Question for students: The students as Acme Highschool need to understand the concept of the Bell

Curve. Each Student draws a number from a bag. This number represents a grade that was received on
the last math test. The students do not know whose grade belongs to who, to make the process fair.
With this information, the Students must work together to Solve the Bell Curve Problem.

The numbers are as follows: 40, 50, 55, 55, 60, 65, 70, 70, 70, 80, 85, 85, 90, 90, 100

After working together the students come up with this Belle Curve to present to the teacher.
The teacher then asks the students to provide her with addition information. This time instead of
working as a class, they will be divided into five groups of three.

The Students are to solve for:

1) Mode: The students already know that the mode represents the most commonly used numbers in the
given information and that there can more than one in a set. With this information, the numbers are
already placed in ascending order making solving for the mode a little easier. The teacher wants the
students to understand that a problem can either have no mean or several means. The teacher is look
for:

2) Mean: The students already understand that mean represents all the numbers added up then divided
by how many numbers there are in the set. The teacher is looking for the steps for solving for the mean.

3) Median, Q1, and Q3: The students already understand that the median represents the number in the
middle of the set of given data. The students will need to show their work in locating the median, Q1,
and Q2.
Note: Above you will notice that by finding the median, Q1 and Q3 students can easily find the IQR by
subtracting Q1 from Q3.
