) (b) Obtain the natural frequencies and relative amplitudes (10 marks) (c) Determine the mode shapes (10 marks) Q @ @ (b) (©) BDA31103 ‘Name and explain the three components of a general n system, (5 marks) One of the first steps in the design of a system for noise reduction is to establish the acoustic criteria for the physical situation. Name three of these acoustic criteria and their applications. (10 marks) A reverberant room has dimensions of 6m width by 10m length by 4 m height. The measured reverberation time for the room is 3.50 seconds. ‘The air in the room is at 300K (27°C) and 101.3 kPa, at which condition the speed of sound is 347.2 m/s. The measured sound pressure level in the 500 Hz octave band due to the noise from pump in the room is 65 dB. Determine the sound power level for the pump in the 500 Hz octave band. (10 marks) PART B : ANSWER TWO (2) QUESTION ONLY ‘A model is given as shown in FIGURE Q3. Perform the following analysis. (a) (b) (©) Draw the free body diagrams and use Newton’s Law to derive the equation of motion for the given system in FIGURE Q3 and write in matrix form. (5 marks) Simplify the equation of motion. (7 marks) Assume m=1kg and K=1000 N/m, determine the approximate fundamental natural frequency of the system shown in FIGURE Q3 using Rayleigh’s method (13 marks) cag (a) (b) ©) BDA31103 ‘Name and explain the two major areas of concem for the human effects of vibration (5 marks) If we apply the mechanical vibration theory to determine all the vibration related properties of a mechanical system (natural frequencies, vibration modes, frequency response function, etc), why do we still have to conduct vibration measurement in practical vibration engineering? List five (5) of the reasons and explain. (10 marks) When a washing machine of mass 200 kg and an unbalance 0.02 kg-m, is mounted ‘on an isolator, the isolator will deflects by 5 mm under the static load. Find: (The amplitude of the washing machine (5 marks) ii) The force transmitted to the foundation at the operating speed of 1200 rpm (5 marks) BDA31103 QS (@) Define: i) Hearing loss ii) Temporary threshold shift (TTS) ii) Noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) (5 marks) (b) An employee works I hour where the sound level is 90 dBA. The worker inspects gauges and other items for 2 hours where the sound level is 92 dBA. A total of 3 94 dBA. The remaining 2 hours are spent in a relatively quiet office area where the sound level is hours is spent in an area around a compressor where the sound level 60 dBA. Justify whether this employee's noise exposure in violation of the OSHA regulations.
