The first time | observed her teaching, | could quickly see she had the students and lesson well in hand. When we debriofed, she told me that her Cooperating Tezcher made sure she knew that this was the toughest class she had ever had, Their test scores were low and their behavior challenging. Calah was determined to rise to the challenge in spite of this warning. Not only did she do just that, it was more than magic what she was able to do with this class. She had fun and highly interesting lessons with lets of student engagement. There were two notable incidents of unacceptable behavior. One boy stabbed a classmate with a push pin and \was prohibited from going on field trip. He had already beon suspended numerous times. “Always keeping this student away from positive situations will not allow this student to change,” she reflected. Another student who had had many ‘melt downs’ (throwing things, stealing, disrupting others) has been referred toa Student Study Tear. Calah satin on a meeting with a Behavior Specialist tohear the suggested strategies. During the potentially stressful situation of taking 9 test, she took the student out to the hall At fist, the student was acting cut, and then Calah showered her with encouragement.
