General:
Fibre to the Home (FTTH) is a unique technology being deployed by BSNL for
the first time in India. The fibre connectivity having unlimited bandwidth and state of
the art technology provides fixed access platform to deliver the high speed
broadband from 256 Kbps to 100 Mbps, IPTV having different type of contents like
HDTV and future coming 3D TV and range of voice telephony services.

It provides a comprehensive solution for the IP leased line, internet, Closed

User Group (CUG), MPLS-VPN, VoIP, video conferencing, video calls etc whatever the
services available on the internet platform, bandwidth on demand can be delivered
by this connectivity to the without changing the access fibre and home device.
Customer will get a CPE called Home Optical Network Termination (HONT) consist of
4X100 Mpbs Ethernet ports and 2 normal telephone ports. Each 100 Mbps ports will
provide broadband, IPTVs, IP Video call and leased line etc as required by the
customers. Customer will get power back unit having full load backup of four hours
and normal backup of three days. This power backup will be AC input and connecting
to the HONT on 12V DC.

Introduction:
FTTH is a relatively new and fast growing method for providing
higher bandwidth broadband telecommunication system based on fiber
optic cables and associated optical electronics for delivery of multiple
advanced services such as telephone, broadband internet and television
to homes and business using GPON technology.

1. Advantages over Copper:

2. High speed up to 2.4Gbps

3. Covers long distance, more than 20 KMs.

4. optical Split Feature minimizes Fiber deployment in local loops.

5. Supports triple play services plus RF overlay

6. Preferred by global big carriers

FTTH is provided through 2 technologies:

GPON – Gigabit Passive Optical Network

GEPON – Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network

A passive optical network (PON) is a point-to-multipoint, fiber to the

premises network architecture in which unpowered optical splitters are
used to enable a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises.

A PON consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) at the service

provider's central office and a number of optical network units (ONU)
/optical line terminals(ONT) near end users.

GPON (Gigabit Optical Passive Optical Network – ITU-T G.984) is a

point-to-multipoint connectivity technology based on Ethernet + ATM and
supporting all FTTx architectures. GPON is now available giving 2.5
Gbps Downstream and 1.25 Gbps Upstream predominantly. 10Gbps
version is also available.

GEPON ( Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network – IEEE 802.3ah)

is a point-to-multipoint connectivity technology based on Ethernet and
supporting all FTTx architectures. EPON is now available as GEPON
version: Symmetrical bi-directional 1 Gbps. & 10 Gbps.

BSNL will extend fibre from its nearest Central Office (CO) location
directly or through franchisee and install HONT and battery backup at
the customers identified locations. The services such as Voice,
Broadband, IPTV etc. will be enabled as per the customer”s request
plans for the same.

FTTH can be used to provide Basic internet Access Service controlled
and uncontrolled from 256Kbps to 1000Mbps which acts as the Highway
for various applications and services as given below:

 TV over IP Service (MPEG2).

 Video on Demand (VoD)(MPEG4) play like VCR
 Audio on Demand Service
 Bandwidth on Demand (User and or service configurable)
 Remote Education
 Point to Point and Point to Multi Point Video Conferencing, virtual
classroom
 Voice and Video Telephony over IP: Connection under control of
centrally located soft switches
 Interactive Gaming
 VPN on broadband
 Dial up VPN Service
 Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)

FTTH User Provisioning flow:
1. Customer approaches CSC and fills the application form.
2. Generation of advice note with initial charge as per tariff through
DOT-Soft.
3. Advice note goes to the Node-In-Charge and the connection is
provisioned in P3 Portal.
4. Necessary configuration in ONT and OLT are completed by Node-
In-Charge with the help of FTTH/ Multiplay/ MPLS NOC Bangalore.
5. Field unit will extend the connection to the customer.
6. Now the customer can access the service.
7. Advice note will be completed in DOT-Soft.

The status of the created User can be checked in Track order under
FTTH-Broadband using portal order ID or Telephone number or
service user ID.

All the modifications (Plan change, Suspension, Reactivation, Static IP

Addition and closure) can be done from Data portal under FTTH-
Broadband modifications.

Services offered by BSNL on FTTH:

1. HSI
2. IPTV
3. VoIP
4. ILL

Service Provisioning:
OLT installation and uplink connectivity will be done locally.
Multiplay team will do necessary configurations in BSNL RPR &BNG
and provide OLT IP and Outer VLAN.

If OLT is connected to GPON RPR or GPON LAN switch, required

configurations will be done by FTTH team-NOC or locally.

The required configurations for service and EMS connectivity in OLT

will be done by Local FTTH team.

Service configuration in ONT is done locally or by FTTH team,NOC.

HSI service configuration:

 Configure HSI VLAN (128 to 449) in Ethernet port of ONT.

 Tag or pass the VIan in Uplink port and PON port of OLT depending on
Vendor.
 All the HSI VLANs should be passed in BNG and RPR.

2.IPTV configuration:
 Configure IPTV multicast VLAN 1805/1806 in BNG.
 Configure multicast and unicast VLANs in RPR.
 Pass both multicast and Unicast VLANs in Uplink and downlink ports of
OLT.
 Configure unicast VLAN in Ethernet port of ONT.
 Required settings in set up box will be done locally by IPTV vendors.

Broadband Networks, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Page 12

network.

 In 1st scenario the standard VLAN 4085 will be passed in RPR Port.
 OLT uplink and Downlink port will be configured with 4085 VLAN.

Broadband Networks, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Page 13

 ONT Ethernet port is to be configured with 4085 and Bandwidth (50mb)
restriction will be done at OLT or ONT level.

MPLS VPN:
 Get the LAN pool and VLAN from Multiplay VPN team.
 Multiplay and MPLS teams will do the necessary configurations in BNG,
RPR and PE router.
 Given VLAN should be passed in Uplink and downlink ports of OLT.
 Configure the VLAN in Ethernet port of ONT.
 Bandwidth restriction will be done in ONT or OLT.
