Having such a wide variety provided an endless supply of inspiration for designs. [included several styles, including dagger beads of different sizes, teardrops, Magatama fringe beads, and long drops, and some unusual shapes, like lentil drops and petal-shaped drops. You can try using other types of drops in the projects. I used what I felt worked hest, but feel free to experiment! Long drops Some of the drops are considered seed beads. Magatama drop beads (sometimes called fringe beads) and long drops can be irregular in shape, 50 itis best to inspect the beads. It isn’t necessary to discard odd-shaped drops, but grouping similar drops together will provide the most even stitches. This is most evident with the long drops, and you can sort these beads easily by stringing several on your needle all facing the same direction. Any beads that seem out of the ordinary can be set aside for = YY another project. — Other drops and daggers are Czech pressed glass. Dagger beads come in several sizes and styles. The most common dagger sizes are 3x10mm= 717mm, and they are available in many colors and finishes. Daggers also come in a Sx16mm two-hole style, and as half-daggers (which are rounded glass drops in a large range of sizes; they are often referred to as petals. — ) There are also teardrops, pear-shaped drops, duck-bill drops, and leaves: all dried across the top so they hang like a drop bead. pagéers and I've included many of my favorite stitches in this book—peyote ste, aggers herringbone stitch, right-angle weave, and netting techniques. For extra oa help getting started, please refer to the Basics section on p. 21. As you work ‘on these projects, you may notice that many of the components would ‘work in other pieces of jewelry, and so I've included several alternate designs. As with all of my designs, my main objective is to provide fun, wearable designs that are interesting to make and incorporate beading e stitches in new or unusual ways. If you have any questions or comments for me, please feel free to contact me at anna@beadandbutton.com, or use the form through my e Qa oe monthly column “Ask Anna” on the Bead&Button website. ZIPPING UP ENDS ‘To join two sections of a flat peyote piece invisibly, match up the two pieces so the edge beads fit together. “Zip up” the pieces by zigragging through the up-beads on both edges. a BASICS REVIEW STITCH BASICS continued ‘PEYOTE FLAT EVEN-COUNT Pick up an even number of beads [a-b]. These beads will shift to form the first two rows. To begin row 3, pick up a bead, skip the last bead strung in the previous step, and sew through the next bead in the opposite direction [b-c]- For each stitch, pick up a bead, skip a bead in the previous row, and sew through the next bead, exiting the first bead strung [¢-d]. The beads added in this row are higher than the previous. rows and are referred ro as “up-beads.” For each stitch in subsequent rows, pick up a bead, and sew through che next up-bead in the previous row [4-e]. To count peyote stitch rows, count the total number of beads along both straight edges. PEYOTE: FLAT ODD-COUNT °°” ‘Odd-count peyote isthe same as even-count peyote, except for the turn ‘on odd-numbered rows, where the last bead of the row can't be attached in the standard way because there is no up-bead to sew into. ‘The odd-row turn can be convoluted, so I've simplified it here. Please note that the start of this simplified approach is a litte different in that the first beads you pick up are the beads in rows 2 and 3. In the next step, you work row 1 and do a simplified turn. After the turn, you'll work the rest of the piece, beginning with row 4. Pick up an odd number of beads ffig. 1, a-b]. These beads will shift co form rows 2 and 3 in the next step. If you're working a pattern with ‘more than one bead color, make sure you pick up the beads for the correct rows. To begin the next row (row 3), pick up a bead, skip the last bead strung in the previous step, and sew through the next bead in the ‘opposite direction [b-c]. Continue in this manner, exiting the second- to-last bead strung in the previous row [6d]. For the final stitch in the row, pick up a bead, and sew through the first bead strung again [de]. ‘The beads added in this row are higher than previous rows and are referred to as “up-beads.” To work row 4 and all subsequent even-numbered rows, pick up one bead per stitch, exiting the end up-bead in the previous row [fig. 2, a-b]. ‘To work row 5 and all subsequent odd-numbered rows, pick up one bead per stitch, exiting che end up-bead in the previous row [b-c].
