Receiving a diagnosis of diabetes can be complex, this can also apply to patients previously

diagnosed. Researchers conducted a study, one of the researchers was associated with St. Cloud

VA Health Care System in Minnesota. The patients studied received care and education at the

VA Medical Center in the Midwest region. The study consisted of new diagnosed Diabetes

Mellitus (DM) patients that have not had diabetic education in relation to patients with a new

diagnosis with basic education related to the disease process. Assessments were done including

hemoglobin A1c’s, which covered the same time span. The study revealed patients receiving

education had lower hemoglobin A1c levels versus no change in hemoglobin A1c levels of the

patients not receiving education. However, this study could be perceived as being bias due to the

location of the study and the affiliation of the researcher.
