Multicultural theme: Self-Esteem and Cultural Dialogue with others of different culture.

Materials: The Name Jar by Xangsook Choi, cultural jar with lid, papers cut into small pieces, pencils,
crayons, and colored markers.

Standard(s): Nevada Academic Reading Standards for Literature K-5 (Key Ideas and Details):

• Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text.
• Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central
message, lesson, or moral.
• Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

Objective(s):

Part 1: Students will recall the pronunciation of the main character’s name as a group with 100 %
accuracy.

Part 2: Individually, students will interpret the taste of American pickle and kimchi, and compare the
different tastes using a venn diagram.

Procedure:

1. Introduce: Teacher presents the book “The Name Jar” by asking all students to write their
names on a notecard and put them in a jar.
2. Read: Teacher reads the book aloud to entire class.
3. Discuss:
In a group, the classroom talks about the following questions:
a. Question 1: Why was Yoonhai’s name hard to pronounce?
b. Question 2: Why did Yoonhai wanted to change her name?
c. Question 3: What made her keep her Korean name?
d. Question 4: Why did Yoonhai’s grandma gave her name?
e. Question 5: Do you know anyone who was like Yoonhai?
4. Activities:
a. Activity 1: Individually, students will try American pickles and kimchi, and compare the
flavors by using a venn diagram.
b. Activity 2: As a class, students take turns to choose if they want to pull a name out of
the jar.

Evaluation: Teacher reviews student discussion and venn diagrams to show at least 1 difference and 1
similarity.
