PART 1

While it sounds like something you don’t want to happen when planning a project, decomposition can
be a useful tool when managing projects. Decomposition is a technique used in project management
that breaks down the workload and tasks before the creation of the work breakdown structure. This
important step can save time in the long run.

In scope management, project deliverables are subdivided into smaller and more manageable
components until the work and deliverables are defined to the work package level. This is called as
decomposition

Project Management on decomposition. Decomposition is an important technique used in WBS creation

(Scope Management) and definition of activities (Time Management).

Decomposition is the systematic process of separating a whole into its parts so that you can identify all
elements of the whole and fully and clearly describe each of these elements. When planning a project,
you try to identify and understand all relevant information at the earliest possible time. Decomposition
helps you accomplish this.

You can use decomposition to investigate any piece of information that you can divide into two or more
subelements. For example, you can divide the following project-related information into subelements:

Audiences

Objectives

Deliverables

Constraints

Assumptions

Work to be performed

Risks
