Lesson Idea Name: Phases of the Moon

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of the position and motion of
the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.
B. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of the moon (new,
crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).

Technology Standard Addressed: Digital Citizen

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

There are so many different ways that as the teacher I would need to make sure that I am meeting the needs
of all of my students. One very simple way that I could do that is to make sure that the questions that are on
the software that I chose could read the question to the students. Then just making sure that there are
multiple means of representation throughout the process, so not all questions are going to look the same or
have the same multiple-choice answer.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the SRT activity I will have the students learning about the phases of the moon. The students will be
using hand on materials to look at each phase of the moon and naming them. They will have to create their
own drawing of the phases of the moon in a way that works best for them. We will discuss why the moon
looks like that at each phase as well as the position of the earth and sun during each moon phase. After the
lesson I will have the students do a “self check” using Plickers. This will give the students an idea of how much
they learned or if there are any areas that they need to go back over again.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT activity I will be walking around and answering any questions that the students might have. I
will clarify that this is just for them to be able to see what exactly they need to practice more with and it is not
a grade. The students will be actively engaged in taking the quiz. This process should last about 15-20
minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
I don’t want the students to focus so much on what is right or wrong I want them to get a good gauge of how
much they know. This will also inform my instruction.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT we will discuss with partners what they feel they need more help on. This will be used to guide
what I will do the following day to clear up misconceptions that the students may have.

How will the data be used?

The data that I collect will be used to inform my instruction for a later class. I will review the information and
see where the students have any misconceptions and determine if there is anything that I need to do to help
the students with.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

For this activity I am trying to see if using Plickers is a good resource to get data on what the students need
more instruction on. I am interested in seeing what the students learned from the instruction from the day.

Reflective Practice:
As a result of this lesson the students should have learned about the phases of the moon. The students
should have had practice recognizing the phases and naming them. One thing that I would like to have done
differently is to have an open ended question where the students are able to tell me if there is something that
they need more direct instruction on. I also like to use the technology all throughout the lesson as a short test
to see if they understand the material.
