FIRST LONG QUIZ – SET C

(For Class Numbers 8, 11, 16)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
 Write LEGIBLY all necessary solution for every problem for a possible full credit. Unruly/untidy solution will be disregarded.
 BOX your final answer. Do not use pencil in writing your solutions. USE only a non-red- ink pen.
 Always START a problem on a new page. Use short bond papers.

1. The lap joint seen in the figure is fastened by five 2.20-cm diameter rivets. For
P  45 kN , t A  24.5mm , t A  20.5mm determine (a) the maximum shear stress in the rivets;
(b) the maximum bearing stress; and (c) the maximum tensile stress at section a-a. Assume that the
load is divided equally among the rivets.

2. A rod is subjected to the five forces shown in the figure. What is the maximum value of P for the
stresses not to exceed  T  108MPa in tension and  C  138 MPa in compression. The cross-
2 2 2
sectional areas are A1  235mm , A2  935mm , A3  435mm

3. Knowing that the average Tensile stress in a member must not exceed 54 MPa and the average
Compressive stress in a member must not exceed 62 MPa, determine the cross-sectional area of CF
and AE that will yield the most economical and safe design if P  12.8kN and d  2.8m .

4. Link AB is to be made of a steel for which the ultimate normal stress is 440 MPa. Determine the
cross-sectional area for AB if P  28kN and d  0.48m .
5. The frame shown consists of four wooden members, ABC, DEF, BE, and CF. Each member has a 2 ×
4-in. rectangular cross section and each pin has a 0.56 in. diameter. If P  560 lb , (a) determine
the maximum value of the average normal stress in member CF, (b) the shear stress in pin D, and
(c) the bearing stress in member BE.

6. The 4-mm-diameter cable BC is made of a steel with E = 200 GPa. Knowing that the maximum stress
in the cable must not exceed 188 MPa and that the elongation of the cable must not exceed 6 mm,
find the maximum load P that can be applied as shown if x  3m , y  4m , z  4.6m . Also, find
the horizontal displacement of point B.
