Assignment 4 ME253- Manufacturing Technology Due Date: 21-4-18

1. Determine the maximum possible reduction for cold rolling a 300mm thick slab when
μ=0.08 and the roll diameter is 600mm. What is the maximum possible reduction on the
same mill for hot rolling when μ=0.5?
2. An annealed copper strip 228 mm wide and 25 thick, is rolled to a thickness of 20mm in
one pass. The roll radius is 300 mm and the rolls rotate at 100 rpm. Calculate the roll
force and the power required in this operation.
3. A solid cylindrical slug made of 304 stainless steel is 150 mm in diameter and 100 mm
high. It is reduced in height by 50% at room temperature, by open-die forging with flat
dies. Assuming that the coefficient of friction is 0.2, calculate the forging force at the end
of the stroke. [Yf = 1000 MPa].
4. A round millet made of 70-30 brass is extruded at a temperature of 675 °C. The billet
diameter is 125mm and the diameter of the extrusion is 50 mm. Calculate the extrusion
force required.
5. Determine the drawing stress to produce a 20% reduction in a 10mm stainless steel
wire. The flow stress is given by 0 = 1300 0.3. Die angle is 12° and μ=0.09.
6. Estimate the force required for a 90-degree bending of St 50 Steel of 2-mm thickness in a
V die. The die opening can be taken as eight times the thickness. The length of the bent
part is 1m. UTS=500 MPa.
7. Calculate the bending force required for a 1.5 mm C50 steel sheet of width 1, to be bent
in a wiping die. The die radius is 3mm. UTS=800 MPa.
