The package consists of a textbook and an activity book. The textbook and activity book are each divided into 26 units which are written in a modular form in accordance with the modular structure of the KSSR. The 26 units are presented under three broad themes namely; World of Self, World of Stories and World of Knowledge to make it interesting for pupils. The textbook incorporates elements of the underlying pedagogical principles of the curriculum namely; back to basics, learning is fun, meaningful and purposeful, teaching is learer-centered, integration of salient new technologies, assessment for learning and character building In tandem with the current developments in education, the textbook also infuses the Educational Emphases of Thinking Skills, Information and Communication Technology Skills (ICT), Values and Citizenship, Multiple Intelligences, Knowledge Acquisition, Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Assessment. It is also designed in such a way to incorporate the four learning skills, namely; Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing. In addition, a new skill called Language Aris is integrated to make learning English fun and to stimulate language and arts appreciation among pupils. Each unit of the textbook is spread out over four pages and begins with a stimulus page. Teachers are encouraged to talk and elicit oral responses from the pupils based on graphics found on the stimulus page, giving emphasis to listening and speaking skills. The rest of the Pages are devoted to acquiring the reading as well as the language arts skills. The early reading skills are presented using the strategies of phonics. Pupils are guided and led to the understanding that there is a relationship between phonemes and graphemes. Pupils will be able to acquire the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. Furthermore, teachers are encouraged to fully utilise these activities by giving more ‘examples according to the ability of the pupils. The activity book relates to each unit in the textbook. Thus, it complements and supplements the activities found in the textbook. Teachers are advised to fully utilise each activity in the textbook before moving on to the activity book. Although the core learning skill used in the activity book is the writing skill, the other learning skills of listening and speaking, reading and language arts are also inserted throughout. To make learning enjoyable, fun and challenging, puzzles, word maze and cut-and-paste activities are used. The learning skills involved are stated at the bottom left or right hand corner of each page in the textbook and at the bottom of left or right hand corner of each page in the activity book. Teacher's notes, if any, are also included at the bottom of each page. The Teacher's Notes give suggestions and ideas on how to vary the activities. However, teachers may come up with their own ideas or variations of the activity given. Indicators for page references in the textbook as well as activity book are also inserted at the bottom of the pages accordingly.
