Lesson Plan #7 Title: Compare Decimals

Performance Objective: 7.0 Students will be able to compare decimals to recognize which

would be greater or lesser than one another with 80% accuracy in 5 attempts.

Resources or Materials Needed: McGraw-Hill My Math Grade 5 Volume 1

Time: 80 Minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: I will begin the lesson by putting two values of decimals

on the board that look very similar and tell them that these are both used to represent an amount

of Skittles (in pounds) that they are given. I would ask the students if they are the same amount. I

would then ask them which one they would want if they were not the same. I will show them

how we could put the decimals on a number line to compare them. I will tell them that they do

not have to create a number line every time; just that I am using a number line for the sake of

understanding.

Step 2: Content Presentation: I will review how digits have different values and then show the

students the process that should be done in order to make comparing decimals easier.

Step 3: Learner Participation: We will work together on a few decimal comparisons, but the

students will eventually get to the point where they are working on their own and comparing

their own decimals. We will go over the answers together and I will answer any questions or

concerns that the students may have.

Step 4: Assessment: Students will answer 5 questions where they have to compare decimals (to

the thousandths place) to recognize which would be greater or lesser than one another.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Students can come up with a list of decimals and give them

to another student for them to recognize which would be greater than the other or recognize if

they are equal.

Lesson Plan Summary: I am going to show the students how to compare decimals and then

have them work on comparing decimals on their own, which would make this a cognitivist

lesson.
