serving as president of the southern Christian Leadership conference, an
organization operating in every state. " This evidence would appeal to the
clergymen by appealing to their sense of CREDIBILITY because he is a president of
a christian leadership group. The second reason he offers is he is in birmingham
because injustice is here. This reason supports the claim because King knows that
there is injustice there and that it is hurting people. The evidence King uses to
support this reason uses PATHOS when he states, "Just as the prophets of the
eighth century B.C. left in their villages and carried their “thus saith the Lord” far
beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the apostle paul left his
village of tarsus and carried the gospel of jesus christ to the far corners of the greco
roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own
hometowns. " This evidence would appeal to the clergymen by appealing to their
sense of EMOTION/FAITH because it appeals to faith and emotion because it
referred to the bible and clergymen have an attachment to the bible, therefore he is
also appealing to their sense of faith. The last reason he offers is he is cognizant of
the interrelatedness of all communities and states. This reason supports the claim
because it shows that he cares not just for his hometown but everywhere else
where there is injustice.. The evidence King uses to support this reason uses
PATHOS when he states, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. "
This evidence would appeal to the clergymen by appealing to their sense of
EMOTION because the audience should be worried that this injustice is a big threat
to people. Overall King's argument is SUCCESSFUL in convincing his audience of his
central claim because he has relevant reasons and true information about why he
should be in birmingham.
