Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

An entertaining and exciting match with some nice goals. However one could see that
both teams had already played a tiring tournament and the lunchtime heat in Brazil did not
help either, so there were also made easy mistakes and the players obviously disliked the
extra 30 minutes. Uruguay was the better side in most of the match, so Italy’s win was
lucky.
For the referee it was very challenging, because he had to take many important decisions
during the 120 minutes, which could have decided the outcome.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.)

Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referee’s decision

No handball penalty for Uruguay: The ball hits Chiellini’s arm, which was a bit
40 away from his body, but it came from his foot and Chiellini had no chance to avoid
the contact, so the decision is borderline, but still OK.
Missed second yellow for Maxi Pereira: He clearly hits his opponent in the face
52 with his elbow, this had to be a yellow card. The referee did not even give the
foul. (-0.2)
The respective free kicks, converted to the 1-2 and 2-2 were both correct
72+77
decisions.
No penalty for Uruguay: Correct decision, the defender played mainly the ball,
98
when kicking through the legs of the striker.
No penalty for Uruguay and no second yellow for Suarez: Difficult situation, the
100 defender’s arm was touching Suarez, who then felt easily. It could have been a
penalty as well as a dive call, so play on was probably the best solution here.
Second yellow card for Montolivo: Clearly correct decision, it was an obvious
110
tactical foul.

His card management, especially the too harsh first yellow and the missed

second yellow for Pereira.
2. His general foul detection , although he already improved during the match.
There often were complaints against his decisions, which cannot be totally
3.
avoided, but would be good to be reduced.
The negative side of positive point 4 is that he sometimes exaggerates and runs

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character)

Especially in the extra time, Haimoudi could show, he is able to referee matches
on this level. The generally quite good performance was however was tarnished
by his mistakes in foul detection and card management.
