Self-assessment: My Personal History with Reading and Writing

Writing for me has always been something that I have struggled with, but I always try to

push myself, so I can grow as a writer. The central strategies of my writing process are to first

familiarize myself with the prompt or issue at hand. I begin by writing down a very brief outline

of what I will be addressing and then I slowly start to add onto the outline and map out how I

want to construct my paper and think about how it will flow. This outline technique began back

in 1st grade when they gave us the “sandwich method” to

writing a paragraph but as I have grown up I have also

adapted the outline to my needs. I then begin to write my

1st draft of the essay and I know that it will not be perfect

by the end of this 1st draft. Writing 39B has taught me the

importance of writing multiple drafts and it has become

part of my writing process. Since the end of my writing

39B class I have started to write about 2 or 3 drafts before

my final draft because I have seen that the quality of my

writing has dramatically improved since I adapted that

technique.

I have applied the many useful techniques I have learned in writing 39B in other classes.

Just last quarter, I was taking

Anthropology 49A and we had to

write a paper about historiography

and I used the multiple draft

technique, as well as, being able to

identify who my audience was and

identify an appropriate way to get

my readers attention. In

engineering, writing isn’t

something that is done daily but

there were some occasions in which my professor would assign us for homework to write an

essay over a certain reaction or chemical process as well as

how engineers work life was composed. I felt that these

papers were more technical-based and less opinionated, on

the other hand, writing 39B allowed me to branch out and

write other type of papers that weren’t so scientific.

Hopefully, writing 39C helps me learn how to develop a well

written research paper, because in my opinion this type of writing is used heavily in my major

and will be asked of me and the future and knowing that I will have some background in the

construction of such papers gives me an assurance that I know what to do.
