Q4. Figure 4 shows a cantilever beam of length 900 mm and I-section (rotated by 90o). The origin of
the (x, y, z) coordinate system is the centre of the cross section at the free end. The given geometric
properties of cross section shown are based on exact calculation (hence do not use thin-wall
approximation). Four forces are applied as follows:
(i) a horizontal force of 120 kN at the origin in the positive x-direction,
(ii) a horizontal force of 25 kN at a point (100, 0, 100) in the negative z-direction, and
(iii) two vertical forces of 8 kN each along the centre lines of the respective flanges in the negative y-
direction.

(a) Determine the normal force (N), shear forces (Vy , Vz) and bending moments (My , Mz) at the
cross section 400 mm away from the fixed end. On the given answer sheet (next page), clearly
show your answers by vectors. Use single headed arrows for force vectors and double headed
arrows for moment vectors.

(b) Determine the state of stress at point S which is on the top face of the web as shown. On the
given answer sheet, clearly show the values and directions of non-zero stress components on the
three visible faces of a cube which represents a differential volume element at point S. (You need
not show the stresses on the hidden faces.)
