Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.):

A mere 2692 spectators attended the Round of 16 encounter between Colombia and
Korea Republic held in Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium, Trabzon. The match itself was a
closely fought one between two well-drilled nations.
Korea Republic took the lead in the 14th minute through Song who beat the offside trap
and tucked the ball just past the helpless 'keeper. Colombia equalised in the dying seconds
of the game via a wonderful free-kick from their talisman Quintero, inturn sending the
match into extra-time. The extra thirty minutes was a quite tedious affair in all honesty with
fatigue playing a pivotal role as both nations only mustered a few attempts on goal.
Inevitably, penalties were required to decide the victor. Korea Republic successfully
converted eight spot-kicks compared to the seven converted by their Colombian
counterparts. This meant the Koreans progressed to the next round while Colombia
suffered the heartbreak of elimination.

Referee
Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.)

Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referee’ s decision

Skomina correctly rejects a penalty appeal from the Koreans.
Watching the incident live, it looked a stone-wall penalty as COL #4 barges KOR
37' #2 to the ground. However, after viewing several replays, it was clearly visible
that 1: there wasn't sufficient contact from COL #4 and 2: KOR #2 went down far
to easily. Correct decision.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the
referee’ s tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams
and players, teamwork etc.).
Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences!

Positive Points
Great positioning. Throughout the game, Skomina was always close to the play
which meant if anything significant occurred, he had a perfect position. For
1.
example: in the 37th minute he had an ideal position to correctly deny Korea
Republic a penalty.
Damir Skomina administered three yellow cards (23' 55' & 70') which were all
2. correct. However, their were also instances were he tried to keep his cards in his
pockets, instead opting for verbal warnings.
Foul detection. Skomina could differentiate between what was a foul and what
3. wasn't. He refrained from whistling minor coming togethers and let the game flow
as much as possible, allowing both nations to really express themselves.

Points for Improvement

Sometimes Skomina approaches and communicates to players in a very
1.
unfriendly manner. In a match of this intensity, this wasn't really necessary.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character)

As mentioned above, in some instances Skomina seemed very unfriendly in a
very unchallenging outing.
Apart from that, nothing peculiar to report.
