CHAPTER SEVEN– Daniel’s Prophecy of 70 W eeks and the

Covenant

The Covenant

Daniel 9 verse27
“And he shall confirm THE COVENANT with many for one week; and in the midst
of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the
overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”
The big question is – W HAT IS “THE COVENANT?”
I know this might be a surprise to those who are reading this booklet, but we have actual
been looking at the details of the future outworking and expression
THE of
COVENANTall
along! W e have been calling it the Messiah’s Salvation, but the details given to Dani
actually came from a previous announcement by God which Daniel discovered in h
research. Here are the details of the covenant in an expanded form giving the time perio
over which it is operative, together with the six clauses which address its theatre
operation. These simple phrases answer the questions of W HEN the covenant will b
carried out, W HO will benefit from it, W HERE it will happen, and W HAT the covenant w
achieve.

“Seventy w eeks are determ ined

to finish the transgression,
and to make an end of sins

and to make reconciliation for
iniquity
and to bring in everlasting
righteousness
and to seal up the vision and
Has it simply been a case of ‘not being able to see the wood for the trees...’ or has ther
been a concerted effort by Satan to discredit and derail this marvellous covenant and a
of grace on the part of God?”
i

W e couldask the question – why would Gabriel refer the

to “covenant ” with Daniel in
such a familiar way, if Daniel had no idea which Covenant he was talking about?
It is not just any old covenant or peace agreement being talked about here,
THE but
COVENANTpromise made by God which led to the nativity and the coming of the Lamb o
God to take away the sins of the World.
It was the ‘greatest act of grace and mercy covenant’ ever to be promised by God; whic
was confirmed on time, “in the midst of the week,” by the death of Jesus Christ the
Messiah on the cross.
Obviously the covenant must already exist if it is to be confirmed or made stronger durin
a specific seven year period! The Covenant ’s outworking is in the “box” above. It states
who the people are who will be the recipients of the covenant’s provisions, (i.e., Daniel
people), and it also states where it is to be carried out (i.e., Jerusalem, the holy city).
In fact such a future Covenant had been foretold in Isaiah 59:20-21, and also in Isaia
61:8b-10.
Isaiah 59:20 -21 “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn
from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. As for me, this is my covenant
with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I
have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of
thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from
henceforth and for ever.”
Isaiah 61:8b-10 “...and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. And
their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the
people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which
the LORD hath blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful
in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he
hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridgegroom decketh
himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Furtherm ore the two special aspects of this new covenant – salvation and righteousness
had already been committed to scripture by Jeremiah
.
If we go back toDaniel 9:1-2we read “In the first year of Darius the son of
Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the
Chaldeans; In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the
number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah
the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations
of Jerusalem.”
“Hmmmm…” (As Yoda of Star W ars fame would say) “Reading books – has Daniel been
Jeremiah it was...!”
Daniel had obviouslybeen reading Jeremiah’s writings where he warned the Nation about
the coming desolation of Jerusalem by the Babylonians who were rising to power in 60
B.C., and of Judah’s future captivity period of 70 years.
Jerem iah 25:8-12 “Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not
heard my words, Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith
the LORD, and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring
them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these

2
nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an
astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. Moreover I will take
from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the
bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light
of the candle. And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an
astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy
years. And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished,
that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD,
for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it
perpetual desolations.”

Jerem iah’s letter to the first deported captives

in Babylon -
Skip over a few pages to Jeremiah chapter– 29 to the actual letter that Jeremiah sent to
the captives who were carried away to Babylon in 597 B.C. prior to Jerusalem ’s destructio
in 586 B.C., to give them further instruction as to how to survive their captivity in Babylo
and also to describe the disasters and persecutions to be faced by those who were left
Jerusalem.
Jerem iah 29:1“Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the
prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were
carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the
people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to
Babylon.
Jerem iah 29:10- 14 “For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be
accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word
toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the
thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace,
and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon
me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And
ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
And I will be found of you, saith the LORD, and I will turn away your captivity, and
I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have
driven you, saith the LORD, and I will bring you again into the place whence I
caused you to be carried away captive.”

Jerem iah’s book sent to the

first deported captives in Babylon -
Furtherm ore Jeremiah had been commanded to write all the words that God had spoke
regarding their return to the land and put them in a book
Jerem
- iah 30:1-2, . 4 “The
word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, thus speaketh the LORD God
of Israel, saying, “Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a
book.” And these are the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and
concerning Judah...”

3
The succeeding chapters 30 – 33 were written in the
th
year
10 of Zedekiah on the eve of
the final collapse of Judah as the Babylonian army was battering against the walls
Jerusalem. In spite of the darkness surrounding the people of Judah and their Cit
Jeremiah presents in these chapters, fresh hope for the restoration, prosperity and peac
of both houses of Israel.
As Daniel, now an old man, (circa. 538 B.C.) read from the letter and book of Jeremiah
(circa. 606 B.C.) he obviously took all this bad news, good news, and instruction to hear
Since the 70 years of captivity was prophesied to soon come to an end, he did a
instructed and he prayed about it, and just as he did“w ord
a cam e forth”
(Dan. 9:23),
instructing Gabriel to tell Daniel about the future.
W e might also ask, what else did Daniel read while hesearching
was through the Book of
Jeremiah?
Since he only had his memory to go by, and didn’t have the luxury of the KJV, Thompso
Chain Reference Bible and Strong’s Concordance! I expect he read the entire book
Jeremiah to which he had access, to find out how and when God was going to restore th
captives to Jerusalem.I expect while he was reading he came across something that
intrigued him greatly – it was just a page or two (or a wind of the scroll) from where he ha
been reading the letter, and he found it in the book Jeremiah had written to the captives
Jeremiah described it as a “New Covenant”.

The Jerem iah Code – “The Covenant”

It is found inJerem iah 31:31-34

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will
make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; not
according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took
them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant
they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD. But this shall
be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel;

After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law

in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts;
and will be their God, and they shall be my
people. And they shall teach no more every man
his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying,
Know the LORD, but they shall all know me, from
the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith
the LORD, for I will forgive their iniquity, and I

4
And what are “those days” referring to? The “days” that Daniel had just been readin
about. The seventy years captivity that were drawing to a close, were “those days”. Th
New Covenant declared that AFTER “those days” God was going to set in motion
permanent solution for the sins and iniquities of Daniel’s people.
After reading about this marvellous promise, and having prayed about the matter i
response to the instructions contained in Jeremiah 29:12; Daniel was astonished when th
angel Gabriel was immediately sent to give him the timetable for its future fulfilment.
This new covenant would be based on “mercy” and “grace”, and not based on keeping th
law which they received as they came out of Egypt. A “new covenant” becam
necessary because the Children of Israel broke the previous “marriage covenant” whic
was made at Mt. Sinai.
The original covenant
which the Nation of Israel broke is found in -
Exodus 19:5-6“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep
my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all
people; for all the earth is mine; And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of
priests, and an holy nation.”
After Moses had received the laws of God and had written them down, he came to
the Children of Israel again –
Exodus 24:3-8“And Moses came and told the people all the words of the
LORD, and all the judgments; and all the people answered with one voice,
and said, ALL THE WORDS WHICH THE LORD HATH SAID WILL WE DO. And
Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning,
and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the
twelve tribes of Israel. And he sent young men of the children of Israel,
which offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto
the LORD. And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half
of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. And he took the book of the
covenant, and read in the audience of the people; and they said, ALL THAT
THE LORD HATH SAID WILL WE DO, AND BE OBEDIENT. And Moses took
the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, BEHOLD THE BLOOD
OF THE COVENANT, WHICH THE LORD HATH MADE WITH YOU
CONCERNING ALL THESE WORDS.”
This ceremony which took place at the altar “under the hill” with the twelve pillars,
was symbolic of a marriage ceremony between God and His people who became in
“biblical terms” His W ife. However, the terms of the covenant were dependent
upon the obedience of the people to the Laws of God, which laws they could not
keep, and quickly broke. The sad story is told in Exodus 32.
The broken covenant and the sin of the people of Israel eventually led to “blessing”
and “cursing” being set before them, and the pronouncement of their eventual
dispersion among the surrounding Nations. However, Deuteronomy 29, (especially
vs.14-15) and 30 also contain the elements of a renewal of the covenant between
Israel and the Lord, and Deut. 30:3-6 promises that God will eventually solve the
problem by re-gathering them and “circumcising their hearts”.

5
Hundreds of years later their continual sin and disobedience to the law, which resulted
their destruction and dispersal, is the reason for the inauguration of a “new covenant” an
it fell to the prophet Jeremiah to announce its promise even before Jerusalem finally fell
the Armies of Nebuchadnezzar.
The new covenant would encompass two specific areas “righteousness”
– in the inner
“spiritual life” when the law of God would be written on their hearts - and by means
some unexplained future plan, “salvation” when God would forgive their iniquities an
“permanently” deal with their sin.
Gabriel and Daniel actually had a conversation when Gabriel delivered the 70 W eek
prophecy to him. Daniel 9:21“Whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man
Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly
swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he informed me,
and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill
and understanding….therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision”.
I have no doubt at all what one of the topics of conversation was – I can almost hear Dani
asking thequestion -
“W HAT IS THISNEW
‘ COVENANT’
THAT JEREMIAH IS W RITING ABOUT?”
Gabriel gave him an “expanded answer” in verse 24 -New TheCovenantis for Daniel’s
People – but it will not take place immediately, because Jerusalem needs to be rebuilt firs
From the date of the commandment to do so however, the timetable as given would com
into operation, and deal with specific problems relating to the sins of Israel and Judah -
to finish the transgression,
and to m ake an end of sins,
and to m ake reconciliation for iniquity
and to bring in everlasting righteousness
and to seal up the vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the m ost Holy.”
These six clauses expand or make stronger the three basic promises contained i
Jeremiah’s words “I – will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their
hearts ... I will forgive their iniquity ...,
and I w ill rem em ber their sin no m ore”
.

W e now know that the first

part of these promises was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost
when Jews from throughout the whole Roman Empire who were gathered in Jerusalem
saw, heard and experienced the Holy Spirit alight on the heads of the Jewish believers
Christ. On this date – Pentecost - the law was put in their inward parts and written on the
hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit who had come to “abide” within them.
But first, the essential work of salvation had to be accomplished -
In Dan. 9:25 Gabriel explained that the “vehicle” fornew this Covenant would be the
Messiah, and the long interval prior to the covenant becoming operative would not beg
until after “those days” i.e., the 70 years of captivity – however, the period of time wa
couched not in “70 years”, but in “70
weeks of years
” i.e. 490 years overall.

6
Both the New Testament Epistle to the Romans and the Epistle to the Hebrews recogniz
that thisNew Covenantprophecy was fulfilled by Jesus – refer
Rom ans 11:27,(quoting
Isaiah 59:20-21 and 27:9)
“And so all Israel shall be saved; as it is written,
There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away
ungodliness from Jacob; For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall
take away their sins.”
Hebrews 8:6-13argues the point from the supremacy of Jesus as the Great High Priest -
“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the
mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For
if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought
for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith…
(And this Hebrews passage concludes with a direct quote Jerem
from iah 31:31-34
above)
“…Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not according to the covenant
that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead
them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I
regarded them not, saith the Lord.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of
Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws
into their mind, and write them in their hearts; and I will
be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people; And
they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every
man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all shall know
me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful
to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their

In that he said, a new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which
decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away,”
Hebrews chapters eight, nine and tendeal thoroughly with the disadvantages of the old
external covenant of Temple sacrifices and the ritual of animal’s blood to “cover” their sin
instituted by Moses; compared with the new internal covenant through the blood of Chri
which would take their sins “away”.
Hebrews 9:14-15New RSV “How much more will the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our
conscience from dead works to worship the living God! For this reason he is the
mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the
promised eternal inheritance, because a death has occurred that redeems them
from the transgressions under the first covenant.”
Hebrews 12:24also describes“…Jesus the mediator of the new covenant….”
This brings us to the question – oWwill
h benefit when the Covenant is implemented?

7
And he shall confirm the covenant with m any –

Daniel 9:27 “And he shall confirm THE COVENANT with many for one week;
Not only is Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, He is also the one who came
confirmby his death, the New Covenant outlined by Jeremiahmany with people - i.e. the
Jews first and then the Gentiles; for it is only through the death of the “testator” that th
covenant becomes operative.
Rom ans 15:8-12“Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision
for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers; and
that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this
cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And
again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord,
all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Isaiah saith, There shall be
a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the
Gentiles trust.
Galatians 3:17“And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of
God in Christ…”
Once the covenant had been “confirmed” by his death, the temple and sacrifices wer
obsolete from that moment on, and in time (a generation later) they were destroyed an
done away with altogether. A new way had been opened up, through the veil, into th
“Holy of Holies” through the blood of Jesus.
Jesus knew all about this New Covenant and He knew what was required to confirm it –
was confirmed by Him being “cut off” and in the shedding of His blood, and the releasing
His Holy Spirit into the world. This event is foreshadowed in Jesus’ parable of the “Wicke
Servants” in Luke 20:9-19.
This is the ONLY SCENARIO possible by which the two parts of Jeremiah’s covenant cou
be fulfilled; (i.e., Salvation and justification, when His blood dealt with the sin problem
and Righteousness and Sanctification when His Holy Spirit dealt with the inner “spiritu
laws being written in our hearts and minds”).
In his Gospel, John 19:34 sees a connection between the “blood and the water” that issue
from the pierced side of Jesus, which exhibits the two grand doctrines of the gosp
message – i.e. justification and sanctification. The blood of Christ is needed for the forme
and the “grace of the spirit” is needed for the latter. In the Old Testament the countle
sacrifices indicate the need for blood to be shed for atonem ent, and the Spirit was neede
for sanctification, as the many washings of water by the law showed.
The execution of the prophesied “covenant’s” requirements would be carried out b
Messiah the Prince, for the salvation of Daniel’s people which is the subject of Dani
chapter 9. The covenant is therefore, not some “make-believe peace agreement” made b
a “supposed end-time Roman ruler”!
Daniel 9:27 “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week; and in
the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and

8
for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the
consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”
The Messiah came exactly after the end of theth
week
69 of the Prophecy of Daniel to
commence his ministry, (just as theth 70week began), to proclaim Himself as the
“anointed one” and announce the “acceptable year of the Lord”. He came to confirm th
NEW COVENANTwith manyfor thefinal weekof the specified period; the “benefits” and
subsequent “desolations” of which are opened ended in time until the consummation.
God proclaimed a new covenant of Atonement for sin for Israel through the mouth and pe
of Jeremiah, and reiterated the promise through the mouth of Gabriel as he conversed wi
Daniel, who then wrote down the details.
Jesus came to fulfil the Covenant exclusively for Daniel’s people the Jews, until the stonin
of Stephen: when it was extended to the Gentiles. Since then it is available for all peopl
for all time.
ii

The Covenant was confirm ed by Jesus

when he was “cut
off”!

To prove th
a t it was Jesus who confirmed the covenant with many in Daniel 9:27, we should
now look at the words – “confirm the covenant” and see what they mean.
The Hebrew word used for “confirm ”is Strong’s No. 1396 “gabar” It means - to rise,
flood, to be greater, stronger, to prevail, or to overwhelm. It is used in various places a
“to strengthen” - “to cause to triumph”, or “confirm a covenant” (as here).
The Hebrew word for “covenant”is Strong’s No. 1285“brit” - translated as – covenant,
treaty, compact, agreement, an association between two parties with variou
responsibilities, benefits, and penalties. The phrase “to cut a covenant” means to “make
covenant” and figures the act of cerem onially cutting anim
an al into two parts, with
an implication of serious consequences for not fulfilling the covenant.
This aspect of the “cutting of a covenant” is found in the phrase
Danin9:26 “And after
threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself…” The
phrase “cut off” is Strongs Hebrew word No. 3772 “karat”and this implies the “Cutting
of the sacrificial animal” to confirm a covenant. (Compare Genesis 15:9-18).
As has been pointed out earlier in thebooklet – there is this dividing of the Messianic
Ministry both in the words Jesus spoke in the Synagogue, and in the fact stofAdvent
his 1
when he came as the Lamb of God and was “cut off” andndHis Advent,
2 when he will
come as conquering King, which is yet to come. In this sense, there was the act
ceremonially cutting the “sacrificial lamb” into two parts, one historical, the other y
future.
This is the reason that the Jews will mourn when they see their Messiah. It is th
“wounds” that he bears which convince them that he was indeed the Messiah who wa
“cut off” i.e. “pierced” (ceremonially killed) to confirm the new covenant proclaimed b
Jeremiah. C/fZechariah 12:10-11

9
W ho are “the m any” that the Covenant is for?

The next question we need to ask – who benefited from this cutting off? If it wasn’t f
himself then who was it for?
W ho was the nd
2 Party to this Covenant given by God. The answer is – MANY people…..
You, me and“…whosoever believeth in him…” John 3:16. It was a universal and
unconditional covenant. In Jesus own words Matt.
- 20:28 “Even as the Son of
man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life
a ransom FOR MANY.”
This Covenant was bigger, greater, wider and more encompassing than any previou
covenant that God had made with the Israelites, because it included the Gentiles as we
W e are the“MANY”, Praise God!
Prior to the NEW COVENANT, God’s relationship had only been with the FEW – those
Abraham’s natural human seed. In a sense, the new covenant also confirmed o
strengthened the previous Covenants made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Davi
for it moved all these covenants on to a “higher” level – one where the Spirit of God wou
dwell (not in a “house or temple” made with human hands) but “within” the Spiritu
Temple, or the heart of “man” himself.
1 Cor 3:16 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of
God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy;
for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”
The New Covenant, as promised by Jeremiah, was described as benefiting the House
Israel, and the House of Judah. It was to supersede the old Mosaic Covenant which the 1
tribes had broken. If we use the word “gabar” (confirm) in the sense of making the
covenant, greater and stronger, then that is EXACTLY what Jesus did. He fulfilled th
covenant with the Jews during theth 70week, within the allotted time period, i.e. 70 weeks
of years (490 years) from the order to re-establish Jerusalem, when it was offere
exclusively to the Jews, until after the stoning of Stephen. However, Jesus’ rejection by th
Jewish Leaders, Scribes and Pharisees during that week, resulted in the covenant bein
made available to all mankind, which included the whole house of Israel and the Gentiles.
Prior to thecrucifixion, according to Matthew 10:5 and Matthew 15:22-28, Jesus limited his
missionary approach to the Jews alone; but after his resurrection, he included all nations
the Great Commission. However, the gospel of John records an instance of Greeks comin
to meet Jesus, which Jesus apparently approved of in John 12:20-32, and he also record
Jesus’ conversion of the Samaritans in John 4:1-42.
Jeremiah’s NEW COVENANT was confirmed in all aspects by Jesus, the Chris
(“anointed”/Messiah). He was “cut off” to confirm it and strengthen it, and to save a
mankind.

W hat did Jesus say about this

new Covenant?

10
1. The forgiveness of sins.During the last supper He said -
Matt 26:28-29New RSV “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out FOR MANY for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will never again
drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my
Father’s Kingdom.”
2. The Prom ise of com fort and truth
in the heart.
John 13:16-17a “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth...” John
15:26 “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the
Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify
of me...” John 16:7 “...It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I depart, I will
send him unto you And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment...” v. 13 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth,
is come, he will guide you into all truth, for he shall not speak of himself; but
whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to
come.”
Jeremiah wrote of this new Covenant “I –will put my law in their inward parts, and
write it in their hearts” and “I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their
sin no more” - Jer. 31:33
Jesus fulfilled those two aspects of the new covenant. Paul added to this truth by
explaining “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?
But we have the mind of Christ.” “Let this mind be in you which was also in
Christ Jesus.” 1 Cor. 2:16 and Phil. 2:5
As a result - W e are to have the mind of Christ –God’s law is now written in our flesh
hearts by the Holy Spirit and read by all men as they view how we conduct our lives –
Cor. 3:2-3

The Results of the Covenant

-

This new covenant had two distinct and very different purposes and results to thos
previously given by God.
This covenant was not an outward ritual covenant, sealed by the sprinkling of blood on an
earthly altar and upon thend 2party to the covenant, as in the old “blood sacrifice” Mosaic
Covenant; but it is an inward covenant, memorialised and symbolised by the communio
service; when we “partake” of the body and blood of Christ in the bread and win
“elements” which represents His sacrificial death for sin, and His continuing life within u
through the Holy Spirit. It is a feast of remembrance, which always speaks of the tw
elements which are implicit in the new covenant – the forgiveness of sins – and Christ
indwelling spirit of truth, i.e. the law written in our hearts.

11
Previously the People of Israel had been commanded to keep the by law
outward
observance of its rules and regulations, but in all points they failed. It was necessary fo
God to do something extraordinary, and it transpired as planned and promised, that aft
Jesus’ death, the Holy Spirit was released in power into the lives of his followers. Th
“spiritual” law now resides within those who have put their faith in his redemptive wor
and by the Power of the Holy Spirit, the nature of Christ is reproduced in the lives of h
obedient and faithful disciples.

The Vehicle through which the covenant blessings cam e –

The Holy Spirit –

John the Baptist said of Jesus“There

– cometh one mightier than I after me, the
latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed
have baptized you with water; but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. –
Mark 1:7-8 .
Jesus said of the Holy Spirit“But
- the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” – John 14:26.
Paul said of believers in 1 Cor. 2:14-15“But the natural man receiveth not the
things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all
things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the
Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
The Holy Spirit is the baptiser into the new birth, and without his help, comfort an
guidance, our faith would be only intellectual “head knowledge” of matters concernin
God. It is the Holy Spirit who indwells us and transforms our thinking and behaviour in
the likeness of Christ.

Is any part of the prophecy yet to be fulfilled?

I have already discussed in several places the fact that the Messiah’s Salvation wa
completely fulfilled by Jesus in the first half of the
th
W70
eek of Daniel’s prophecy, and the
availability of the salvation promises in the Covenant continued exclusively for the Jews b
the preaching of the Apostles and Disciples into the second half of ththat week
70 and
beyond. At that point the Covenant was extended to the Gentiles by the Apostle Pete
and particularly through the work and witness of the Apostle Paul; and so it will rema
available to both Jews and Gentiles until the “consummation” which is still in the future.
However, as outlined in Chapter Three, the other half of the Messiah’s mandate (Isaiah
61:1-3) called The Days of Vengeance, was announced by Jesus just prior to his death.
“type” or precursor of this judgement occurred at the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD until th
end of the war at Masada in 73 AD.

12
Gabriel informed Daniel Dan.
in 9:27b
. that “for the overspreading of abominations
he” (The Messiah)“shall make IT” (the old sanctuary)“desolate, even until the
consummation, when that which has been determined shall be poured upon the
desolate.”
The Hebrew word for “consummation”“kala” is Strong’s No. 3617. It means complete
destruction, and is used in the sense of “full end”, or fulfilment, or completion.
Today, as you read these scriptures, a foreign abomination “temple” still resides upon th
site of the Jerusalem sanctuary. The Dome of the Rock is continuing to make the site
the sanctuary desolate to all Jews. The age of the Gentiles is therefore not completed yet
Rom ans 11:25-26“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this
mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is
happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel
shall be saved; as it is written. There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and
shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is my covenant unto them,
when I shall take away their sins.”
Israel is yet to experienceNational
a Spiritual revival as outlined in Ezekiel 37:14 and Joel
2:28 and Zechariah 12:10, but God’s covenant is still available to them, when they can b
see it. It would appear that Israel does not experience this spiritual awakening until a tim
of great trouble descends upon them and their land.
Zechariah 12:9-10“And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to
destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the
house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of
supplications; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they
shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness
for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”
Joel 2:32 “And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the
LORD shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance,
as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.”
God has promised in Rev. 11:1-12 that he will send two witnesses to prophesy to Israel
from “the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our
Lord was crucified” for 1260 days clothed in sackcloth, during the Tribulation period,
when they witness to the truth of the gospel, and deliverance will be available
Jerusalem. W ho these witnesses might be, has caused many names to be offered a
possibilities. However, the whole World witnesses their death and resurrection at the en
of their 1260 days of testimony. The events in the Book of Revelation indicate that th
same period of 3½ years tribulation will finally fulfil the Days of Vengeance announced b
Jesus as he went to the cross. During this period salvation will still be available to the Jew
and the W orld, as the last half of the Messiah’s mandate is fulfilled, when out of traged
will come triumph, out of despair will come hope, and out of sorrow will come joy when th
Jewish Nation finally is cured of their spiritual blindness, and recognise Jesus Christ as the
crucified Messiah.
Isaiah 61:2b-
7 “...and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that
mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for

13
ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of
heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the
LORD that he might be glorified. And they shall build the old wastes, they shall
raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the
desolations of many generations. And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,
and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. But ye
shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our
God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast
yourselves. For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall
rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double:
everlasting joy shall be unto them...”
W hen the Jews turn their attention to the one whom they crucified, God will hear an
answer their prayers. In the full day of vengeance yet to be experienced by Israel an
the godless nations, He will still be available
“…to
– comfort all that mourn, to appoint
unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy
for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness...” Isaiah 61:2b-
3a.
On the Day of Pentecost the Apostle Peter warned the Jewish Nation that those that did n
hear the testimony of Jesus Christ would be destroyed from among the people.
Acts 3:19-26“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be
blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the
Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you; Whom
the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God
hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. For
Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up
unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things
whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul,
which will not hear that prophet, (Jesus) shall be destroyed from among the
people. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as
many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye are the children
of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying
unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
Unto you first, God having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in
turning away every one of you from his iniquities.”
Hebrews 9:28“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and
unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto
salvation.”
The climax of the days of vengeance comes after the resurrection of the two witnesse
with the sounding of the Seventh Trumpet which announces the Triumph of Christ
Kingdom on earth –
Rev. 11:15-18“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in
heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our
Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and
twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and

14
worshipped God, saying We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art,
and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and
hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of
the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto
thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small
and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.”.
This is our Blessed Hope, because Jesus fulfilled the Covenant spoken of in the Jeremia
code; He strengthened, and confirmed the Covenant in the manner described in Dani
9:24-27, and extended it to MANY through his shed blood and sacrificial death.
HOW EVER, the consumm ation is yet to be….when the spirit of grace and supplication
poured out upon the desolate... and when the wrath of God is poured out upon th
wicked.
Jerem iah 30:7-10 “Alas, for that day is great, so that none is like it; it is even the
time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass
in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck,
and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him;
But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise
up unto them. Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD,
neither be dismayed, O Israel; for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed
from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and
be quiet, and no one shall make him afraid….”
v. 23-24“Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing
whirlwind; it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of
the LORD shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the
intents of his heart; in the latter days ye shall consider it.”

Because popular Christian “traditions” have stated that it is a Roman Prince like Titus, (whose people destroyed
Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 A.D.) who will confirm “a covenant” prior to a 7 year tribulation; many people have
been looking to the European Common Market – European Community – Western European Union – etc., for someone
(anti-Christ) to make a 7 year peace agreement with Israel, which will then be broken after 3 ½ years. They state that
such a peace agreement is “the covenant” referred to in this verse. The fact that the covenant is to be “confirmed” also
causes people to look at the Oslo accords, the Road Map, and other recent “peace” initiatives for Israel, that no one has
adhered to, and look for them to be re-affirmed! However, “peace” has eluded Israel ever since 1948, in spite of the
Nobel prizes and handshakes on the front lawn of the White House.

Instead, it is the premise of this booklet that “THE COVENANT” was a God given covenant for the Salvation of the
Jews, which was confirmed through the ministry and death of the Messiah the Prince, and the subsequent preaching of
the disciples exclusively for the Jews during the existence of a re-built Jerusalem and Temple, (from 27 A.D. until 34
A.D.) prior to its 2nd desolation by the Roman Armies in 70AD.

ii
It is interesting to note that the covenant was specifically and exclusively intended for the Jews at first, and was not
offered to the Gentiles until after the Apostle Peter’s vision of the great sheet let down from Heaven, found in Acts
10:9-48. This was after Stephen’s martyrdom in Acts 7:54-8:4, when the Jewish leaders rejected their Messiah’s offer
of Salvation. Peter’s subsequent instruction by the Holy Spirit, to take the Gospel to Cornelius and the Gentiles
gathered at his home, was confirmed by the Holy Spirit’s presence in the new believers; and it was accepted that God
intended the covenant to be extended to “the many” or all mankind.
