STRAINER vs FILTER Strainer is a device to filter solid particle in fluid flow with maximum up to 150 micron (120 mesh) size ofits screen element only. The screen element consist ofa perforated plate with additional lined mesh made ofstainless steel material and this type of basket screen element is a cleanable type. Pertorated Soren Filter is device to filter solid particle in fluid flow up to 2 or 5 micron size. The screen element consist of a stainless steel perforation and a bag filter inside it. When the bag fitter is dirty (clogged by the dirt/solid particles), we have to replace it with anew one (non cleanable type) Mesh - Inch - Micro Meshea/Lineal Inch US and ASTM Std, Sieve No, Actual Opening Inches Microne n Conversion Chart Meshes/Lineal inch US and ASTM Std, Sieve No. Actual Opening Inches Microne 70 12 14 16 18 20 24 30 35 40 50 60 70 80 OS T505 1080 1524 051 1295 045 1143 039 991 034 864 028 mm ‘020 508, cote 457 015 381 ott 279 ‘008 229 1008 203 ‘007 178 006 152 ‘0046 417, 730 140 150 160 170 180 200 250 300 400 120 x 400 80 x 700 200 x 600 165 x 1400 200 x 1400 825 x 2300 ‘0045 TOS ‘0042 107 ‘0041 toe .0038 a7 (0035 39 0033 84 :0029 74 ‘0024 61 0018 46 ‘0015 (0016 (0012 (0010 (0007 (0004 0002 For exampl 40 mesh is equal with 381 microns (micrometer) The hole opening = 0.015 inch = 0.38 mm STRAINER Strainers are mostly used in liquid (water/oil) pump- ing application. The strainers are used to protect piping equipment such as: valves, flow meter etc. The most important thing, we have to choose the right strainer. If the strainer sizing is not proper, for example it creates high pressure drop, the motor of the pump will suffer, because it will work very hard. Ihe other thing, the electricity consumption ot the pump will be high too. Hae STRAINER’s SCREEN forated sci re formed by punching a large number of holes ina flat sheet of the required material using a multiple punch. The perforated sheetis then rolled into a tube and spot welded together. ‘These are relatively coarse screens and hole sizes typically range from 0.8 mm to 3.2 mm. Consequently, perforated screens are only suitable for removing general pipe debris. Mesh screens - Fine wire is formed into a grid or mesh arrangement. This is then ‘commonly layered over a perforated screen, which acts as a support cage for the mesh. Primary element screen Perforation The most common material for screen per- foration is stainless steel material, For example: Perforation with 1/8" hole diameter There are 32 holes in the area of 1 sq.inch There are 40 % open area (holes area com- pared with total area of the screen) Perforat cms anyar) (28% Open are) (Gest pen area) (41% Open Aiea) Goh Open rea) 1'@ ot see 2 ,@aea@.t 32 Hola!9q. in 33 Holesi5q In ie Hotss9 8 Hoes, In 4% Open Ares) (53% Open Are) (Ste Open Ave) \22% Open hea) Secondary element screen b) Wire mesh ‘Sometimes customer needs the screen of a strainer lined with wire mesh The screen consists of a perforated stainless steel lined with an extra wire mesh For example: Mesh 100 There are 100 X 100 = 10,000 holes in 1 sq.inch The hole diameter = 0.005 inch There is 30.3 % open area (holes area compared with the total area of the screen) ESIC eee) "Vaz" Openings 160" Openings isu" Openings 0.009" Openings 0.007 Openings 0.005" Openings een 30 Mesh “40 Mesh Mean ‘20 Mesh 300 Maan Open Area) (418 OpenAvea) (96% Open area) BIN Open Area) (BIN 2) (30% Open area Suggested perforations mtoer | 092 2H tot % 3 up % loz 2m 106 up Kid 208 % 102 2n we up %t02 ats 3 Bun 1752" Tt 038 24 up areh V1 009 Pats ra up Tro “Mean Lined Screens — sea pane 4 Y-STRAINER x -strainers are commonly used in pressurized lines, gas, steam or liquid, but also can be used Jn suction or vacuum conditions ‘They are intended for applications where small amounts of solid particles are expected and where clean out will be in-frequent A blow down valva on tha drain port will allow elaan out without ramoval of the scraan and without interupting the process flow Open area of a (cast) Y-strainer is approximately +/- 1.5 times of the intorna! nina hole area of the same size. It is only for water (Sp Gr = 1.0 and viscosity 1.0) Itcannot be used for steam or gasiair But can be used for any liquid with different viscosity. Allached also a correction factor data for differant viscasity and for extra wire mesh. For example: ‘We use 2" Y-strainer for diesel fuel with 200 SSU viscosity and 40 mesh lined wire mesh. Flow rate = 80 Gpm. How many psi is the pressure drop ? From the flow rate vs pressure drop chart, at 80 Gpm flow rate, the pres- pressure drop is 1.30 psi. (THIS IS THE PRESSURE DROP WHEN THE SCREEN IS STILL CLEAN) Since the viscosity is 200 SSU, the corrected pressure drop = 1.30 X 1.30 = 2.69 psi Since there is an extra 40 mesh lined wire mesh, corrected pressure drop = 1.61 x 1.30 = 2.09 psi Watch out for pressure differential (pressure drop) While strainer housings are deigned to withstand pressures far in excess of their rated maximum, operating pressures, this is not true of baskets. Very few strainer baskets will stand high pressure differentials through them. Ina strainer rated at 150 psi, for example, if used with a line pressure of 150 psi and if the basket is completely clogged, the pressure differential across it is equal to the full line pressure, in this case 150 psi. Under these conditions, the basket will probably break. Generally the amount of pressure baskets will stand when they are fully plugged is considerably less than the maximum strainer rated operating pressure. The larger the basket, the less differential pressure it will take. There are specially made, reinforced baskets available which will take higher differential pressure. Watch out for pressure differential (pressure drop) For maximum efficiency, a differential pressure gauge installed across the inlet and outlet will indicate pressure loss due to clogging and may be used as a guide to determine when cleaning is required. Normally, when differential pressure reaches 5-10psi, screen must be cleaned. Pressure Ifthe Y-strainer is equipped ‘eave with a blow off connection, ‘The screen can thus be cleaned by simply opening then closing the blow off plug. We can also install a blow out (drain) vaive at the blow out connection of the Y-strainer. So itis easy for us to clean the strainer without shutting off the flow or disassembling the strainer. When to clean the basket ? Strainer baskets should be cleaned on a regular basis, not when they become clogged, to insure that they are not damaged by too high a differential pressure. Another reason for frequent cleaning is a phenomenon known as ?runaway buildup?. As dirt in a strainer basket accumulates and as the mesh or perforations plug up, pressure drop increases. The curve of this pressure difference is not a straight line. It starts out as a low slope, but as the basket clogs more and more it turns upward faster and faster. As the dirt builds up the free open area in the basket gets smaller and smaller. All conditions in the basket ate now working faster and faster to decrease the flow passage and to increase drag on the liquid flowing through the basket. Dirt is being brought faster to the passages ‘that are open and they are being shut faster. Liquid velocity and pressure inside the basket build up faster and the whole thing keeps accelerating. It is similar to a fire in that it progresses with increasing speed. It means that a good flow of liquid can slow to a trickle or stop quickly. It also means that full line Pressure is now Drought to bear across the basket, and as pointed out before, if this is high, breakage can occur. Good maintenance procedure dictates that basket be cleaned or changed before they can become clogged. Most strainer users do this at standard intervals, whether the basket are ready for cleaning or not. Of course, the most obvious indication that a basket need changing is a drop in flow through the line. In closed systems this | not always so easy to notice. In these cases installation of a pressure gauge on the downstream side of the strainer will point out drop in flow or pressure. Better yet, two gauges, one on either side of the strainer, will indicate pressure drop through the unit and show whether the basket needs cleaning. The screen isin the form of a basket, with a lifting handle, 's0 that all particulate captured and retained by the screen can be easily removed for disposal. They are intended for applications where larger amounts of solid particulate are expected, and where clean-out will be frequent. Most models have a standard or optional "Quick Release Cover" to allow fast and easy screen removal without the use of tools.
