The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) has projected shrimp exports to continue
gathering momentum this year, particularly in the EU and China.
Vietnam’s biggest competition in the bloc are India and Ecuador, he noted, adding that Indian shrimp exports to the
EU might fall and face a ban due to antibiotics problems. Vietnamese products could be a potential replacement, he
said. Ho Quoc Luc, head of the Sao Ta food company, pointed to small and scattered production models that make it
hard to trace origins, while food safety requirements are being tightened in key import markets. To fulfill the
requirements, Vietnamese exporters must focus on quality assessment of materials, which could cause prices to
increase and reduce competitiveness.
In that context, the building of international-standard material areas for shrimp export is key to growing the sector.-

Among bold targets announced by Indian officials during the India
International Seafood Show (IISS) recently were the increasing of seafood
exports to $10 billion, and shrimp production to 1 million metric tons, by
2020. Andhra Pradesh dominates production

Future growth may hinge on Andhra Pradesh, on India’s east coast, which produced
406,000 metric tons of vannamei shrimp in India in 2016/17, or 73% of total Indian
vannamei output, according to figures presented by Sait.

It produced another 2,000t of black tiger shrimp (monodon).

Overall, India produced 600,000t of shrimp in 2016/17, according to Sait.

Other regions are growing fast, but are presently still relatively small producers
compared with Andhra Pradesh. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha (see table
below) -- also on the east coast -- largely produced the remaining 27% of vannamei.
The biggest among them -- Tamil Nadu -- produced 40,500t.

According to the forecast presented during GOAL organized by Global Aquaculture Alliance
(GAA) , an international, non-profit trade association dedicated to advancing responsible
aquaculture, held this year in Guangzhou, China, aquaculture shrimp production in India will
be less than 0.6 million tonne during 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The report seconds the Marine Products Export Development Authority’s (MPEDA) plan
that is betting big on aquaculture diversification, quality control, value addition and improved
production infrastructure to achieve an marine product exports of USD 5.6 billion in 2016-
17, after a slump in exports in the last fiscal.

India targets to achieve an export turnover of $10 billion by the year 2020.
