In today's world, the importance of assessment through written exam in an education

system, which was always debatable, has now become more controversial. Some people
claim that written exam is not essential in testing a person's intellectual skills.
However, opponents suggest that it does prove his/her knowledge. In my opinion, I
believe that written exam does not help to evaluate one's understanding on a given
subject.

At the outset, there are numerous reasons why evaluation by writing is not fruitful
in assessing a student; but the most conspicuous one lies in the fact that written
exam focuses only on writing skills and does not really help in understanding the
other essential skills like speaking and listening. Not only students fail to
develop in other must have skills like reading but also they have a hard time to
communicate or express their understanding properly resulting in unemployment after
they complete their studies. For instance, according a startling new research nearly
60 percent of students who excel in their written assessment fail to secure a job
in their job interviews.

Another justification for upholding this notion is that this patern of evaluation
only focusses on a student's memory skills and not on their expertise on the
subject. Besides, this method will limit the students to memorize the subject only
to score marks, excel in the examination and will not improve their wisdom to help
them get employment.Hence, it is apparent why many are against this method to test
a student's learning ability.

In view of my arguements outlined above, one can conclude that the drawbacks of
asssessment based on written exams are indeed too dire to ignore.
