develop skills within the
area of implantology and
periodontology. All these
activities are pro-bono
from my side, because I
know from my own
personal experience how it
is to be young and willing
to learn, but with limited
finance resources and/or
guidance.
I asked my colleague dr.
Gabriel Cojocariu, one of
my young mentee, to share
his thoughts about his
mentored experience: “I am

Președinte al asociației de implantologie din sudul
europei, nordul africii și orientul mijlociu și profesor
universitar, dr. Alain simonpieri este unul dintre cei mai
apreciați chirurgi oro-maxilo-faciali din monte carlo și
din franța. Medicul își atribuie succesul muncii susținute
și unui stil de viață strict.

ți studiat atât în Europa, cât și în America.
Cum ați descrie cele două experiențe academice?
Sunt două culturi diferite și două sisteme educaționale
complet diferite. În Franța și în Europa, în general, doctorii sunt
mai tehnici decât în SUA. În Statele Unite se țin mai multe pre-
legeri, se face mai multă cercetare și se vorbește mult. În Europa
se practică mult. Sincer, eu cred că educația noastră stomatologi-
că este mai bună decât cea din Statele Unite.
Ați fondat Institutul de Implantologie Estetică din Marsilia.
Ce v-ați propus să realizați prin intermediul lui?
Când am debutat în implantologie, acum 47 de ani, am lucrat ală-
turi de un nume mare în domeniu, Jacques Bori. Jacques mi-a spus
că e imposibil să realizezi implanturi estetice. Eu i-am spus ”Îți pro-
mit că o să ajung să obțin rezultate estetice fantastice!”. Și am lucrat
să realizez asta în fiecare zi și în fiecare an. Și, în cele din urmă, as-
tăzi toată lumea urmează această cale estetică. Și cred că e cu adevă-
rat important pentru pacienții noștri, pentru că la început protezele
erau foarte inestetice. Și era absolut necesar să se facă ceva pentru a
îmbunătăți rezultatele. Aceasta este calea mea, scopul meu: încerc
să-mi îmbunătățesc zilnic rezultatele estetice în implantologie.
Conduceți, de asemenea, două clinic, scrieți numeroase arti-

ou’ve studied both in Europe and in the USA. How
would you describe these two academic experiences?
They are two different cultures and also, completely dif-
ferent educations. In France and in Europe, in general, there is
more technique than in the United States. In the United States
there are more lectures, they do more research and they speak a
lot. In Europe, there is lot of practice. So I honestly think that
our dental education is better than the one in the United States.
You’ve founded the Aesthetic Implantology Institute in
Marseille. What did you hope to achieve through this institute?
When I began working, 47 years ago, I started with a big name of
implantology, doctor Jacques Bori. Jacques told me that it’s impos-
sible to accomplish esthetic dentistry on implants. And I told him
“I promise you, I will arrive to obtain fantastic esthetic results!”.
And I worked to achieve this every day and every year. And finally,
today, everybody in the world follows this way of esthetic. And I
think it’s really important for our patients, because at the beginning
the prosthesis was really unaesthetic. And it was absolutely neces-
sary to do something to improve the results. This is my way, my
goal: I try to improve my esthetic results in implantology every day.
You also run two private practices, write numerous articles
and travel the world to lecture. How do you keep track of your
multiple priorities and still focus on quality?
I have the big chance to work with Joseph Choukroun. And Joseph
is a guy that calls me at 11 PM or at 6 in the morning and says “I
have an idea about this! What do you think about that? You need to
try this protocol!” We are always working to improve our protocol.
And at my center for continuing dental education I always speak
about the esthetic way. Go slowly and try to obtain beautiful esthetic

Orientul Mijlociu și am șansa de a lucra în două clinici fantastice în
Monte Carlo și în Marsilia. Sunt fericit și mândru de aceste realizări,
dar poți deveni mereu mai bun. Nu voi fi niciodată mândru de cariera

mult, trebuie să fii serios și trebuie să faci sport pentru a fi sănă-

with me everyday. It’s difficult for me, because he doesn’t have any ex-
perience and he needs to go slowly, step by step. Surgery is really seri-
ous work. And you need to go slowly and have a little bit of experience.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
My career has been fantastic. I’m a professor in Naples, I am the
president of SENAME International and I have the chance to
work in two fantastic clinics in Monte Carlo and Marseille. I’m
happy and proud about all of these achievements, but you can
always improve. I will never be proud of my career. You can im-
prove what you do every time, because you can’t stay at the same
level. You need to go up, but it’s not easy to go up. And now I’m
beginning to get old.
What do you consider to be your defining trait of character
and how has it helped you in your career?
I think I had 4 careers in 1, because I worked a lot. You need to
work a lot, you need to read a lot, you need to be serious, you
need to do sports to be healthy. When you are doing surgery, for
example, for 5 hours, you need to be in good shape. Because if
you drink the night before, it’s impossible to do surgery in the
morning. It’s necessary to have a strict life, just like athletes. We,
dentists, are high-level athletes. We work 10-12 hours everyday
and it’s a very difficult work. Because if you succeed in 1000 cas-

What excites you most about your job after almost 40 years of
practicing it?
The challenge, only the challenge. Because you need to succeed
every day, you need to improve the result every time. You can’t

about tomorrow? Everyday is another challenge. The level will be
really high for my son. That’s the reason why I think it’s necessary
to go step by step and have good technique and a good protocol.

um ați descoperit pasiunea pentru stomatologie?
În primul rând, tatăl meu a fost stomatolog, un proteti-
cian de exceptie, care prin exemplul lui m-a îndrumat
către această meserie. Întotdeauna mi-au plăcut biologia și știin-
țele naturale și din acest motiv m-am gândit să fac ori medicină
generală, ori stomatologie. Până la urmă am decis să fac stoma-
tologie. Iar parodontologia are o parte foarte apropiată de biolo-
gie, chiar cea mai apropiată din domeniul stomatologiei, și din
acest motiv m-am gândit că este o combinație foarte bună.
Ați profesat în multe țări europene. De ce ați ales să vă
stabiliți în Elveția?
Pentru că aceasta era cea mai reputată catedră din domeniul pa-
rodontologiei, poate chiar la nivel mondial, și am avut șansa de a
fi ales pentru această poziție.
Care este realizarea profesională de care sunteți cel mai
mândru?
Probabil momentul în care am primit catedra din Berna.
Apropo de catedra din Berna, de ce ați ales cariera academică?

ow did you discover your passion for dentistry?
First of all, my father was a dentist, an exceptional
prosthetist, who, through his own example, guided me
towards this profession. I have always loved biology and natural
sciences and because of this I thought to either study general
medicine or dentistry. In the end I decided to go for dentistry.
Periodontology is very close to biology and that is why I
thought it is a very good combination.
You have practiced in many European countries. Why did you
choose to settle down in Switzerland?
Because this was the most reputed chair in the field of perio-
dontology, possibly even worldwide, and I had the opportunity
to be chosen for this position.
What professional accomplishment are you the most proud of?
Probably the moment when I received the chair in Bern.
Talking about this, why did you choose the academic career?
I have always liked my life to be as varied as possible. To deal with
intellectual issues, not only with those in my practice. I also like to
teach, to have younger colleagues to whom I can pass down what
I have learned, all the results I have obtained from research. I like
this variety, from treating patients to education and research.
How do you think your students would describe you?
I think I am close to my students. I am rather strict and de-
manding, but fair.
What advice would you give to a young person who wants to
follow in your footsteps?

din Timișoara. Ce v-a determinat să vă investiți timpul în
pregătirea viitorilor stomatologi?
Cred că dragostea de a-i învăța pe alții mi-a fost insuflată de
profesorul meu, Dorin Bratu, care m-a luat sub aripa lui din
anul 3, până când a plecat din facultate. După care m-am re-
tras și eu.
De ce ați plecat din învățământ?
Din cauza timpului. Cred că am stat prea mult, pentru că
timpul și energia sunt limitate. Îmi place să cred că sunt, to-
tuși, un clinician și trebuie să lucrez mult. Plus că, la un mo-
ment dat, intervine și familia. Și tot 24 de ore avem la dispo-
ziție. Al doilea motiv ar fi calitatea proastă a învățământului
superior din România, care nu este bazat pe valori și nu se
ghidează după niște criterii foarte sănătoase. Chiar dacă se
încearcă o schimbare, din păcate sunt prea puțini ca să
schimbe un sistem atât de ancrasat. Știu că nu e bine să spui
chestia asta, însă cred că am ajuns la o maturitate la care pot
să recunosc lucrul ăsta, dezinteresat.

id you wish to become a doctor ever since you were
little or was it a revelation that came to you later?
I don’t think I’ve wanted this since I was little, al-
though my mother was a dentist. But I think that around the
ninth grade I knew I was going to medical school. I didn’t
want to go to dentistry - I thought dentists are not doctors
and I wanted to be a maxillofacial surgeon. But after I spend
almost 3 years in the hospital during college, I realised that
it’s not what I wanted. I wouldn’t have wanted to see a pa-
tient dying and then I told myself that the risk of this hap-
pening is lower as a dentist.
You have worked as a teaching assistant at the ”Victor Babeș”
University, in Timișoara. What made you invest your time in
preparing the future dentists?
I think the love for teaching others was inspired by my profes-
sor, Dorin Bratu, who took me under his wing from my third
year, until he left the university. Afterwards I also left.
Why did you leave the education system?
It was taking up too much of my time. I think I stayed for
too long, because time and energy are limited. I like to con-
sider myself a clinician and I have to work a lot. And there
was also my family. And I still had 24 hours. The second rea-
son would be the poor quality of the higher education system
in Romania, which is not based on values and which is not
guided by some very healthy principles. Even if some people
are trying to change it, unfortunately they are too few to
change such a clogged system. I know that it’s not okay to
say this out loud, but I think I’ve reached an age when I can
admit it disinterestedly.

vremea respectivă. Așa că am devenit implicată în tratamente cu
factori de creștere, laser, implanturi și parodontologie. În 2007 am
mers la Los Angeles, în Statele Unite, și am făcut un training în
estetică. La întoarcerea în Grecia mi-a fost greu să practic estetica,

but she’s determined to leave her mark on it.
hat attracted you to dentistry?
I wanted to be a doctor ever since I was a little girl.
When I finished high school, I went to the United
States and I did a pre-medical program so when I came back to
Greece I had the opportunity to either be a doctor or a dentist. I ap-
plied to both medical and dental school and I was accepted to both.
At the time I was 22 years old and I thought ”I’m too old to be-
come a doctor, it might be better to become a dentist because it’s
a more family-friendly career”. So I went to dental school and
then I did a master in biology and another master in periodontol-
ogy. Then I had my own clinic, I started a family and I became
very interested in lasers - I was among the first doctors in Greece
to do any laser therapy. And then I met doctor Martelli, who was
using PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) at that time. So I got involved
with the growth factors, I came back to Greece and I was doing
laser growth factors and implants and perio. Back in 2007 I went
to the States, to Los Angeles, and I was trained there in aesthet-
ics. Coming back to Greece, it was very difficult for me to do aes-
thetics because they were thinking that I wasn’t allowed by the
Greek legislation, that we had the dermatologists and the plastics
surgeons for that. So I just left it there.
But in 2012, having the protocols, I started to use the growth fac-
tors in aesthetics. I believe that dentistry is not only the soft and
the hard tissue, it’s the face, the lips, it’s everything. So I love peri-
odontology, because I love to fix the soft tissue and I love to save
teeth, but I strongly believe that whatever you’re doing inside the
mouth doesn’t really show unless you’re also doing something
outside. Because people care how you look like on the outside,
they don’t care what’s happening with your third molar.

Putem face tratamente estetice faciale cu Botox, cu fillere sau cu
multe alte produse care pot cauza complicații uneori. Dar sân-
gele este total autolog, așa că îl extragem de la pacient și îl pre-
lucrăm prin centrifugare, folosing protocolul lui Joseph
Choukroun. Iar produsul obținut îl putem injecta sau aplica pe
față. Eu practicam estetica, dar Joseph mi-a dat lichidul PRF și
am fost prima care am făcut tratamente estetice combinând
aceste două forme ale PRF-ului lichid. Pot întineri pielea și îi
pot îmbunătăți calitatea sau pot adăuga volum țesutului care l-a
pierdut, pentru că stimulez producția de colagen pot sa adaug vo-
lum la nivelul fetei, de exemplu la nivelul pliurilor nasolabiale,
obraji, buzet etc.. E un procedeu total autolog, nu are nimic artifi-
cial și îți poți reface propriul țesut pas cu pas.
Acum vă concentrați mai mult pe latura estetică în carieră?
Da. Nu pot spune că iubesc estetica facială mai mult decât parodon-
tologia. Le iubesc pe amândouă. Dar sunt una dintre cele 2 milioane
de parodontologi din lume. În schimb sunt unica din lume care apli-
că această tehnică. Vreau să investesc în acest lucru pentru că îl iubesc
și vreau să împărtășesc ceea ce știu cu toată lumea. Singura modalita-
te prin care pot face asta este să învăț alți medici să facă acest proto-
col și simt că am o misiune. Nu fac ceea ce fac pentru bani. Câștig
bani din stomatologie și din estetică facială, dar o fac din dragoste.
Când mor, vreau ca oamenii să vorbească despre munca mea, nu des-
pre banii pe care i-am lăsat. Vreau să las în urma mea cunoștințele și
experiența mea, ca cineva să poată să le ia, să le multiplice și să le facă
de 1000 de ori mai bune. Vreau să las în urma mea o carte, munca
mea, un nume etic. Ne naștem și murim, dar putem lăsa în urma cu-
noștințele noastre pentru întreaga umanitate.

I had the support of my fami-
ly. My mother and my father
took care of my children and
this was great because I had
the opportunity to study and
work. But it wasn’t very easy. I
only spent a few hours a day
with my kids, but I tried very
hard to make those hours pro-
ductive. We were doing things
together and we still do: we
travel together, we go shop-
ping or we go out to dinner.
We have our disagreements, but we have a very good and close
relationship.
You call yourself “The first doctor worldwide doing facial aes-
thetics with blood derivatives i-PRF & A-PRF liquid using
Joseph Choukroun’s PRF”. Please tell us a little bit about that.
We can do facial aesthetics with Botox, fillers and many other
products and sometimes these might cause complications. But
blood is something totally autologous, so you take it, you put it in
a machine and by using Joseph Choukroun’s protocol, you can
make it in a liquid form and you can inject it or apply it on the
face. I was doing aesthetics, but he gave me the PRF liquid and I
was the first one doing aesthetics combining these two forms of
liquid PRF. And I can rejuvenate the skin and improve its quality
or I can add volume to the lost tissue, because I stimulate the col-
lagen production, add volume at the face for example nasolabial
folds, cheeks, lips etc.. This is totally autologous, it has nothing ar-
tificial, you can build up your own tissue step by step.
Is aesthetics your career focus now?
Yes. I cannot say I love facial aesthetics more than periodontolo-
gy, I love them both. But I am one of 2 million periodontology’s
in the world. By doing this technique, I am the only one. I want
to invest in this thing because I love it and I want to spread the
knowledge worldwide. The only way to achieve this is to teach
other doctors to do this protocol. And I feel I have a mission. I
don’t do what I do for money. I make money from dentistry and
from facial aesthetics, but I do it out of love. When I die, I want
people to talk about my work, not about the money I have left. I
want to leave behind my knowledge and experience, so that
somebody can take it and multiply it and make it 1000 times bet-
ter. I want to leave behind a book, my work, an ethical name. We
come and we leave, but we can leave the knowledge behind us for
humanity.

Când am devenit directorul Programului de
Parodontologie Avansată din cadrul Universității din
California de Sud. Cred că am fost cel mai tânăr director de pro-
gram din America. Abia absolvisem și colaboram cu Jørgen Slots,
un om de știință spectaculos. Mi-a oferit job-ul și am fost foarte
încântat să-l accept.
Ați realizat 3 filme cu temă dentară. Cum v-a venit ideea de a
combina știința cu arta?
1,5 miliarde de oameni din lume câștigă mai puțin de un dolar
pe zi. Așa că poți să le dai o periuță de dinți, dar n-o s-o folo-
sescă mai mult de o lună, pentru că nu-și permit să cumpere
pastă de dinți. Și un alt miliard câștigă mai puțin de 5 dolari
pe zi. Iar ăsta e un joc vechi. Mergem în acel sat și în acea țară
și o să dea bine, facem niște poze, toată lumea o să se simtă
mândră. Realitatea e că nu funcționează. Așa că am venit cu
ideea că am putea folosi sare de la Marea Moartă să eliminăm
patogenitatea. Nu patogenii, ci patogenitatea. Am făcut niște
teste în vitro, în laborator și apoi pe pacienți și mi-am dat sea-
ma că funcționează. Așa că mi-am făcut o echipă și am realizat
un film. Primul s-a numit ”Dușmanul Zâmbetului”. Și dacă
oamenii care nu au suficienți bani văd filmul ăsta, vor fi în stare
să prevină un număr semnificativ de probleme parodontale,
dentare și ale gingiilor. Apoi am publicat un articol cu Jean-
François Michel despre copiii din Manila, Filipine. Timp de
10 ani am urmărit orfani cu vârste între 5 și 12 ani, care fuse-
seră abuzați fizic. Am vrut să vedem dacă putem să-i împuter-
nicim. Și după ce i-am urmărit timp de 10 ani, am realizat că
au semnificativ mai puține probleme parodontale. Al doilea
film s-a numit ”Ce a ucis zâmbetul lui Hatșepsut?”. Am avut 7

hat was your first big break in dentistry?
When I became the director of the Advanced
Periodontics Program at the University of Southern
California. I think I was the youngest Program Director in
America. I had just graduated and I was collaborating with Jørgen
Slots, a spectacular scientist. He offered me that job and I was
very pleased to accept it.
You’ve produced three movies with a dental theme. How did
you come up with the idea of combining science and art to
send your message across?
1,5 billion people on Earth are making less than a dollar per day.
So even if you give them a toothbrush, they can never use it more
than a month, because they don’t have enough money to buy
toothpaste. And then another billion people are making less than
5 dollars a day. And this is an old game. We go to this village and
to that country and it’s going to look good, we can take some pic-
tures, everybody’s going to be proud. The reality is that it doesn’t
work. So I came with this idea that maybe we can use Dead Sea
salt to eliminate pathogenicity. Not pathogens, but pathogenicity.
I did some testing in vitro, in the lab, and then on patients and I
realised that it’s working. So I put a team together and made a
film. The first one was entitled “The Enemy of the Smile”. And if
people who don’t have enough money watch that movie, they’re
going to be capable to prevent a significant number of periodon-
tal, gums and dental problems. And then we published an article
with Jean-François Michel about kids in Manila, in the
Philippines. For about 10 years we followed orphans between ag-
es 5 to 12, who were physically abused. We wanted to see whether
we can empower them. After following them for 10 years, we re-
alised that they had significantly fewer periodontal problems. The

internațional. Aceeași pasiune încearcă să o transmită
studenților academiei sale private din Africa de Sud.
Pentru că doctorul Gluckman crede cu tărie că atunci
când dezvolți specialiști, ajuți întreaga societate.

unteți fondatorul și directorul Academiei de
Implantologie și Estetică, o instituție de învățământ
privat din Africa de Sud, care oferă cursuri postuniver-
sitare de implantologie. De ce ați creat această Academie?
Sunt mai multe motive. În primul rând, universitățile sud-africane
nu pot preda studenților stomatologie avansată. La capitolul ăsta
exista o lacună. De asemenea, mulți dentiști generaliști puteau fa-
ce implantologie. Și oamenii ăștia veneau din universități unde nu
aveau parte de formare și, cu toate astea, aveau voie să practice.
Filosofia mea este că trebuie să pregătești oamenii să facă lucrurile
corect, pentru că singurii care suferă sunt pacienții. Academia mea
are 14 sau 15 ani vechime, dar am început să predau implantolo-
gie dentiștilor generaliști acum 20 de ani. Și timp de 10 sau 15 ani
am dus o lungă bătălie cu societățile de specialiști. Voiau să ne în-
chidă Academia, din cauză că nu credeau că ar trebui să facem as-
ta. Evident, acum lucrurile s-au schimbat și toți specialiștii vor să
formeze stomatologi generaliști, pentru că văd că există un avantaj
financiar. Și acesta este un lucru bun, pentru că aduce mai multă
vizibilitate domeniului implantologiei. Când ești singurul expert,
devii chiorul care e împărat în țara orbilor. Dar dacă ai mai mulți
experți, ridici nivelul întregii societăți. Și cred că asta e important:
să ajuți societatea. Pentru că dacă ridicăm nivelul tuturor, toată lu-
mea are de câștigat.

Passion for implantology has turned dr. Howard
Gluckman into an internationally renowned
specialist. He’s trying to transmit this passion to the
students at his private academy in South Africa.
Because dr. Gluckman is a firm believer in the fact
that by lifting specialists, you can lift the entire society.
ou’re the founder and director of The Implant &
Aesthetic Academy, a private training facility in South
Africa that provides a complete postgraduate program
in implantology. Why did you create this Academy?
There’s a couple of reasons. First, universities in South Africa
are not able to teach the students advanced dentistry. So there
was really a gap. Also, a lot of general practitioners are able to
do implantology. And these guys were coming out of universi-
ty and had no formal training and yet they were allowed to
practice. My philosophy is that you need to train people to do
things properly because the only people that suffer are the pa-
tients. My Academy is 14 or 15 years old, but I started training
general practitioners maybe 20 years ago. And we fought a
long battle with the specialists’ societies, for 10 or 15 years,
where they wanted to shut us down, because they felt we
should not be training general practitioners. Obviously now
things have changed and the specialists are all opening their
own facilities to train general dentists, because they see there’s
a financial boost, and that’s also fine. Because it creates an
awareness and it pushed more people into that realm. Being an
expert, you become the one eyed-man in the land of the blind.
Whereas if you have multiple experts, you lift the whole socie-
ty. And I think that’s the important thing: to lift society.
Because if we lift everybody, then everybody succeeds.

Dețineți o clinică în Cape Town. Care sunt principalele
satisfacții pe care vi le aduce această postură?
Cred că faptul că pot închide și deschide când vreau eu. Nu
răspund în fața nimănui, răspund doar în fața mea. Nu cred
că am tipul de personalitate care să răspundă în fața cuiva.
Nu-mi plac regulile, așa că nu-mi prea place să le urmez.
Dar frustrări care vin odată cu propria afacere, aveți?
Sunt foarte, foarte norocos deoarece am propriul meu cabi-
net din 1998 și asistenta mea îmi este alături de 22 de ani,
managerul meu de 15 ani și practic tot personalul pe care îl
avem ne-a fost alături de mai bine de 10 ani. Asta este cheia
- să-ți menții personalul fericit. Nu am frustrări. Sigur, aș
putea câștiga mai mulți bani, dar banii nu sunt scopul meu.
Pasiunea și dragostea pentru ceea ce fac sunt scopurile mele.
Cum v-ați loializat echipa?
Tatăl meu m-a învățat o zicală foarte bună când eram mic:
”Să nu uiți niciodată pe cine întâlnești în timp ce urci, pen-
tru că nu știi niciodată de cine ai nevoie în timp ce cobori”.
Fie te comporți cu oamenii care sunt sub nivelul tău ca și
cum sunt sub nivelul tău, fie tratezi pe toată lumea așa cum
vrei să fii tu tratat. Scopul meu este să devin un om cât mai
bun. Asta e ceea ce vreau să realizez în viață.
Ce abilități sau calități au contribuit cel mai mult la suc-
cesul dumneavoastră?
Pasiunea. Dacă nu ai pasiune, nu ai nimic. Cel puțin nu în
domeniul ăsta. Și eu sunt norocos, pentru că am devenit
stomatolog dintr-o întâmplare.
La ce vă referiți când spuneți ”dintr-o întâmplare”?
Când eram la școală, voiam să devin veterinar, pentru că iu-
besc animalele. Dar pe vremea aceea, ca să fii admis la fa-
cultatea veterinară în Africa de Sud trebuia să vorbești unul

Care este cea mai mare teamă a dumneavoastră?
Să-mi moară copiii. M-ar ucide ca fiii mei să se îmbolnă-
vească, să moară sau, mai rău, să fie răpiți și să nu-i mai văd
niciodată, să nu aflu niciodată unde sunt. Dacă ar muri
amândoi, m-aș sinucide. Viața n-ar mai avea sens pentru
mine. Soția mea a murit acum mulți ani de cancer, așa că

You’re also running your own private practice in Cape
Town. What are the main rewards of your position?
Closing and opening when you want to, that’s the best. I
don’t answer to anyone, I answer to myself. And I suppose
my personality is not one that answers to anyone. I don’t
like rules, so I don’t really like to follow rules.
What about the main frustrations of running a private
practice?
I have to say I’m very, very lucky in that I’ve been in my own
private practice since 1998 and my nurse has been with me
22 years, the practice manager has been with me 15 years,
and virtually all the staff that we have have been there 10+
years. That’s key - keeping your staff happy. I don’t have frus-
trations. I mean, I could make more money, but money is not
my goal. Passion and love for I do is my goal.
How did you manage to loyalize your staff ?
My father taught me a very good saying when I was very
young: “Never forget who you meet on your way up because
you never know who you might need on the way down.”
You either treat people who are below your station like
they’re below your station or your treat everybody the way
you’d like to be treated. My ultimate goal is the be the best
human being I can. That’s what I want to achieve.
What abilities or personal qualities do you believe con-
tribute most to your success?
Passion. If you don’t have passion, you have nothing. Not in
this business. And I’m just lucky, because I entered into
dentistry purely by mistake.
What do you mean?
At school I wanted to be a vet, because I love animals. But
in those days, to enter veterinary school in South Africa
you had to speak one of the Afrikaans languages, and I
could only speak English. So my friend told me “I’m gonna
to do dentistry”. I thought “Hmm, that sounds good, I’ll do
that, as well.” (laughs) That’s how I got into dentistry. But
listen, I do like working with my hand and I do like work-
ing with people. So it wasn’t as stupid as that. It was a great
choice and I have to say I wouldn’t go back to veterinary
science, I love what I do.
What is your greatest fear?
My children dying. If I die, I die. My children getting sick,
dying or worse, my children getting kidnapped and never
seeing them again and just having that fear of never know-
ing where they are - that would kill me. If they both died,

țin bisturiul în mână. Și când n-o să mai pot face asta, pen-
tru că mâinile îmi vor tremura prea tare, cât timp voi putea
preda, o să predau.
Ce anume vă place atât de mult la predat?
Iubesc să-mi împărtășesc cunoștințele. Este incredibil să
vezi pe cineva crescând. E la fel în cazul persoanelor care
cultivă flori și își văd floarea înflorind. Să vezi o persoană
care aplică o tehnică pe care tu ai dezvoltat-o și pe care o
face la fel de bine ca tine sau, și mai bine, o îmbunătățește -
uau! E ca și cum ai vedea

Dacă ați putea da timpul înapoi, ați alege același traseu
profesional?
Cred că da. Știind ceea ce știu acum, aș alege probabil să fac
altceva, doar pentru că mi-ar plăcea să învăț ceva nou. Ador
să învăț și nu m-aș putea opri niciodată. Am multe hobby-
uri pe care le iubesc: fac fotografii, construiesc mobilă. Mi-
ar plăcea să urmez unul dintre aceste hobby-uri, să le per-
fecționez și să devin, de exemplu, un fotograf profesionist.
Uau, mi-ar plăcea la nebunie!

I’d commit suicide. There’s no point in living for me. My
wife died many years ago from cancer, so I’m a single par-
ent. And I’m very lucky - I have two beautiful boys who are
incredible human beings: they’re generous, they’re kind,
they’ve got the qualities that I really respect and admire.
Do they work in your field?
No. My older son is studying psychology, want to be a psy-
chologist and my younger one wants to make a lot of mon-
ey and be rich. (laughs) I’m hoping that one of them makes
money and then I can retire. (laughs)
I’m sure you could retire now, if you wanted to.
I’m never retiring, I don’t want to. My brain would die. I
love working every day, I love operating, I love picking up a
scalpel, and when I won’t be able to do that, because I’m
shaking too much, as long as I can teach, I’m gonna teach.
What about teaching gets you so passionate?
I love sharing my knowledge. It’s an amazing thing to watch
somebody else grow. It’s the same thing as a person who grows
flowers and you see your flower bloom. You see this person do-
ing this technique that you’ve developed and they’re doing it as
well as you or even better and
they’re improving it - wow!
That’s watching the ultimate
flower bloom. I have passion
for surgery. I love picking up a
scalpel, I can’t wait to do my
next operation, I love it. The
more difficult and the more
challenging it is, the more fun
we have doing it. I say “fun”,
but you get stressed and you
sweat, but when you put the
last stitch and you close it up, it’s like wow! But teaching is
something else, it’s a special thing. And when you see people
feeding from the energy they take from you, it really energizes
you. And that energy is incredible. I think it’s like adrenaline.
If you could do things all over again, would you choose
the same path for yourself ?
I think I would. But I have a lot of hobbies, I do photogra-
phy, I make furniture, I really enjoy doing those. Would I
like to follow one of those and really perfect it and become
a professional in photography? Wow, I would love to do
that! Knowing what I know now, I’d probably choose some-
thing else only because I want to learn something else. I
love learning, I would never stop.

tătăl său, și congresele internaționale la care susține
prelegeri. Până și timpul liber și-l dedică tot
stomatologiei, pentru că vrea să devină tot mai bun
pentru pacienții săi.

um este să lucrați împreună cu tatăl dumneavoastră,
la cabinet?
Este o plăcere să muncesc cu el, pentru că el este pri-
mul meu mentor. A fost singurul om care mi-a spus ”Du-te și
învață de la alții, pentru că eu n-am ce să te învăț!”. Un lucru
pe care foarte puțini l-ar face, să-și recunoască limitele. Și el
îmi furnizează pacienți. În ziua de azi, din punctul meu de ve-
dere, brandul cel mai puternic este numele. Și îl stimez pentru
că are 71 de ani și stă 12 ore la cabinet. Eu îmi doresc să ajung
la vârsta asta. Dacă și muncesc, este un bonus.
Când ați decis că vreți să deveniți medic stomatolog?
Eu nu mi-am dorit să devin medic stomatolog. Visul meu a
fost să devin fotbalist. Dar mi s-a explicat foarte frumos, acasă,
că fotbal pot să joc și dacă sunt medic, dar dacă sunt fotbalist
nu pot să practic medicina. Deci, practic, am fost condus pe
drumul ăsta, fără voința mea. Pot să vă spun că în anul I, II, III
de facultate am vrut să renunț în fiecare an de vreo 10 ori la
stomatologie.
Și ce v-a convins să rămâneți, de fiecare dată?
Părinții, aș fi ipocrit să nu recunosc asta. La noi în familie toa-
tă lumea e în domeniul medical: sora mea este medic, mama
mea este medic, tatăl meu este medic, verișoarele mele sunt
medici. Trăind în lumea medicală și auzind toată ziua la masă
vorbindu-se despre medicină, nu poți să-ți alegi să fii chitarist.
Dețineți o clinică la Zalău, The Dental Studio. Cu ce credeți
că veniți în plus față de concurență?
Din punctul meu de vedere, în domeniul medical nu putem
discuta despre concurență. Noi suntem acolo ca să ajutăm oa-

hat is it like to work together with your father, at
the practice?
It’s a pleasure working with him, because he’s my
first mentor. He was the only one who told me: “Go and learn
from others, because I don’t have anything to teach you!”. Few
people would admit their limits like this. And he’s the one
providing me with patients. From my point of view, the most
powerful brand there is today is your name. And I respect him
for being 71 years old and working 12 hours a day in the prac-
tice. I want to live to become his age. If I’d be also able to
work, it would be a bonus.
When did you decide you wanted to be a dentist?
I’d never wanted to become a dentist. My dream was to be-
come a football player. But my parents explained to me that I
can play football if I’m a doctor, but I can’t practice medicine if
I’m a football player. So basically I was lead on this path, with-
out my will. I can tell you that both in the first, second and
third year of college I wanted to drop out of medical school at
least 10 times.
And what made you stay, every time?
My parents, I’d be a hypocrite not to admit it. In our family
everyone is in the medical field: my sister is a doctor, my
mother is a doctor, my father is a doctor, my cousins are doc-
tors. Living in the medical world and hearing about medicine
every day at dinner, you can’t choose to be a guitarist.
You own a practice in Zalău, The Dental Studio. What do you
think is your advantage in front of your competitors?
From my point of view, we can’t talk about competition in the

menii, de-aia suntem medici. Există o legătură personală cu
pacientul, care se dezvoltă în timp. Pot să vă dau un exemplu:
avem pacienți care refuză să se trateze la mine sau le colegii
mei pentru că sunt pacienți de-o viață ai tatălui meu. La asta
nu există concurență.
Cu siguranță. Dar o clinică este, totuși, un business.
Da, și trăim mulți oameni de pe urma acestui business. Ceea ce
ne diferențiază de colegii noștri sunt serviciile de calitate ma-
ximă, promptitudinea, punctualitatea și high end dentistry
(stomatologia la cel mai înalt nivel, n.red.). Dar, repet, scopul
nostru ca medici este să ajutăm pacienții. Concurența se aplică
în business. În medicină, dacă ești un medic corect și respecți
jurământul lui Hippocrate, nu poți să-ți pui un banner pe un
bloc de 20 de metri cu ce faci tu. Nu este etic. În Germania, în
Franța, este interzis să-ți faci reclamă pe Facebook. Este o plă-
cuță standard, 20 pe 20, unde scrie ”medic dentist”. Lumea vi-
ne la noi pentru nevoile pe care le are, nu pentru că avem ban-
ner-ul mai mare sau injectăm nu știu ce. Am observat că mese-
ria asta se transformă din medicină în estetică facială. Mai nou
stomatologii injectează sprâncene, buze, acid hialuronic. Noi
nu asta învățăm.
Care e cea mai memorabilă amintire cu un pacient?
Am o pacientă al cărei tratament a durat vreo doi ani și jumă-
tate. Și în tot acest timp a purtat un batic. Iar după finalizarea
tratamentului ne-a făcut cadou baticul și a spus că nu mai vrea
să-l vadă niciodată. Senzația pe care o are un medic când paci-
entul vine și-ți mulțumește din suflet nu are o valoare materia-
lă. Pot să realizez cele mai complexe restaurări, dacă pacientul
nu este mulțumit, nu are nicio valoare pentru mine, ca medic.
De exemplu, am lucrat de la 2 noaptea până la 6 dimineața
pentru o pacientă care a venit din Italia. S-a sacrificat toată lu-

You can’t compete with that.
Definitely. But a practice is,
still, a business.
Yes and a lot of us are living
off this business. What distin-
guishes us from our colleagues
are the top quality services we offer, our readiness, our punctual-
ity and high end dentistry. But, I repeat, our purpose as doctors
is to help patients. Competition applies to business. In medicine,
if you’re a fair doctor and respect the Hippocratic Oath, you
can’t put a banner with your services on a 65 foot building. It’s
not ethical. In Germany and France, it’s forbidden to advertise
on Facebook. There’s a standard, 8 inch plate, with “dentist”
written on it. People come to us for their needs, not because we
have the bigger banner of because we inject I don’t know what. I
noticed that this profession is turning from medicine into facial
esthetics. Lately dentists inject eyebrows and lips with hyaluron-
ic acid. That’s not what we’ve been taught.
What is the most unforgettable memory you have with a patient?
I have a patients whose treatment lasted for two and a half
years. And during this whole time, she wore a scarf. After we
finished her treatment she gave us her scarf as a gift and told
us she never wants to see it again. You can’t put a price tag on
the feeling a doctor has when a patient comes to thank them
from the bottom of their heart. I can perform the most com-
plex restoration work, but if the patient isn’t satisfied, it has no
value for me, as a doctor. For instance, I’ve worked from 2 AM
to 6 AM for a patient who came from Italy. Everyone in the
clinic sacrificed themselves, we waited for her and, at the end,
at 6 o’clock in the morning, when she saw her reflection in the
mirror she said: “I’m not happy”.
How did you take it?
I told her: “We’ll do anything for you to be happy. We’ll stay
here no matter how long it takes, it’s no problem for us!”. Of
course, it’s frustrating for us, because it means there has been a
communication mistake with the patient. There are patients
with whom you’re on the same page and patients with whom

fost o greșală de comunicare cu pacientul. Sunt pacienți cu care ești
pe aceeași lungime de undă și pacienți cu care nu ești. Și de asta tre-
buie să-ți dai seama din start, de la prima discuție cu pacientul.
Și cum ați rezolvat situația?
I-am plătit bilete de avion, să vină iar, să rezolvăm toate pro-
blemele. Dar asta îți aduce satisfacție. Un pacient mulțumit îți
aduce 5 pacienți. Unul nemulțumit - pleacă 50 de oameni de la
tine. Și atunci, din punctul meu de vedere, un lucru foarte im-
portant este să încerci să-ți mulțumești pacienții.
Pe lângă munca din clinică, susțineți foarte multe conferințe.
Ce vă motivează să faceți acest lucru?
Vreau ca medicii să fie conștienți de ultimele metode, pentru
că asta mă ajută implicit în cazul business-ului. Pentru că n-o
să par eu cel nebun, care propune o metodă nouă de tratament,
iar restul cabinetelor din jurul meu să spună că nu există aceas-
tă metodă. Plus că asta mă motivează să fiu up to date (la cu-
rent, n.red). Pentru că dacă nu aș susține conferințe, m-aș pla-
fona. Dar asta cere foarte mult sacrificiu.
Ce anume sacrificați?
Timp. Renunți la unele hobby-uri și faci asta. Eu sunt un om
foarte norocos pentru că stomatologia este unul dintre
hobby-urile mele. Dar la un moment dat ajungi și la epuizare.
Apoi, noi obișnuiam să luăm masa în familie duminica. În mo-
mentul în care mergi și ții conferințe în multe locuri nu mai
există lucrul ăsta. Și familia își dorește respectarea tradițiilor.
Sunteți căsătorit?
Nu. Vă spuneam că trebuie să faci sacrificii. Ăsta e lucrul pe
care îl regret. Că până la vârsta asta nu am copii și familie. Dar
știți cum e, toate la timpul lor.
Ce vă determină să vreți să deveniți un medic mai bun?
Asta o fac pentru pacienții mei. Pacienții mei merită tot tim-
pul ceva mai bun. Asta mă motivează. Plus, legat de conferințe,
îmi place să întâlnesc mulți oameni și să împărtășesc experien-
ța pe care o am.
Care este cea mai mare provocare sau ambiție a dumneavoastră?
Să încerc să fiu mai bun în fiecare zi. Și să am o familie și co-
pii. Asta îmi doresc.

you’re not. And you must realise this from the very beginning,
from the very first talk with the patient.
How did you solve the situation with the unhappy patient?
I paid for her plane ticket, so that she could come again and
we could fix the problem. But this brings you satisfaction. A
happy patient brings you 5 more patients. An unhappy one
makes you lose 50 people. And that’s why, in my opinion, it’s
very important to try and keep your patients happy.
Besides working in your practice, you also lecture at many
conferences. What motivates you to do this?
I want doctors to be aware of the latest methods, because this
also helps me with my business. I won’t seem the crazy one,
who proposes a new treatment method, while the rest of the
practices around me say that that method doesn’t exist. Plus, it
motivates me to be up to speed. Because if I wouldn’t lecture,
I’d limit myself. But this requires many sacrifices.
What are you sacrificing?
Time. You give up your hobbies to do this. I’m a very lucky
man because dentistry is one of my hobbies. But at a certain
point it wears you out. Besides, we used to eat together, as a
family, on Sundays. When you travel and lecture in many plac-
es, you lose that. And my family wants us to respect traditions.
Are you married?
No. I told you, you have to sacrifice things. This is what I re-
gret: that I don’t have a family and children at my age. But you
know what they say, all in good time.
What makes you want to become a better doctor?
I’m doing this for my patients. My patients always deserve the best.
This keeps me focused. Besides, when it comes to conferences, I
like to meet a lot of people and share my experience with them.
What is your biggest challenge or ambition?
To try and be better, every day. And to have a family and chil-
dren. That’s what I want.

Branding-ul personal ține de cum suntem văzuți de pacienți și de
colegi. Dar diferența dintre un stomatolog bun și unul excepțional
constă în deciziile pe care le luăm și de atenția la detalii.
Ați creat Steigmann Implant Institute. Ce doriți să-i învățați
pe cei care vă calcă pragul?
Acum 20 de ani, la începuturile implantologiei, majoritatea co-
legilor se concentrau asupra osului. Eu mi-am dat seama că, de
fapt, succesul implanturilor depinde de țesutul moale și acum
15 ani am creat un institut de învățământ care se concentrează
pe țesutul moale în implantologie. În timp, tot mai mulți co-
legi și-au dat seama că pentru a avea succes în implantologie
trebuie acordată o atenție deosebită țesutului moale.
Explicați-ne puțin motoul dumneavoastră, ”Think twice”.
Înainte de orice procedură chirurgicală trebuie să ne gândim întot-
deauna foarte bine. Se spune ”Think twice, cut once” (”Gândește de
două ori, taie o singură dată”, n.red.). Motoul meu se referă la faptul
că o dată trebuie să ne gândim la os și a doua oară trebuie să ne gân-
dim la țesutul moale și la menținerea lui în timp. Putem avea un suc-
ces estetic și terapeutic de scurtă durată, 2, 3 sau 4 ani, dar când ne
gândim la un succes de lungă durată trebuie să ”think twice”, să ne
gândim cum adaptăm osul, cum adaptăm țesutul moale, cum creăm
arhitectura țesutului moale și, mai mult, cum o menținem în timp.

hat differentiates a good dentist from an excep-
tional one? Talent, technique, personal branding?
Personal branding is how we’re seen by our patients
and colleagues. But the difference between a good dentist and
an exceptional one lies in the decisions we make and our at-
tention to details.
You’ve created The Steigmann Implant Institute. What do
you want to teach those who come to you?
Twenty years ago, at the beginning of implantology, most of
my colleagues were focusing on the bone. I realised that, actu-
ally, the success of implants depends on the soft tissue. And 15
years ago I created an educational institution that focuses on
the soft tissue in implantology. Meanwhile, more and more
colleagues have realised that in order to be successful in im-
plantology, you must pay special attention to the soft tissue.
Could you please explain us your motto, ”Think twice”?
We always have to think very carefully before any surgical pro-
cedure. There’s a saying, ”Think twice, cut once”. My motto
means we have to think firstly about the bone and secondly
about the soft tissue and maintaining it over time. We can
have short time esthetical and therapeutical success, 2, 3 or 4
years, but when we think about long term success, we have to
”think twice”, to think about how to adapt the bone, how to
adapt the soft tissue, how to create the architecture of the soft
tissue and, moreover, how to maintain it in time.

he private practice you’re running in Milan was found-
ed in the 50’s by your father, dr. Alberto Simion. Your
mother and your sister were also dentists. Was follow-
ing in your parents’ footsteps a choice or a family tradition?
It was a family tradition because when I was a child I heard
my parents speaking about dentistry during dinner, lunch, all
the time. So when I became an adult, I never thought about
doing anything else. My father taught me to have a lot of pas-
sion for the profession, for the work. So I think he is responsi-
ble for my career.
Was your father your role model?
Yes. He loved his work very much and he was working a lot.
He was not a lecturer, he was not traveling the world like I’m
doing because at that time it was not so frequent for Italians to
fly around the world speaking about dentistry and implants.
(laughs) But he was a good dentist in Milan and he had a lot
of fun doing his work. So he inspired me.
What are the most important lessons you’ve learned from
your parents?
To be serious, to work a lot and not to have expectations that come
out of thin air. To build your own reputation for yourself, not to ex-
pect your reputation to come from the work of other people.
What about the best piece of advice you’ve got from them?
When I was young, they taught me that I had to work. They
were dentists and they were reasonably wealthy, but they told

individ aparte. Sunt un om pasionat și pentru că pun accent pe
partea asta, ajung să am niște rezultate poate mai atent verifi-
cate. Asta mă departajează de o parte din colegii mei, care
n-au ajuns încă la capacitatea de a fi foarte, foarte critici cu
munca lor. Dar asta nu înseamnă că nu vor fi.
Care este cel mai bun sfat pe care l-ați primit în carieră?
Să vorbesc mai puțin și să ascult mai mult. Și am încercat să-l
urmez, să-mi ascult pacienții. Majoritatea pacienților care vin la
noi vor să scape de o povară. Unii de o povară cauzată de prob-
lemele dentare, alții de o povară pe care o cauzează familia. Și
atunci, într-o anumită măsură, trebuie să-i ascultăm, bineînțeles,

I’ve had mentors, I have mentors and I will probably
have mentors my whole life because otherwise I
wouldn’t have any points of reference. I had a mentor when I
was in college, I had a mentor who took me under his wing
when I finished school and I have mentors now, when I’m try-
ing to “digest” differently what I learn and practice.
What do you think differentiates you from your fellow col-
leagues?
I don’t think I stand out and I don’t want to be special. I’m a
passionate person and this has helped me have results that
might be better vetted. This is what differentiates me from
some of my colleagues, who haven’t yet reached the ability to
be very, very critical of their work. But that doesn’t mean that
they won’t be.
What is the best advice you’ve received in your career?
To talk less and listed more. And I’ve tried to follow it, to lis-
ten to my patients. Most of the patients who come to us want

Vreau ca echipa din care fac parte și pe care o conduc să se
dezvolte în permanență, și de aceea investesc foarte mult nu
în imaginea echipei, ci în pregătirea ei. Asistăm la cursuri,
luăm informație, o ducem acasă… Este un proiect pe care
l-am avut de la început și o să-l duc până la bun sfârșit, de
a-mi dezvolta echipa și a o stabiliza, a o închega. Pacientul
nu are decât de câștigat în acest fel.
Cum vă propuneți să vă închegați echipa?

Angeles (UCLA). Ce v-a atras la implantologie?
Implantologia dentară este un tratament care le schimbă viața
oamenilor cărora le lipsesc dinți. Cred că persoanele care nu au
dinți suferă de un handicap. Nu doar că nu pot mesteca mânca-
rea, dar arată și cu 10 sau 20 de ani mai în vârstă. Să le rezolvi
problema, prin implanturi, e o experiență care îți schimbă viața
și ție, ca medic, și lor, ca pacienți. În facultate mi-am dorit să fiu
cel mai bun chirurg implantolog și acesta e un vis devenit reali-
tate.
Vă amintiți un pacient anume a cărui viața ați schimbat-o?
Primul meu pacient a fost mama mea. Mama și-a dorit mereu
să-și pună un implant dentar, pentru că purta o proteză dentară
parțială, dar din păcate nu aveam suficienți bani. Așa că atunci
când am absolvit facultatea de stomatologie, ea a devenit primul
meu pacient.
După ce ați obținut un doctorat în stomatologie de la UCLA,
v-ați mutat cu familia din California în zona Boston pentru a
vă continua studiile și a obține un alt doctorat, de la
Universitatea Harvard. De ce a fost obținerea acestui al doilea
doctorat atât de importantă?
A schimbat complet modul în care gândesc și în care privesc o

eram la un stadiu extrem de incipient. La Harvard am învățat că

r. Lee, you completed your bachelor’s degree in
Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA.
What attracted you to implant dentistry?
Implant dentistry is a life-changing treatment for people who
are missing teeth. I think people who are missing teeth are
handicapped. Not only can they not chew, but also they look 10
to 20 years older. Providing something fixed, with implants, is
truly a life-changing experience for the doctor and also for the
patient. I wanted to be the best implant surgeon when I was in
school and it’s truly a dream come true.
Do you remember one particular patient whose life you
changed?
My first patient was my mother. She always wanted to have an
implant, because she was wearing partial dentures, but unfortu-
nately we didn’t have a lot of money. So when I graduated from
dental school she became my first patient.
After earning a doctoral degree in dentistry from UCLA you
moved with your family from California to the Boston area to
further your studies and to earn Doctor of Medical Science
from Harvard University. Why was this second doctoral de-
gree so important for you?
It completely changed the way I think and I look at a problem.
When I first started learning how to do implant dentistry, it was
just at a baby stage. I learned that we have to respect our teach-
ers but we also have to challenge the dogma. We have to always
come up with a new product, an innovation, new methods to be
able to help the patient and I knew I needed more education.
And going to Harvard for a second doctoral degree was truly a
life-changing experience. It put me to the next level, to be able

And what do you enjoy doing together?
We like to go to different parts of the word. Last year the whole
family spent a whole month doing nothing but travelling to-
gether in Asia. And next year our goal is to travel in South
America.
Do you take them with you on your humanitarian missions?
Absolutely! We take our children to the charity work. Right
now they are too young to understand anything, but by seeing
I’m sure they observe how blessed we are.
You’ve once said that humility and curiosity are two of a den-
tist’s most useful tools. Could you please expand on that?
I believe that if dentists believe that we know everything, that
we are the best dentists, then it’s time to retire. Because there
are so many things to learn. In fact, every day in my life I learn
so much. Doctors are forever learning.
If you could add an extra hour to every day, how would you
choose to spend it?
I would like to sleep. (laughs) There are so many things to do
and so little time. Typically I sleep about 4-5 hours. In the class.
(laughs)
What is your idea of happiness?
First, you have to love what you do. You have to have a passion
for what you do. I think financial status is important, but what’s
more important is are you happy with your profession, are you
happy with helping other people? I think I’m still too young to
know what happiness really is. (laughs)
I don’t want to sound morbid, but how would you like to be re-
membered?
I want to be remembered as a good doctor. Not a famous doctor,
but a good doctor. I think being famous can bring a lot of
things, but also you can lose a lot of stuff. We have to have a
balance in life. Being remembered as an ethical and good person
is more important than being remembered as a famous person.
