Betty was the third child born to Florian Joseph and Bertha Stark. She grew up

During her years at Richmond High School, Betty was involved in various class
activities. She was a member of the honor society, sang in the choir and small choral
groups and held a variety of class offices. She was quite a popular young lady, having
many beaus until she met Richard, the love of her life in a class at UC Berkeley in May
of 1944. Newly commissioned Ensign Laughlin and Betty were married in May 1945
in Richmond, CA just before Dick shipped off on a WW2 troop transport from San
Diego.
As a UC Berkeley student, Betty was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
During her years as both a wife and mom, she participated regularly in local chapters
of the PEO, most notably in San Mateo and Turlock. Known for her gift of hospitality,
Betty was frequently engaged in school, community and church events involving the
service of good food and encouraging conversation.
Richard and Betty were sincerely devoted to one another during their 72 plus
wonderful years together. They began their married life in Berkeley at the end of WW2,
prior to moving to El Cerrito, Bellevue, WA, Walnut Creek, CA, and then San Mateo
where they lived for 50+years. In 2007, they left their “home with a view from the
hill” and retired to Covenant Village, Turlock. They spent many memorable vacations
camping at Yosemite and Pinecrest, time at Glenbrook, NV and Palm Desert with family
and friends. They celebrated anniversaries and birthdays weeks at their special places
in Carmel and Hawaii.
A devoted wife and mother, Betty volunteered her time regularly, served on various
PTA’s at her children’s schools, was a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother. She
was always active in the Presbyterian Churches in Richmond, Berkeley, Walnut Creek,
San Mateo and Turlock participating in Women’s Circle, Mariner activities and service
as a Deacon.
Her hobbies included sewing and various needlework activities, gardening, bridge,
playing the piano and singing in church choirs. As an “empty nester”, she became quite
involved in following the genealogy of her and Richard’s families, which was a passion
that took them on trips to Nova Scotia, Boston, Germany, and Scotland researching
family history.
A service of celebration will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Turlock, 2619
N. Berkeley Ave at 11 am, Saturday, June 30th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
