¿POR QUÉ SE ESCOGIÓ MANILA?
WHY MANILA?
The events that took place between the Legazpi expedition to the Philippines in 1565, until the
foundation of Manila in 1571, brings forward several questions regarding the objectives for
the colonization of the Philippine archipelago by the Spaniards. However, a close lecture of the
history offers key aspects on the strategic turn from Cebu to Luzon. The Spaniards engaged in
a conflict with the Portuguese and simultaneously learned about new opportunities that arouse
due to the closeness with China.
Mexican diplomat, economist and historian. Cuauhtémoc Villamar has devoted three decades of work
in Asia, particularly promoting economic and cultural cooperation. He is about to conclude his doctoral
dissertation for Sinagpur´s National Univeristy, regarding a Portuguese trade and commerce network
that played a major role in the formation of the economic system known as the Manila Galleon, 1565-
1600. At the present time, he lives in Thailand, married with two children. For the last 10 years he has
been leading a blog about the Philippines and the Galleon “La Nao Va” http://lanaova.blogspot.com/

EL DÍA E
LA FIESTA DE TODOS
LOS QUE HABLAMOS
ESPAÑOL
THE CELEBRATION OF
Over 500 million people speak Spanish. Spanish ranks second language with the majority of
speakers in the world, the second language for worldwide communication, the second most
used language in social networks and the third most used language on the Internet. On June 23,
Instituto Cervantes centres will open their doors to join the Fiesta.
Instituto Cervantes Manila would like invite you to take part in a “Quixotic” endeavor: to
handwrite Cervantes’ novel. We’re looking for book-lover volunteers. Each participant will have
two minutes to copy by hand a few sentences of the novel. The writing-chain will start at 9
am and finish at 4 pm. The final hand-written book will be deposited in our Miguel Hernández
Library.

UNFINISHED
FECHA DATE:
June 26 – September 21, 2018
26 de junio – 21 de septiembre de 2018
LUGAR VENUE:
San Ignacio Church, Intramuros
14
Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2016, the exhibition
Unfinished finds a new host in the historic Walled City of Manila as the San Ignacio
Church becomes the venue where local enthusiasts will be able to view it for three
months from the 21st of June, a project made possible by the Embassy of Spain
in the Philippines, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation
(AECID), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECD), the Instituto
Cervantes de Manila, the Intramuros Administration and the Escuela Taller de
Filipinas Foundation. Showcasing man’s ingenuity in the face of adversity, the
exhibit is a photographic series of possible solutions to problems that have emerged
from the financial crisis affecting Spain since 2008 that has made the practice
of architecture unfeasible and has thus led to the abandonment of construction
projects, consequently resulting into many unfinished buildings. The exhibit seeks
to direct attention to processes more than results in an attempt to discover design
strategies generated by an optimistic view of the constructed environment. These
projects have understood the lessons of the recent past and consider architecture
to be something unfinished, in a constant state of evolution and truly in the service
of humanity. The current moment of uncertainty in the architectural profession
makes its consideration here especially relevant.
