At first, reading the article seemed to be a tedious task. Being bombarded with a lot
of unfamiliar and scientific words were indeed a handful. I admit that I was blinded by prejudice
that the article would be in simple terms – “boring”. I was wrong. It was much more
What I love about the article is that it made me dive deeper into asking more profound
questions especially in research. As someone with a background in this field, I never really
viewed or defined the social aspect in scientifically trying to figure out the essence of an idea
or belief. I thought that research was just this one dimensional thing that we all say to be true
In the article, I got to read different points of view about how the pursuit of knowledge
is itself an act of social interaction. I do agree that a social aspect is important in research.
Viewing reality in multiple perspectives, in my opinion, could truly further the content of our
reasons as to why we believe a certain thing or think that it is true. I got to relate the positions
of Mill, Peirce and Popper to what happens during the times when I did research. It made me
think about how I view what I think is true and what I think is real.
On the other hand, it also occurred to me how truly important trust and collaboration
is, especially in this field. Trust among the members of the group is integral in doing research.
Every single one of us experiences a different reality which may or may not be similar to what
the other feels. It is also important to try and learn vicariously from each other.
To tie it all up, I guess I could say that while science affects how our society behaves
and thinks, society is also molding the ‘science’ we know and love today. It is with this mutual
relationship that we get to see how our perspective of knowledge evolves and progresses.
We may never truly know what is real and what is not but with our continuous pursuit to
understand it, we may get a glimpse of what lies beyond the reach of our minds.
