CVNG 2009 Soil Mechanics II

Lectures 1-6
Dr. Derek Gay

In Soil Mechanics I the concept of stresses in soils was introduced principally as 1D gravitational
stresses; a total stress σ due to the self weight of an earth mass, these typically increased linearly
with depth within a soil profile. Water pressures in soil were also introduced for both saturated and
unsaturated soil states.

The elastic stress distributions are the same as you met in Soil Mechanics, but this set is probably
more comprehensive and includes the vertical, horizontal, shear and principal stress states. These
can be used to determine lateral load distributions on walls, piles and braced excavations.

The calculation of elastic settlements for foundations applies the elastic deformation theory, but
attempt to include the effects of foundation roughness and flexibility, resulting in semi-empirical
methodologies.
