RE: RECOMMENDATION LETTER FOR DR LILIAN NGWONGEM NGWANA EP BANMI FOR AFYA
BORA CONSORTIUM FELOWSHIP IN GLOBAL HEALTH LEADERSHP.

I am happy to recommend Dr Lilian for the Afya Bora fellowship in Global Health. I have known
and worked with Dr Lilian for over 8 years. She is an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist who loves working
with adolescents. This has been seen in her active role in our Adolescent clinic in this hospital where
she is piloting the adolescent ‘Peer educators’ project. She also does sensitization campaigns in
various schools and communities, where she encourages these young ones to make good health
choices. She is always readily available to sensitize the public on any health hazard, via her constant
interactive radio health talks. Dr Lilian has been actively involved in the fight against the
transmission of HIV from mother-to-child (PMTCT). Her passion for AIDS-free kids, got her enrolled
in the PEPFAR (US President’s Emergency Plan For Aids Relief) programme in Cameroon, where she
was trained as a facilitator in PMTCT/Emergency Obstetrics and Neonatal Care (EmONC). Since then,
she has been training other health personnel in different parts of the country on how to help
prevent the spread of the HIV virus from mother-to-child. So far, she has trained more than 300
health personnel in this field. Together with other trained facilitators, this has had a positive impact
in our country, as the transmission rate of HIV from mother-to-child has decreased from 22% in 2011
to approximately 12% in 2016. These outstanding public health engagements, led her to win the
President Obama’s Young African Leader’s Initiative Fellowship – Mandela Washington Fellowship
2016, where she was drilled on servant leadership as a health personnel.

Dr Lilian is open-minded, eager to learn, innovative, inclusive, passionate and respectful. I would
love to support her during her fellowship by providing time and mentorship in research, since that is
her passion. I foresee her as a Global Health HIV specialist after completing this programme.

I am readily available to provide any further information that may be needed.

Yours sincerely,

Dr DOHBIT Julius SAMA
