MEANING OF SELECTION

 “Selection is the process of carefully screening the

candidates to choose the most suitable persons for the job
vacancies to be filled in.” Under it the qualifications,
experience, background, skills, aptitude, personality of
applicants are compared with the requirements of the job.

 It involves a series of steps by which candidates are screened

to identify the most suitable persons for the job.
 It is the process of dividing all the candidates into two
categories –
a) Those who are to be employed and
b) Those who are to be rejected.
 It is called a negative process because unsuitable
candidates are eliminated or rejected in order to identify the
suitable candidates. The number of candidates rejected are
much more than those actually selected.

 Selection techniques and methods are more reliable for

rejection of unsatisfactory candidates than for identifying the
ideal candidates.
 Selection is always done after recruitment.
 The basic purpose of selection is to choose the right type
of candidates to fill various positions in the organisation.
