Khat(pronounced cot) has a negative viewpoint in

depending on the areas .Khat contains two main


ingredients, cathinone and cathine. Slang terms for khat
include qat, kat, chat, miraa, quaadka, abyssinian tea,
african salad, bushman’s tea, somali tea, tohai, and
tschat. Khat is a stimulant. It looks like a normal plant
made up of many leaves. This drug is used by chewing on
the leaves(a lot like chewing tobacco). Khat has been
around since the 15th century, originating from Ethiopia.
The drug khat comes from a plant also called khat, but its
scientific term is catha edulis. Khat is highly addictive,
creating a feeling of euphoria. The short term effects of
khat: irritability, insomnia, euphoria, physical exhaustion,
breathing difficulties, constipation, tachycardia,
hallucinations, manic behavior,and, hyperactivity. Long
term effects include anorexia, gastric disorders,
depression, high risk for heart disease and cancer of the
mouth, liver damage, and cardiac complications. Khat
affects the brain by decreasing the attention span and a
high amount of dopamine is produced, which causes
highaccumulation of dopamine in the brain which can lead
to hallucinations, schizophrenia, and high blood pressure.
Khat is legal in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Yemen, but
banned in the United States.
