NRU can be seen in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Plant.

NRU purpose to remove nitrogen gas (N2) from LNG Product.

NRU is designed based on difference of boiling point of methane gas and the N2.
The LNG is mostly methane (CH4) that the methane has boiling point of -161 deg
C while the N2 has boiling point of -196 deg C.
It means the N2 is more volatile compare to CH4.

Following is simple processing of the NRU :

1. JT Valve / Expander

The LNG pressure is reduced with JT (Joule Thompson) Valve or Turbo Expander
and it will reduce the LNG temperature.
Changing of the LNG pressure & temperature will change phase equilibrium of the
LNG Product.
The N2 leaves liquid phase and move to gas phase.
In HYSYS you can see vapor fraction of the LNG is not zero (but still less than 1). It
means any vapor in the LNG.

1. Separator

After that, the LNG is fed to separator to separate the LNG into gas phase and
liquid phase.
The N2 composition in gas phase is more than in liquid phase.
The LNG in liquid phase will be called as LNG PRODUCT and will be pumped to
LNG Storage Tank.

When you think the N2 composition in the LNG PRODUCT is still more, you can
send the LNG PRODUCT to column distillation before deliver to the LNG Storage
Tank. In distillation column, the N2 will be removed from the LNG PRODUCT.

1. Distillation Column

In distillation column the N2 will be as top product (in gas phase) and the LNG
PRODUCT will be as bottom product (in liquid phase) and pumped to LNG Storage
Tank.
The N2 composition in LNG PRODUCT is too small and near zero.

Hope it can help you.
