Reflection

This artifact was created for the Final Synthesis Portfolio. It is an audio clip
of a high school student recounting the mistreatment of a student who has
autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This episode has relevance to PBIS. A
core principle of Tier 1 support is to effectively teach appropriate behavior
to all children. Obviously the student who criticized the student with ASD
did not display appropriate behavior or common decency. This misbehavior
would not be acceptable for a general education student and is an
egregious way to treat a special education student.

Tier 1 support should prevent the development of new incidents. School-

wide positive expectations and behaviors should be defined and taught.
High quality behavioral expectations should be employed and disrespect of
another student should be a target for change. If school-wide supports do
not achieve the behavioral goal, more intensive and targeted Tier 2
supports must be considered.

The misbehavior recalled above can be prevented in the future probably

with Tier 1 supports alone. Part of the process and solution must include
the development of empathy. This will benefit all students.
