1. Introducing BMW
BMW (BARC India Media WorkStation) is the new software application specially designed to
analyse media and advertising audience results.
Indeed, BMW introduces some very important features. BMW is written using the widely
known high level programming environment Visual C++, allowing the software to run in an
efficient and fast way.
Another important issue that makes this BMW a unique software is the possibility of
implementing new external features and functionalities, which makes it a lighter and reusable
program. Since it is a Component based software, using BARCIndia Object Modules, it enables
us to easily add new functionalities and details to BMW. Furthermore, it’s a very friendly
software, easier to work with and with an attractive visuals.
For the moment, BMW uses Household viewership and TV advertising databases.

1.1. Main BMW features

Right now, one of the most interesting BMW features is the existence of modules which allows
users to create and edit their own Reports and Analysis putting them all together in the one
Template.
An important concept is the “User Access Level” methodology. With BMW, users can be
grouped according to their access level into the application. This is the concept of User
Hierarchy. On the top of hierarchy is the System Administrator; in the middle is the Group
Manager and on the bottom is the Common User.
BMW is also an advanced software in visual terms because it uses a friendly and modern layout
that is easier to read and work with. For instance, you have much more flexibility creating
Behavioural Targets easily and quickly.
The Menu Designer (available to system admin only) module guarantees a large flexibility to
reconfigure the BMW layout as you’d like to see it. Through the Menu Designer the admin
himself can change the BMW appearance, disable analysis for certain users (an easy way of
creating lighter versions of BMW), and upgrade the application and so on.
The BMW wallpaper gives users the possibility to freely fill up the background screen of BMW,
by adding their own images, html pages, web pages, etc.
The connectivity between analysis present in BMW is a major benefit for users, because they
can easily go directly from an analysis to any other and vice-versa.

BMW USER GUIDE
The layout multipage enhanced grouping available in Reports is a very powerful feature that
enables the possibility to run several analyses at once from 1 same set of filters with different
layouts.
Through the Colouring feature, users can create conditions and easily make alerts using
symbols or identify patterns with colours and symbols.
Tops and Sorts can be applied at both insertions and totals level (Sort Nodes and Top Nodes)
The Variables Creator module enables users to create their own customised variables using the
existing (built-in) ones, without needing to have them hard-coded.
The Entity Manager module enables users to create its own customised entities (information
organisers) and to use them in Report Layouts to organise analysis and reports. This gives users
the freedom to add new classifications/descriptions of Events.
The Targets Module became more open and flexible so users do not have to leave the Base
Query to create a new target. Now, any target created, either through the Control Panel or
when in the Base Query, is available in any Module and to any analysis.
A Print tool allows better image quality when printing and configuring the Preview layout. You
will notice these improvements specially when printing a Grid analysis. BMW is capable of
sending analysis (.xls file and .txt file) by email to the addresses you specify. Other features are
Base TV Viewer defined in % of time viewing, Behaviour Targets by intersection of cells, contact
distribution curve at insertion level and more, much more.

1.2. Most Relevant Analysis

The most relevant analysis available in BARC India Media WorkStation are:

Time-Bands. Report Time-Bands;

Programs. Report Programs, Report TV nets;
Advertising. Report Advertising.

These are the core analysis of BMW, each one connected to a specific database. However,
BMW does so much more than the main reports and has other modules available:
Classic Grid. This analysis relates both to Time-bands and to Programs and it builds a grid of
programs, filtered (split) by time slots, with the daily audience values (audience variables) for
each program.
Individual Analysis. Introduction of a new method of selecting events and the possibility to
make Organizations in every output;
Ratings Curve. BMW uses a more flexible module, which allows making multidimensional
selections and displaying more than one audience variable at the same time. It also gives you
the freedom to create user-defined Layouts instead of being restricted to predefined ones.
Furthermore, Ratings Curve works with Filters (Programs Type and Level);
5

Switching graph/table – It is a specific tool to analyze switching behavior of Household among
different Channels. The Switching graph presents a Programs Grid and complements it with a
Bar Chart regarding the audience source for each Time Slot. The Switching table shows the exact
values represented on those Bars;
Video Analysis. The Teleview Suite option provides a graphic analysis that allows studying a
detailed day audience. Otherwise, Teleview Preview is an extremely useful option that permits
the User getting a visual report with images for a selected channel/program in a specific time
period.

1.3. BMW Configuration

BMW was developed to work under standard configurations. However it is recommended that
you use the following configurations:

 Windows® XP

BMW requires a User Name and a Password to login.
Someone with Admin privileges will define your User Name and Password. When using BMW
for the first time, it will prompted you to change the password given to you for one of your
choice.

The main window will appear as seen in the following figure:

There are some options available directly from this screen, which are also available on
submenus by right clicking with the mouse cursor.
The User can run these options clicking it with the left button:
• Copy – Allows copying the analysis information to any Windows word-processor or
spreadsheet (Word for Windows and Excel). The user can select all the analysis or just
part of it; this option will copy also the header descriptions;
• Special Copy – This one enables you to make a copy under a special layout, i.e., just the
table of figures (including titles) and not the header description;

2.2. User access level to BMW

BMW introduces the concept of User Hierarchy. This means that in BMW Users are grouped in
different categories: System Administrator (admin); Group Manager (Group) and Common User
according to their access level into the application (see chapter Options).

The System Administrator has full access to BMW features while Group Manager has less
access, but still controlling the access on a group and Common User is the basic level of usage.
Users have reading and writing rights just on user-level and by default have reading rights to
group/system and built-in levels;
It is System Administrator who registers users and defines their category and or level of access.
But there are also some BMW features that are pre-configured to work differently depending
on the category of the user that is accessing BMW. And this Hierarchy concept and
methodology is spread over all BMW modules.
One example of those features is the Templates environment window and the Templates
building functions.

8

BMW USER GUIDE

As the figure shows, all analysis queries have four different environment windows (User, Group,
System and Built In). Each one of them has different purposes:
User Window – This is the window where templates that will be available only for the User
should be placed in;
Group Window – This is the window where templates that will be available only for the Group
should be placed in;
System Window – This is the window where templates that will be available for All BMW Users
should be placed in.
Furthermore, the access level to each one of them will be different depending on the User’s
category. Let’s see those differences:
User Window – Common Users can build his own templates. Group Managers can do the same
and also “send” templates to all his Group members or to a specific User member. System
administrator can do the same and also “send” templates to a certain Group, to a specific User
or to all BMW users;
Group Window – Common Users that belongs to a Group can only run template and “send” it
to himself (make a copy into his User Window). Group Managers can build their own templates
and also “send” them to themselves. System Administrator can do the same as the Group
Manager and also “send” it to a specific User, to a specific Group or to all BMW Users;

9
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
System Window – Common Users (even those who don’t belong to any Group) can only run
template and “send” them to themselves (make copies into their User Window”. Group
Managers can do exactly the same. System Administrator can build templates and send them
to a specific User or Group.
Finally, depending on your User Category, BMW displays an “entering” menu that allows you
to enter the analysis query of a specific User as if you were that User. If you are a Common User
you will not have this “entry” menu available. If you are a Group Manager you will have a menu
listing all User members of your Group. If you are a System Administrator you will have a menu
listing all BMW Users.

Basically this menu enables an effective control and knowledge of what templates each User
is creating. So for example, when the System Administrator clicks on the menu he/she will see
all Users names and by selecting one of them he/she will be able to enter the analysis query as
if he was that User.

We have been referring to terms like “Build” and “Send” buttons that are available in all analysis
queries. Let’s now present a brief description of them:

Build button:

Create New Layout/Filter template;

Save the changes you have made in the selected Layout/Filter template;
Load the selected Layout/Filter template into the report definition query;
Rename Filter Template;
Delete the selected Layout/Filter template;
Delete All Layout/Filter templates.
Send button:

10
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
When clicking on this button BMW presents a list of all BMW Users (in the case you
are a System administrator) or of all Group members (in the case you are a Group Manager). So
you should be able to choose to which Users you want to send your template.

3. BMW Variables

BMW offers several variables that enable users to analyze TV audience data. There are two
types of variables, those related to Events and those related to Audience.
Besides the variables BMW offers by default, users can also make your own variables through
the User Variables Manager module.

3.1. Variables that are related to Events

• Bsh% – Broadcast Share. It is the rate between event duration and the channels
broadcast duration in that day.
Event Duration
Bsh%   100
Duration of a day broadcast of the channel

• Sat% – Saturation index. It is the rate between the duration of ad spots (breaks and auto
promotions) included within the program and the Total duration (duration of all
programs parts + duration of ad spots included in the program) Remember that you
can choose to see only Breaks or only Auto promotions, through the “Saturation Index”
option inside the analysis query.

Sat% = Ad Spot Duration X 100

Total Duration

3.2. Variables that are related to Audience

• Rat% – Average Audience rate. For its computation, each Household is weighted with
reference to the duration of the contact with the event/channel.

Rat% = Total minutes of an "Event" viewed across all Households (000s) x 100
"Event" duration x total household in the target audience (000s)

 Rch% – It measures the % of Household who “contacted” with the event/channel at

least 1 minute. Note that even if the individual had contact two or more times with the
same event/channel, it is considered just one contact.

Rch% = No of Household that contacted with the event at least 1 min X 100
Total Household

 Shr% – Audience Share for an event/channel. It is computed with the total time viewing
a determined event/channel with reference to the total time spent watching TV (Base
Channel).
Shr% = Rating (Rat%) of the Event X 100
Total TV Rating

 Ats (viewer) – Average time spent by the viewers of the event

Total minutes viewed by all viewers of the "Event"
Total number of viewers of the "Event"

 Ats (Univ) -- Average Time Spent on the "Event" by all Household in the Universe

Total minutes viewed by all viewers of the "Event"

Total number of Household in the Universe

 Atr% -- % of target households where any TV channel was on, averaged across minutes

Total of viewed minutes of TV x 100

Event duration x no. of Household of target

 Fid% – Fidelity index. It gives you the average % of a time period/program that is
contacted by each individual.

Ats #
Fid %   100
Event' s Duration

12
Powered by MARKDATA

Note: The maximum value of Fid% is 100% and it would mean that all contacted
Household (TV viewers) were present in the whole program/period.

 Aff% – Affinity index. It measures the “Affinity” of an event with a target, i.e.; compares
the target average audiences of an event with the base target average audience of that
event.
Rat% for the target event
Aff %   100
Rat% for the base target event

 Alp(idx) – Alpha coefficient.: Calculates relation between what the channel “gains” on
audience and “spends” on the events broadcast for that particular event within the
channel

Alp(idx) = ((Event’s Rat% X Event’s Dur)/Channel Rat% X 24hours) X100 X 100

(Event’s Dur/Dur of a day broadcast of the channel)X100

 Bet(IDX) – Beta coefficient. It measures the importance of an event/channel in the

audience of that channel.

Bet(idx) = Event/Channel Alp (idx) X 100

Total TV Alp (idx)

 Att% – Attractiveness Index. It measures an event/channel attractiveness for a certain

target, i.e., compares the target’s share with the base target’s share.

T arg et Shr %
Att %   100
Base target Shr %

 Rat’000 – Number of Household in 000s of a target audience who viewed an "Event",

averaged across minutes. Also known as TVT.
Rat’000 = Rat% x total Household in the target audience (000s)
100

 Rch’000 – Reach in thousand Household. Number of Household in ‘000 who viewed the
Event for at least 1 minute. Viewing based on attribution rules

Rch’000 = Rch% X No of Household that contacted with the event at least 1 min
100

13

 OTS – Opportunity To See. It gives you the average number of times a viewer is
contacted by the events in analysis1.
In other words, it gives you how many times the average person you reach will have an
opportunity to see that exposure.
Grp%
OTS 
Cov%

 Cov% – Coverage. It gives you the % of the target that contacted at least one of the
events in the set. Also known as cume reach %

 Cov’000 – Number of target households ('000s) in the universe where at least one of
the events in a set of events was on. Also known as Cume Reach in 000s

6. BMW Analysis mode

BMW displays three different types of Analysis mode: Insertions, Summary, Crosstab,

6.1. Insertions, Summary and Crosstabs

Insertions mode. This mode is used to show a complete set of information related with
Programs, Time Bands, Advertising or even with Programs and Advertising together. Channel,
Date, Hour, Length, Position in the break, number of insertions of the break, associated price,
expenditure, etc., are some of the available entities. It provides information about the
broadcasted Spots, Events (Programs, Breaks and auto promotions) and time bands for the
period analysed. It gives you a complete and flexible output in a table where you can filter
and organize the information in multiple ways. This mode shows every single insertion, so
depending on the amount of data to be analysed or if it is for a long period, like a full year,
it can produce a very long report.
Summary mode. The summary allows you to build a resume table containing just the total
values of the Organization items (selected rows) and not each individual insertion like the
insertion mode. It is a table with a summary of the information for the selected period.

26
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
Crosstab mode. The crosstab allows you to cross the information of several items you select in
a single table. In a Crosstab Analysis, you build a table that combines audience information
among the entities you have previously chosen for columns and rows.

These modes are part of the definition of the layout.

6.1.1. Insertions mode

The above figure is an example of an Insertions Output organized by Channel. This output
contains several Spots and Event insertions (Programs; Breaks). As you can see, it displays
chronologically the audience information for Programs, for the associated Breaks and even for
the spots that are included in that break.

6.1.1.1.
Other options available in the Layout:
All these options and their functionality are the following:

 Sort Insertions Ascending/Descending – It organizes results in an increasing/decreasing

order;
 Discard Duplicates – Delete the duplicated descriptions;
 Format – This option allows other options:
o Freeze columns/rows – Locks the selected columns or rows against changes but
it can be “unfreeze” whenever the user wants;

6.1.2.1. 5.1.2.1. How to configure Summary mode

You can configure your analysis output according to your own needs. If you click the right
mouse button over the table, one of these menus will open containing the following options

All these options and their functionality are the same as mentioned in the insertion analysis
mode.

 Insertions/Summary/Cross tab – To switch to another kind of analysis preserving the

standard layout, you can directly select it here instead of using the Layout option;

33
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 Flatten Nodes – On the Crosstab analysis, it allows you to display all organization items
without levels;
 Delete rows – Deletes the selected rows from the Report;
 Delete nodes – Deletes the selected nodes from the Report;
 Hide nodes - Hides the selected nodes (totals) from the Report; the difference
compared with “Delete nodes” is that when hiding nodes the Total of the Group to
which the node belongs is not recalculated (to exclude that node) because the node
was just hidden and not deleted.
 Save – This option is explained in the insertion analysis section
 Chart – Already explained
 Send to analysis –Already explained
 Behavioural Target – Already explained
 Create Entity – Sends the selected events to the Entity Manager container and this way
create a new entity.
Here, we have run a Report Analysis and have obtained the following Insertion Analysis:

To begin to create a new entity we must change the type of analysis to Summary or Crosstab.

34
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Now we create the new Entity selecting those variables that we are going to join to form the
new Entity and by right clicking with the mouse select the “Create Entity” option.

In this example we wanted to create a “New entity” joining together “Comedy Nights with Kapil”
and “Tarak Mehta” one single entity named “Comedy Programs”.

After inserting the name and choose Base Entities, click on “OK”. A new screen appears where
we have to enter the new description of the entity just created. We select “Add” or in this case
we have created a “New” entity: “Children Programme”.

35
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Therefore we have created this new entity that takes all insertions which correspond
to the description “Comedy Nights” and “Tarak Mehta” converted now into “Comedy Prog”,that
belongs to the new entity “Comedy Prog”.

Close the window and save the changes for the new typology “Typology Child”.

Let’s run a TV Program analysis with the entity “Typology Child” selected to check the results.

36

BMW USER GUIDE

As you see, in the column “Typology Child” refers to the new entity and it’s filled with “Children
Programs” for insertions that match all parameters (“Tarak Mehta” and “Chidiya Ghar” and
“Comedy Calsses”). For all other insertions it’s filled with “n.a.”

6.1.3. Crosstab Mode

This is a simple example of a Crosstab analysis. First row contains Channels, second row
contains Days. In columns we have audience information (rat% and shr%) organized first by
Time Periods, then by Targets.

5.1.3.1. How to configure Crosstab Mode

You can configure your analysis output according to your own needs. If you click the right
mouse button over the table, it will open a menu containing the following options

BMW USER GUIDE

The “Create Target” option allows creating a new target. It will open a small dialog where you
define the new target by creating a Copy of an existing Target, creating a new Demographic
target by selecting what segments should compose it or create a new target by Combing
existing targets (in an union or intersection relation).

45

After selecting your choice, click on the “Create” button. This figure shows how we created a
new Target. We have selected the segments Region - Chhattisgarh NCCS - A and Sex - Male
just by clicking over it:

 Then click on “Create” button to give a name Men and NCCS A, and an abbreviation
M+C1 for that new Target;
 Check the “System” box to include it in System Targets. If you opt not to do this then
the new target will be added on Local Targets;
 Marking the “Include Guests” check box to create the Target that includes Guests. This
option is available if it is included in the Database.

7.2.3. Combination

The “Combination” option allows creating Targets that result from Unions or
Intersections of several Targets which you had previously selected.

In this screen you must insert the name and the abbreviation for the new combination target.

The Heading Targets table is organized by:

 Demographic Targets – System;

 Demographic Targets – User;
 Behavioral Targets – System;
 Behavioral Targets – User;
 Cojoint Targets – System;
 Cojoint Targets – User;

47

NOTE: User can put them available only for User or for all the System users.

7.2.4. Set target definition

Select the target you created, right click where you will have the option “Set Composition”.
This will get you to the “Set Target definition” option where you can redefine the composition
of one target already created. It will open the following dialog box.

Now you can change these selections or add new ones. To confirm, click on the “Set” button.

48

BMW USER GUIDE
You can also define the weight that each composing item of the target will have.
By clicking the mouse right button on the item you will see a window where you can establish
the weight (in %).

7.2.5. Conjoint Target

This option enables you to create Targets of people “watching together with…” or “watching
alone” so in other words with this Targets it is possible to run a Report and check the Mutual-
Viewing audience and the Solo-Viewing audience. When clicking in this option the following
dialog opens

49
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

1 - List of Available Targets: Lists all targets available in the database, from where you’ll select
the ones you want to use.
2 – Base Target: You must place here the Target for which you’re going to analyze the
audience, in this example we put “Female”
3 – Viewing with: You must place the Target or Targets (if more than one they will relate to
each other as OR condition) with whom the Base target has to see together (mutual) or alone
(solo) in a Household, in this example we put “children”
4 – Criteria: You must choose the viewing criteria. You can choose operators such as
>,<,>=,>=,= and number of Household between 0 and 4. Let’s explain some examples:
=0, means Female people who sees with 0 Children, so in other words Female people who
didn’t see together with any Children, so it is a SoloView of Female = 1, means Female people
who sees together with exactly 1 Children, so it is a
Mutual View of Female with 1 Children
>=1, means Female people who sees together with at least 1 Children, so it is a Mutual View
of Female with 1 or more Children.
5 – “Same TV SET”: If you just consider a Mutual View as valid if he has occurred in the same
TV SET of the Household
6 – “Statement”:

50
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
If you check it then it will consider Mutual View as only the time that Female and Children
saw together in the household, so in other words it gives the mutual audience of Female with
Children.
If you don’t check it then it will give the whole audience of Female people (so not just the
mutual part) that have seen the event that was also seen by
Children (even if it is not at the same time).

After creating the Target you should save it:

In the Preview you can verify the formula condition used to create that Target. In this
example it was created the Target made of “Female watching together with at least one
children”

Then as usual this Target will become available in the list of target of each Analysis query and
can be selected for obtaining the respective audience.

7.3. Channels manager

 Visible – This option will allow activating or deactivating the channel. All the channels
in the table are taken into account for the share computation. If a channel is (or not)
active only informs us if it’s available or not in an analysis;
 Has Events – Sign those channels that are available for the events analysis, i.e., for the
Reports and Grid Analysis;
 Reference – Will inform TeleReport that the created channel must be considered as a
base channel;
 Url – You can associate a Url to a channel who takes you, for example, to the home
page of that channel.

You can also create Virtual Channels from the available ones. Select the channels you want to
use and click over the selection with the mouse right button, then select the option “Create

7.4. Distribution Curve manager

This option is explained in “Individual Analysis” option. To see more details please go to
Distribution Curve.

7.5. User variables manager

User Variables Manager is, in fact, a Variable’s Creator, meaning that any User will have the
freedom to build their own variables based on a set of standard variables presented by BMW.

55
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Clicking on the “Add” button this screen is displayed. On the first blank space write the
variable name and click the arrow on the second blank, a list of variables (Vars), Totals and
operations symbols (Ops) will appear which the User will use to build the formula by which
the new variable shall be calculated. Example below shows how User Variable CPR (Cost Per
Rating) was created.

56
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

After creating the variable formula to calculate the insertion it is also possible to define how
the Total of such variable should be calculated. The available options for
Total type are:
 Default –Means the Total will be calculated as the insertion formula;
 Sum;
 Average;
 Average (Validated);
 Accumulate;
 Accumulate by group.

Finally click on “OK” and the new variable will be saved and ready to be used in any analysis.

The variables in Bold mean that were created by any Users (as well variables in the
System).

Like it happens for the system variables you can also define what Total Type to be used for
the User Variable when it offers more than 1 option. And you can run simultaneously
different Totals for the same variable, by adding the variable as many times as the different
number of Totals to be displayed.

7.6. Entity manager

Entity Manager is another original tool provided by BMW. Through the Entity
Manager the User is able to create his own entities. He can create his entity by combining
BMW default entities. So, if a User would like to use a specific entity that is not included in
BMW default entities he can create it by himself. After creating it, this new entity will be
available for selection in the Reports Designer layout. Let’s see an example to better
understand this concept.

To create a New Entity, select the option “Entity Manager” from Utilities menu

59

Depending on which Media you choose, it will appear the correspondents’ variables in the
left box. User just has to choose variable and click on its name, making the same if wants do
unselect any variable already selected.

If you choose, for example, media type “TV Advertising”, once you have created your entity
then it will be available for selection in Layout of “TV Advertising” from Report Designer.

7.6.2. Defining the Entity variables

Here we have the following screen where the different variables, which make up the created
new entity, can be defined: “SubBrand” and “Brand” and also the name to this new entity

Here we select the SubBrand and the Brand that are going to confirm our new entity. After
this, we write the name of our entity inside the field “new description”.
Double click over the respective variable name and will be displayed where we can search
and select what we want to include inside this variable. It displays a list of all parameters
available for the entity you have double clicked on. You can search for the parameters by
using the “LookUp” button ( ). After selection click “OK”.

Finally, you have another checkbox in this window called “Use Date Systems Settings”. When
this box is checked the BMW will use the settings set in the computer and applies them to
the output of the analysis as well as to the exported Excel documents.

8.1.3.1. Date

In the following example we have selected the DATE FORMAT tab with those parameters and
we have also included a word and some punctuation marks, let us detail how we have done
this. First we clicked on the New button and introduce #d, #m, and #y parameters in the box.

After that, we included the word “Date”, one colon “:”, one space and the punctuation mark
“/” among the parameters and finally clicked on the “OK” button to make this new date
format available.

8.1.3.2. Time

72

 Precision – This is to apply the same number of decimal cases to each variable;
 Decimal Separator – This is to apply a specific number’s separator (comma, point,
etc.);
 Digit Grouping Symbol – Allows re-establish the default setting.

Both of them are complementary so it is possible to define some decimal cases for one or
more variables and other decimal cases for the rest.

8.1.3.4. Variables Precision

In this option, User can define the Variables Precision, i.e., the number of decimal cases for
each variable. By default, all variables have two decimal cases.

74
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

In order to do that, you must first select the variables and then increase/decrease decimal
cases.

8.1.4. Export

This option allows defining the option for exports of BMW analysis and reports.

BMW USER GUIDE

9.1. Individual

Individual Analysis will enable you to make specific analysis for an event/time period or group
of events/time periods. Each individual analysis gives you different information about the
audience for an event/time period. The common characteristics of each individual analysis
are:

 Base query – Here you should select the Analysis, Targets, Regions and contacts
distribution;
 Settings – You may specify format values, Base Target, Base Channel, BTTV (Base TV
Viewer) and some other parameters for each Analysis;
 TV Viewer – Where you define a minimum condition to consider an Individual as being
a TV Viewer or Spectator;
 Layout – Where you select and organize the variables with which you want to define
the analysis.

82
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
You can make Household Analysis simultaneously for a given event/period or group of
events/periods.
To start an Individual Analysis, you must select the Individual option on the Analysis
Menu or through shortcut.

You can make Individual Analysis simultaneously for a given event/period or group of
events/periods.
To start an Individual Analysis, you must select the Individual option on the Analysis Menu or
through Shortcut bar.

9.1.1. Add Events into Individual Analysis

BMW offers three different methods of adding those events:

 By direct export from an Insertions, Crosstab or Summary analysis. Run a Programs

report, a Time Band report or an Advertising report, select a range of results you want
to analyse better; right-click with you mouse and from the menu choose ‘send to…’
individual analysis. This set of data will be analysed in the individual analysis.
 By loading .evt files previously saved. To do that you just need to select the option
“Load” or “Include”.

83
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 By Adding events that you will select according to some characteristics you think to be
relevant. So you could select Channels, Days and define several Time Periods.
Furthermore you can distinguish between those Bands by colors. For example, blue for
Programs, grey for Time Bands, red for Breaks, green for Auto-Promotions and so on.

Please pay special attention to the fact that the “H” field can be edited manually.
After defining all parameters, click the OK button and those items will be inserted in “Events”
window as the follow picture shows.

84
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

To configure the Events window, just click the right mouse button and you have several
available options as the figure shows. Let’s summarize them:

 Redefine – To change Base Query, Settings, TW Query or Layout;

 Export – To export database to an Excel file or a Txt file;
 Open With – To open output in Excel format;
 Add – To add items to analysis;
 Edit – to edit the event description
 Dates - Helps us change the dates without actually going to the edit option. It also gives
the option of shifting the dates by n no of days forward or backward
 Set time/duration – helps to change the start time/end time with the help of this
shortcut.
 Delete – Delete only the selected item;
 Info – Show Info;
 Create Support – Treats a group of insertions as a unique support (Macro-Event or
Average Support). Viewer conditions are applied to the support rather than to each
insertion of it;
The "Average Support" or "Macro-Event" provides an easy answer to questions, such
as:

 How many people viewed 50% of a Campaign;

 How many people saw at least 1 hour of “program” episodes, this week;
 How duplicated or exclusive is the audience between N campaign

85
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

So let's create the Macro Event of all episodes in time band "20:00-20:30" for Colors
and for all of episodes in time band "20:00-20:30" for Star Plus

After defining this run some analyses like, for example, R&F. So we can see that 0.58%
people saw at least 50% of all week episodes in 20:00-20:30 Time band on Colors. And
1.06% people saw at least 50% of all week episodes in 19:00-19:30 Time band on Star
Plus.

And if we run a Duplication analysis, these are the results: 32% of people that saw at
least 50% of total week episodes in 20:00-20:30 Time band on Colors also saw
episodes in 19:00-19:30 Time band on Star Plus.

 Split Support – To Split created Supports;

86
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 Load/Include – To load/include a previously saved *.evt file;

Some of these options are common to all Individual Analysis.

9.1.2. Base Query

The first window that opens is the Base Query window. Here you must select the kind of
analysis to be made as well as the Regions and Targets. When you position the mouse cursor
appears an options bar to help you make the selections:
Short items descending;
Short items ascending;
Reset default order;
Select all items;
Clear selections.
The “Events” dialog allows you to “Load” an events file into the analysis, by typing the path or
browsing on your computer.

9.1.3. Settings

Select the Settings option by clicking on the button, in order to define the parameters
of each selected analysis.

9.1.3.1. General - Events

Inside the “General” window you can choose the Base Target, the Base Channel, the BTVV
(Base TV Viewer), the method for calculating the Average and the calculation Algorithm
Method (Standard or Spots) you want to apply to all analysis.

87
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

In the Settings window you can also set the parameters for each one of the selected
individual analysis.
You also have a “MultiPanels” check box, which allows you to perform an analysis for more
than one panel. Furthermore, there also some settings those are specific to some analysis.
After choosing parameters, the first window appears with the chosen values.

9.1.3.2. R&F – Reach and Frequency

The “R&F” (Reach and Frequency) window allows you to set the limit number of contacts
distribution that you want to see in the R&F analysis.

You can create a new curve, save it or load an existing one

88
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The Reach & Frequency analysis gives you for each target the following variables: coverage
(cov%), reach (rch%), rating (rat%), grx% (accumulated rch%), grp% (accumulated rat%),
average number of contacts (ots#) and contacts distribution for a group of events.
In the following example you have the Reach and Frequency (R&F) analysis for some selected
Events organized by Channel. This way you get the audience values (Rat% included) and
contact distribution for each Organization item. The following figure shows the result of a
Reach & Frequency analysis, for the targets “Universe” organized by Channels.

Let’s review Colors results. In this example, you can see that at the end of these 3 emissions
for the time band “20:00-20:30”, each Household of the target “Universe” saw this program
in average 2.18 times (OTS). You can also read that there was 17.79% contacts (Grx% or
accumulated rch%), and 8.15% of this target saw at least one of these 3 programs (Cov%). In
the third emission of the program 3.92% of the Household of the target “Universe” have
contacted with it (Rch%). At the end of the 3rd emission 3.28% contacted one of these
programs, 2.04% contacted two and 1.36% contacted with all 3 programs. Also the rat% of
the 3rd emission was 0.52% and at the end of this emission the GRP% (accumulated rat%)
was 2.97%.

9.1.3.3. Loyalty
The “Loyalty” window has the same functionality as the previous one, but regarding the
Loyalty analysis.

89
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Loyalty analysis for each Target gives you the average number of contacts (OTS), GRP, total
number of contacts and total contact distribution for a group of events.
As the image confirms, you can also organize that group of events. In this case we keep the
organization by Channels.

In this example for Colors, each Household of the target “Universe” contacted in average OTS
1.83 with the events. Next to this value we may see that there were 12.24% contacts (Grx%
or accumulated rch%). In the total, Grp, 1.61% of the Household contacted with the events:
3.05% of the Household had just 1 contact, 1.75% had 2 contacts and 1.89% had 3 contacts.
By clicking with the right mouse button you may set the common options which we have
already explained.

9.1.3.4. SMH – Small Medium Heavy

90
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
The “SMH” window allows the User to define the Rank size by selecting one of the default
classes.

Individual distribution for each target ordered by ranks (having the same number of sample
Household) taking into account the % of average time viewing for the total of events. This
means that Household are grouped by atv# values from the household with the lowest atv#
to the Household with the highest atv#.
By default, each rank contains 5% of the sample Household in all the events in the analysis
(from the 5% with the lowest atv# to the 5% with the highest atv#), but you can define the
range of ranks in Settings-SMH (Household Analysis query).
In the following example, a range rank of 20% was defined for the sample Household. If you
want to change the range rank, just click the right mouse button over the Table and choose
the Settings option.

91
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The column 0% includes all Household that did not contact the events (with atv# =0). Let’s
analyze Colors values. For the Household of the target “Universe” that have contacted with
the events, those 20% that contacted less, have contacted an average of 2min 5seconds
(atv#), with a minimum of 1 Min and a maximum of 5 minutes. The respective standard
deviation is 1 min 14 seconds (StaDev). This rank represents 2.637 thousand Household of the
Universe. The “Total” column includes all Household, even that did not contact with the
events.
You can redefine the Rank’s scale and choose one of the predefined values (5%, 10%, 20%,
25%, 33%, 50%, 100%), just by clicking the right mouse button over the Table and choose the
Settings option.

9.1.3.5. Assiduity
The “Assiduity” window has the same functionality as the previous one, but referred to
Assiduity analysis.

92
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

This option displays the Average Time Viewing (ATV#) distribution by ranks of percentage of
event duration.
The Assiduity Analysis groups the Household for each target by viewed percentage of the
event’s duration. It also presents the minimum value (min) and maximum (max) of each rank
and the standard deviation value (Stddev) for the distribution.
By default, each rank contains those Household that contacted with 5% of the duration of all
events in the analysis but you can define the range of the ranks (Household Settings – ASS).
In the following example, a range 10% rank of events duration was defined. For instance
2.587 thousands Household of Target “Universe” saw between 10% and 20% of event
duration from Colors. The Weight line gives the thousands Household that belong to each
rank.

93
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
Let’s analyse for example Colors results. In this example, 12.005 thousand of the target
“Universo” contacted with the event from 0 to 10% of the total duration (sum of all events
duration). They contacted in average 34 minutes and 50 seconds, with a minimum viewing
time of 1 minute and a maximum of 1 hour 48 minutes. The distribution Standard Deviation
was 31 minutes and 52 seconds.
The options available using the right mouse bottom has been already explained.

9.1.3.6. DIS – Distribution

The “DIS” window allows the User to insert defined classes. By clicking on the “Add” button, a
new window is opened where we may insert the minimum and the maximum thresholds of
each defined class.

It complements the Assiduity analysis. The main purpose is the same; it measures the time
viewing of each Household and groups them in classes. But here those duration classes can
be set in minutes and not in percentage as it is in Assiduity.

94
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

This analysis offers complementary data from the other ones, so now the user can obtain the
time viewing of each Household by grouping them in classes for every channel.
This example shows for Colors the following values. There were 16.355 thousand of
Household from the target “Universe”. The Atv#, average time of viewing, is 1 hour 26
minutes and 20 seconds, the minimum time of viewing (Min) is 1 minute and the maximum
time of viewing (Max) is 10 hours 36 minutes. Finally the Standard deviation (StaDev) is 1 hour
46 minutes and 52 seconds.

1.1.1.1.1 Creating Behavioral Targets

Behavioral Targets are created by combining cells. The User is able to create behaviour targets
based on those cells; this means BMW will create targets composed by those Household that
has a certain behaviour described by those cells. All behavioural targets that you create will
be then automatically added into the Targets window.
There are three methods of creating Behavioral Targets:

 Create Target – Every time you only select one single cell;
Creating a Simple Target based on that cell will include all Household who performed the
behaviour represented by the cell. This means all Household who watched one of the 3
channels during the period 19:00-21:00 on day either of the dates.

Behavioural Union and Intersection.

It is only possible to build a behavioural Intersection or behavioural Union target from constant
panel audience variable results. This means that the base-analysis, the one from which data
will be used, has to include at least one (can include more) constant panel variable in the report
layout.
 Create Target by Union (if you select more than one cell) – All Household present in
those cells, excluding of course duplications, will compose the target.
Creating a Union Target based on those two cells will include all Household who performed at
least one of the cells, this means all Household who watched between 0-20% of events
duration or between 20-40% of events duration.

95
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 Create Target by Intersection (if you select more than one cell) – The target will consider
only Household that are present in all selected cells.
Creating an Intersection Target based on those 2 cells will include Household that
belong to the same time band, simultaneously and performed the behavior
represented by cells; in this case those who watched Colors on the given dates.

The results appear on the end of the analysis page, as we can see in the following window.

9.1.3.7. DUP – Duplication

This analysis displays the Audience duplication between two (or more) different events. This
analysis presents for each Target the percentage of Household present in the events in
column that were also present in the audience of the event in line.
The result of a Duplication analysis for the targets “Universe” organized by Channel is similar
to the one presented in the following figure.

96
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

This analysis presents the percentage of audience present in the events column that is also
present in the audience of the event in line.
From those that were present on the first event (column 1#) 42.00% were also present on
the second event and 41.86% on the third. From those that were present on the second
event (column 2#) 37.00% were also present on the third event.
The Oth line (Others) gives you the percentage of Household that had contacted with the
event in column and had also contacted with at least one of the other events. In this example,
78.56% of the audience of the Event 1 have also contacted with at least one of the other two
events. The Rch line (Reach) gives you the percentage of Household of the target that had
contacted the event in column. So 3.28% is the rch% of Event 1.
As usual this analysis allows multiple options as we have explained before by only right
clicking over the output.

9.1.3.8. Exclusivity Reach

As the name suggests, it displays the exclusive reach of each event. In other words it presents
for each Target the percentage of Household present in the event’s column that were not
present in the audience of the event in line. So it gives us the opposite results from
Duplication analysis.

Let’s analyze Channel Star Plus events. In this example, from the Household of the target
“Universe” that were present on the first event, 57.90% were not present on the second
event and 58.00% were not present on the third.
The Oth line (Others) gives you the percentage of Household that had contacted with the
event in column, but were not present in any other events. In this example, from the
Household of the target “Universe” that had contacted with the first event, 21.44% were not
present in any of the other two events.

97
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
The Rch line (Reach) gives you the percentage of Household of the target that had contacted
with the event in column (exactly the same as in Duplication analysis). In this example 3.26%
had contacted with the first event.

9.1.3.9. Exclusivity Index

It measures the exclusivity level of an event by comparing its exclusive reach (Household
present in that event and not in other ones) with its duplication (Household present it that
event and also in other ones).

Exclusive _ reach
Exclusivity _ Index 
Duplication

The Exclusivity Index is greater than 100% when the exclusivity of the event in column is
higher than its duplication when compared with the event in line, and smaller than 100%
when the duplication of the event in column is greater when compared with the event in line.

In this example, for the target “Universe” for the 3rd event (column 3#) of Colors, the
audience was more exclusive than duplicated when comparing it with the 5th event. For
instance you can see that the third event “18:00-24:00” of Colors has an Exclusivity Index of
408.00 when comparing to the 2nd event in line “1900-2100” of Zee TV
The Oth line (Others) can be interpreted as the proportion of Household that are exclusively
present on the event in column compared with those who are duplicated on at least one of
the other nine events. In this example the 2nd event has 23.52%.
The Rch line (Reach) gives you the reach values for each event (in column) individually
(exactly the same as in Duplication analysis). In this example the 2nd event has a 2.27%.
As always there are the same options by right clicking the mouse.

9.1.3.10. Dem – Demographics

The “Dem” analysis window allows choosing the demographics, targets and variables you wish
to use in order to get the audience Profile in the “Demographics” analysis.

98
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The output of a Demographic analysis, for the Base target “Universe”, targets “NCCS B” and
“NCCS D/E” and for rat% and rch% variables is similar to the following:

In this example, the average rat% value for the time band on Star Plus was 2.10% for the
target “Universe”, for the target “NCCS B” was 3.8%, and so on.
This analysis gives you also the values for the Min (Minimum), Max (Maximum), Avr (Average)
and StdDev (Standard Deviation) for the correspondent audience variables in each target.

9.1.3.11. Avr – Average

The Average Analysis allows the user to get any audience indicator in the competing channels,
during the broadcast of the events in analysis.

99
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Therefore, you will be able to know all audience variables for any channel during the
broadcast, of one or more events, for any channel (not necessarily included in the
selected/analyzed channels).

The above example is the result of an average analysis for the base target “Universe”, targets
”NCCS A”, “B”, “C” and “D/E”, channels “Colors”, “Star Plus” and “Zee TV”, and for variables
rat%, shr%, rch%.
The Audience column is very useful because it points out the values of the respective
Channel\event that is showed in the row.

100
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
9.1.3.12. DEP – Destination and Provenience
The “DEP” window allows you to select the channels you wish to analyze in the “Destination
and Provenience” analysis.

The Departure analysis measures Destination and Provenance of an event’s audience. So it

gives you the audience migration between different events and channels. This analysis can
have different interpretations for the same set of events, depending on the TV Viewer
definition.
For the following example, we defined for TV Viewer (Individual Threshold) as any individual
that has contacted with the event at least with 50% of its duration. With this definition the
Household cannot belong to the audience in more than one channel at the same time. The
result of this analysis will be:

The Total TV column gives you the percentage of Household that had the TV on during the
broadcast of the event in line. It includes those Household that were watching any channel

101
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
and also those who were zapping through the channels, ever since they were 50% (according
to the TV Viewer definition) of the event’s duration with the TV on.
The columns having the Channel name gives you the % of Household that were watching that
channel during the event broadcast in line. In Zapping you will have the % of Household that
were less than 50% (according to the TV Viewer definition) of the time of the event duration
contacting with a channel or with TV on/off. The TV Off column gives you the percentage of
Household that had the TV off during the broadcast of event presented in line (according to
the TV Viewer definition we have selected).
In the previous example, from those Household who saw the time band 1800-2400 from Star
Plus, 55.62% remained with the TV on during at least 50% of the time band 1800-2400 on
Colors. From those Household, 17.10% switched out for Star Plus, 1.06% switched for Zee TV,
0.53% stayed on Colors, 17.09% were zapping3, and 27.29% turned off the TV.

9.1.4. TV Viewer Query

TV Viewer definition is very important because it works as the basis for the majority of the
analysis4 you are going to do.

To define the TV Viewer, click on the button and BMW will open a dialog box like the
following one, where you can select the concept of TV Viewer.

There is a default TV Viewer definition; however, you can perfectly change this definition
according to your own needs.
You can define TV Viewer as someone seeing x seconds or at least some percentage of the
event’s duration, consecutive or not by simply activating their respective check box.

3 Zapping is all people that despite were watching TV, weren’t present at any Channel in at least 50%
4 R&F, Loyalty, Duplication, Exclusivity Reach and Exclusivity Index.

102
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
In “Localized Threshold” you can select how many minutes the individual must see of the
event “Before”, “Beginning”, “Middle”, “End” or “After” an event to be considered a TV
Viewer.
In “Pointed Threshold”, you can select how many seconds must an Household see in a certain
percentage of the event’s duration to be considered a TV Viewer. Select the second’s number
in “For (sec)” option and the percentage in the “Start” box. By selecting all these options
simultaneously, BMW will consider a TV Viewer all Household that gather simultaneously the
selected conditions.
When you finally have selected all variables you want to analyze, click OK and BMW will
immediately open the Individual Analysis window.
Now the first step is to choose which Events and/or Time Periods you want to paste into the
“Events” screen in order to study it.

9.1.5. Layout
Here you can choose the appearance of the outputs and which variables are visible in outputs
results.

If you want to remove some items from the columns/lines, just drag and drop them into the
left side. You can do the same thing but in reverse, i.e., drag from the left side and drop into
the place you want. Pay attention to the symbol colors, right next the variables. The light blue
means you just can drop them in line, the dark blue that you can drop them in column and if
variables have two colors that means you can drop them in column and/or line.

10. Audview > Program Report

103
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

BMW enables you to build one or several planning scenarios according to your own needs.
Audview > Programme Report & Time Band report is a special component where the User
can select a layout and a set of filters to generate an analysis, through a wide range of
schedules and graphics. This way you are not restricted to pre-defined layouts with little
flexibility.
Furthermore, BMW is capable of working with different media types: Time Bands & TV
Programs
When you want to build a Plan you must follow three important steps:

 Select Media Type;

 Select Layout/Filters Templates;
 Select Dates.

10.1. Selecting Media Type

When you open BMW, you have to click on Shortcut bar > Program Report options. You can
also select it from analysis menu > Reports > Program Report

104
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

It opens the Media box where you have to choose which type of events you want to study in
your Plan: TV Advertising, TV Programs, TV Programs and Advertising, Time Bands.
For the very first time you have the possibility to combine spots, breaks and programs all
together in one single Schedule. Then, you just have to click on the “Next” bottom to
continue building your Plan.

10.1.1. Selecting Templates: Layouts and Filters

The Layout definition box allows you to organize data through Layouts and to specify even
more your analysis, using the Filter options.
After defining your Layout and Filters you can run the analysis (Insertions; CrossTab;
Summary) and even add it into the Reports menu.

10.1.1.1. Building your Layout

The Layout option allows you to organize the header of your Plan.

105
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

First, you must decide which kind of analysis you want to make: Insertions, Summary or
Crosstab which is described at the start of the document. Then, you have to choose the items
of Entities, Variables and Audience Variables that you want to include in your Template, by
dragging them to the new location, i.e., to the topside or to the left side of Screen, depending
on your needs. You can now drag several items at the same time, using the Ctrl or Shift keys.
To take them out of the report you just need to double-click on them and the entities that are
already displayed in the Layout appear in red in the list of selection.

Of course the available items will depend on the Media Type you have previously selected:

 The Entities placed on the topside of Screen will be displayed in columns (“StartTime”,
“EndTime”, “rat%” and “shr%”);
 The Entities placed on the left side will be displayed as rows. Each row corresponds to
an Organization item (“Date”);
 The Entities placed at the bottom (“Channel”) will be displayed as Tabs.

Also on the top part of the Layout definition screen there are several other options:

 Analysis mode:
o Insertions;
o Summary;
o Crosstab.
 Events:

106
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
o Discard Events – An option used in the Summary analysis to optimizes
calculation. It is faster because it doesn’t keep in memory the insertions after
calculating them and therefore this option can only be used in
Summary/Crosstab modes;
o First insertions – Place the number of insertions to be displayed on the analysis
output according to the defined sort (example: the 5 Insertions with the highest
shr%).
o Last insertions - Place the number of insertions to be displayed on the analysis
output according to the defined sort (example: the 5 Insertions with the lowest
shr%).
 Nodes:
o First Nodes – Place the number of nodes (totals) to be displayed on the analysis
output according to the defined sort (example: the 5 Nodes with the highest
shr%).
o Last Nodes - Place the number of nodes (totals) to be displayed on the analysis
output according to the defined sort (example: the 5 nodes with the lowest
shr%)

 Summary/Crosstab:
o Flatten nodes – To display all organization items without levels and therefore
each organization level is treated as a separated column that users can then
sort on, for example;

o Merge flat nodes – It merges the columns which has repetitive entry

107
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 Extra:
o Totals on Top – An alternative way to display the total lines of each organization
group. By default they are displayed at the bottom of each group, with this
option they will be displayed at the top of each group.

Also on the bottom part of the Layout definition screen there are other options:

 Totals – For each variable the total value of each group of insertions can be calculated
in different ways, as an average, as a sum, and that is set here. The available total types
may differ from variable to variable.
 Node Totals – For each variable the total value of each node can be calculated based
on the results of the nodes below and according to the calculation type (sum, average,
etc) here selected.

Let’s see the following example of a Report built using different Totals and Node Totals for
several variables.

108
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Here we have selected variable Rat% twice, one with Total Insertions “sum” and another with
“average”. Also Rch% and Cov. Finally Shr%. And the result is the one displayed below:

So for example 23.30% is the total grp’s obtained in day 25.03.2015. And 0.24% is the
averaged Rch% obtained in each day (node).

 Sort Insertions
 Sort Nodes
 Visible – In some occasions the columns must be present in the Layout, however you
don’t want to see it in the output. In such cases you can hide that column by turning-
off this option.

 Activate multipage enhanced grouping – Enhanced Grouping is a new BMW feature to
run multi-reports at the same time, sharing the same set of filters but with different
layouts. It can be very useful and provide a broader view of analysis if you would like to
compare reports changing one or more variables, entities, building different
organizations, etc.

It works by creating Groups in the report. Each time you add a group you can redefine its
layout differently from one another. When you activate multipage enhance grouping, you
have the option to Add a Group, Remove a Group or Reset all the Groups.

You can also choose to use a common base definition for all groups (if the only thing you want
to distinguish from Groups is the layout organization) or, on the other hand, you can have
different groups with different base definitions.

110

BMW USER GUIDE

Once you finished defining the Layout and Filters and you run the Report, you will have the
possibility to toggle between the several groups in the Report, clicking on each tab.

10.1.1.2. Adding colors and Graphs

 You can add colors to the text/numbers in the layout to make it more readable and
ready to use for presentations.

Add button highlighted helps to define the color specification along with the
row/column/cells to be highlighted. Based on the variable & operation chosen, the
cells/rows/columns gets highlighted. See in the example below:

111

BMW USER GUIDE

The final result will look something like this.

 Adding Graphs to the layout – This helps us define the options for adding graph to the
layout along with the text or only Graph.

BMW USER GUIDE

So, for obtaining text + graph layout, we choose the option and define the color. See the
example below

10.1.2. Choosing the filters

 Base Query – Here you can select the targets/regions and channels.

113

BMW USER GUIDE

 Audience Min/Max – We can set the min & max limits for the audience variable
chosen with the help of this filter. When you click on add the following dialoge box
opens up where u can choose the variable, region and target and define the
operation(>, <, >=) based on the value or you can compare one variable in
comparison with the other and disply only the events which fulfils the criteria.

In the example below, we have selected to show rch% for India for target Universe which is
lesser than or equal to Shr% for India for target universe and everything that doesn’t match
the criteria is not displayed in the final output.

BMW USER GUIDE

10.1.2.1. Nodes Min\Max

Like the well-known filter “Audience Min\Max” this filter operates the same way but working
over Total results and not over Insertion results as the “Audience Min\Max” does. So in other
words the Nodes Min\Max can be used in order to reject\accept the Total results that are
bigger\smaller than the value defined. Because there can be in a report different
Organization groups and therefore different Total levels the filter offers the possibility to
define the filter for a specific Organization group only. For example in image below we
decided to filter on Total results of the Organization group “Description”

And this way only the Description with Rat% sum which were higher than 1 will be shown in
the output.

115

BMW USER GUIDE
 Program – Here you can choose your programme levels; Program/Break &
Autopromotion.
o Type - If only programme is chosen, the report will show only programme
related information without any break or Promo (channel promo/tag
promo/program promo)
o Level – Levels defines the father programme and the segments that comprises
of it. Level 1: helps us get the entire programme/break and promos as a single
row instead of breaking it up in segments. Level 2- divides the program &
break in segments depending upon how it is aired. Level 3: If there is any filler
or content which is not part of the programme or breaks/promotion, it is
further divided into segments to detail the same.
o Typologies – Helps you select the programme genre in case you want the
report to pick up specific Genre

o Names - This filter Names, used in Programs reports, allows the user to search for a
program(s) through its name. Like the program filter, it looks for programs but it works
in a simpler way.
The most simple and quick way to add a program’s name to the filter is using the button Add.
Click on ‘Add’ and it will open a field where you can write the name of the program you want.

If you do not know the complete or correct name or you want to look for every program
that contains a given name or expression, write the name you want and tick the box
‘Accept/Rejected’ (checked=accepted/unchecked=rejected). BMW will search for any
program that has that particular name in it.

116
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
Every time you add, change or remove names/expressions with the buttons ‘Add’, ‘Edit’ or
‘Delete’ (or ‘Remove All’) and then run the analysis, BMW5 makes a new database search.
Below is an example of a report program where we used the Name filter set as shown in the
figure above. It has a lineup of events that contain ‘Tevar’ in its name), done for a 5-day
period.

There are two advanced ways of searching for a program with this filter, using the XLookUp
function or the LookUP function. Even if you can use them for the same purpose and have
similar interfaces, the options have a basic difference: while the LookUp function searches the
database every time the user searches for a program by name, the XLookUp (Express LookUp)
pre-loads a database for a given period and then the user can do as many searches as needed.
The first option is more accurate, the second is faster.

Lookup Button: When you click on the LookUp button, it will open the date window wherein
you need to choose the period. Post which we are given the option to choose the programme
based on the channel selected.

117
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The programmes with matching name will appear in the middle area.

In our example we are searching for programme “Swarangini”. The filetr automatically shows
the programmes with matching names.
The screen shows Five columns of options users can check for each program:
 S. Select (=checked)/ Unselect (=unchecked)
 D. Use Dates. BMW will link the program to the date(s) (that is identified in the same
line); it selects that program for that date only;
 C.. Use channels; if you check this box, BMW will link the program to the channel (that is
identified in the same line) meaning that it selects that program for that channel only
 T. Use Time Slots. BMW will link the program to the time slot (that is identified in the
same line); it selects the program for that time slot date only;
 R. Reject (=checked)/ Accept (=unchecked).
Select the programs you want (highlights in the figure above) and click Add&Close if you are
done; click Add if you need to do more searches
Once you finish adding programs or names close the window. BMW adds the selections to
the Names filter with all the conditions specified.
You can also see that the Names filter in the parameters tree already has the programs
names.

You Names filter is ready to use. Below is an example of a report program where we used
these Name filter settings. The figure shows a ranking of programs with the events we chose
with the names filter

 User Entities – It is defined in the Tools > User Entites part of the manual.Thise
entries created can be dragged and dropped in the filter menu
 Curve – Explained in the Tools > Distribution Curve manual
 Time Slot – We can select the time slots we want our report to run on on hourly basis
and even if we want to further divide it on 15min level, it is possible.
 Time length – We can create several time bands with the help of this filter
 Time Band – It actually helps us to split our time band in equal intervals. For ex: If we
want to run a report which requires us to see channel GRP at 30 minute level.

12. Other Audview Analysis

12.1. Grid Analysis:
BMW offers a large flexibility to achieve the most demanding Grids that a User may need to
build. You can build simple or complex Grids, it all depends on the definitions you set.

BMW offers two different kinds of Grid analysis:

 Grid – Grid analysis displays daily audience curves and complements it with the
corresponding program’s table. So you are able to graphically compare audience curve
evolution for any entity (Channel, Target, Region, Days and so on), always together with
a program’s table for the selected Channels. Grid is capable of building several daily
curves together, one for each entity (Channel, Target, etc.), for any audience variables
and complements it with the corresponding program’s grid. Furthermore, the User has
flexibility to redefine the Grid’s layout and improve its appearance, as we will see next.

 Classic Grid – The Classic Grid builds a table, split in time slots of 15 minutes, with the
daily audience values for each program and also for each time slot.

12.1.1. How to build a Grid analysis

To build a Grid Analysis, you just have to select the Grid option from the Graphic Modules Menu.
It will open a query like the following figure where you must define “Base Query”, “Layout”,
“Settings” and “Band”.

121
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

12.1.1.1. Base Query

Select Regions, Channels, Targets, Program variables and Audience variables, Base Channel,
Reference Target and Programs Filter. You can also select an existing template from the list on
the top. You have the usual options to create, save and edit the templates.

The Programs Filter is a very useful option. By using it, the User is able to restrict the Grid
information only to a specific Event’s type and level25, as the figure shows.

122
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
12.1.1.2. Layout

The User has some flexibility to define Grid’s layout that best fits his needs. The User can define
the Grid Layout only just selecting the item that it will be changed, a window is opened on the
right corner where the user can choose the new item, and only by clicking on it BMW replaces
the entity with other one automatically.

It is also possible to define the colors of the Empty Area of the Program Area and to First
Variable Fill.

If you select to work with a “User defined layout”, you will find several options to reconfigure
the Grid’s layout:

 Preview window – Its main goal consists on changing the way that Grid is organized. The
above figure represents the default Grid’s organization. Using that organization you
would get a Grid analysis for each Target. Each Grid would be organized first by Day and
then by Channel and in curves you would have all selected audience variables. However
you can easily change this by using the “Items” dialog placed in the right side of the
screen. Let’s suppose you want to organize the Grid by Channel first instead of by Day.
All you have to do is to click over field Day, and then go to “Items” dialog and select the
field Channels;

123
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 “Fill First Variable” check box – The first audience variable you have selected will be
displayed with a filled curve while the others will be empty curves;
 “Time Band” check box – Inside each program’s cell will be displayed the respective
Time Band in which that program was broadcasted;

 “Sub Title” check box – It is used for seeing secondary description of programs (so
besides the Title of the program you can also choose to see its sub title);

 “Program area color” list box – The User has the freedom to select whatever color he
wants to apply for all program’s cells;

 “Empty area color” list box – The User has the freedom to select whatever color he
wants to apply for all empty cells (all cells that don’t contain any programs information).

12.1.1.3. Settings

The Grid Curve has by default certain settings that may be changed if the User wishes:

 “Slot split” list box – By default is split in Time Slots of 15 minutes;

 “Audience Split”26 list box – By default it represents the evolution minute-by-minute,

the audience values depend of this definition.

You can also choose “Grid is optimized” check box or “Show all events” (to see even the smallest
events shown).

124

BMW USER GUIDE

After defining all Grid parameters, you must click on “Next” button to select which dates you
want to analyze and finally click “OK” to run the Grid analysis.

In the following pages there are more detailed examples regarding the Grid analysis available
in BMW.

12.1.1.4. Band

By default the Grid curve represents the evolution of all broadcasted band (from 02h:00 to
26h:00) but it is possible to select another one. The User must select the Star Time and the End
time for the Broadcasted band which he or she wants to be analyzed in the Grid.

BMW USER GUIDE

12.1.2. Grid

BMW Grid analysis builds several daily audience curves for the selected channels and
complements it with the corresponding program’s grid. The BMW Grid is capable of displaying
several audience curves at the same time for each Channel, which represents a great
improvement. By default, the Grid is split into Time Slots of 15 minutes but it possible to change
this.

BMW Grid is a very flexible grid, with several functionalities (already described) that turn it into
a more intuitive and attractive Grid analysis. BMW Grid displays a Scale ruler inside the Grid
itself, helping you to measure the audience variable that is represented by the curve.

12.1.2.1. Examples

1ST EXAMPLE

In this picture, we have an example of one BMW Grid. According to the parameters previously
defined this Grid presents the following:
 Audience curves (rat%, shr%, rch%), 2 program variables (rat’000,
 Tvr’000)
 Filters: programs, breaks and auto promotions; level 2

126
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 The first curve (rat%) is filled and Background color: blue
 Audience split the same as Slots (15 minutes)
 Legend dialog box showing the three audience variables (enable after run the analysis
and choose this option with the right mouse button)

You can see that programs are identified with white color; breaks and auto promotions with
yellow color. By default, BMW will show you, in first place, variables and graphics for the first
selected target. To see variables and graphics for other targets, you must click on the
corresponding sheet’s name placed at the window’s bottom.

Note5: The audience values are depending of this definition. To obtain the audience values
corresponding to the slots splits defined you must active the “Same as slots” check box.

2nd EXAMPLE

This Grid example is quite similar to the above example, but it uses a different layout
organization (first by channel and second by date) as the figure shows.

5 Right now only the Level filter is working properly in all Grid Analysis.

127
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Indeed, if you look carefully you will notice that Headers are now different from the standard
formats. Each curve refers now to the selected Targets (as the Legend confirms). Now for each
program you have the audience values displayed by all the selected Targets.

By default it’s showing, in first place, curves and respective program’s grid for the first selected
variable. To see the curves and program’s grid for other variables, you must click on the
corresponding sheets name that is in the bottom of the window. On the window’s top you have
Channels. So now you have a Grid organized first by Channel and then by Day, instead of the
usual organization Day – Channel.

12.1.3. Classic Grid

128
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The Classic Grid builds a table, split in time slots, with the daily audience values for each
program (Programs variables) and also for each time period (Audience variables), if you choose
so. The next figure shows an example of Classic Grid. As you can see, it shows daily rat% & shr%
values for each program, and also rat% and shr% values for each time slot of 15 minutes.

12.1.3.1. How to configure a Grid analysis

After running any type of Grid Analysis, you will find several options by right clicking the mouse,
allowing to change some characteristics of the Grid output and to get deeper information.
Doing this it will open a dialog box like the following one.

129
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 Zoom in/out Time Band – Click here to increase/decrease the precision of the Grid. By
default, the Grid is divided in periods of 10 minutes. The
“Zoom in” option will increase the precision of the Grid, until a time periods amplitude
of 1 minute. If you click on the “Zoom out” option it will decrease the Grid’s detail, i.e.,
it will increase the time periods amplitude until 1 hour;

 Zoom in/out Scale – This option allows you to change your Grid scale. The “Scale in”
option will define a lower maximum value for the graphic values while “Scale out” will
define higher maximum value for the graphic;

 Resize column to fit – This option allows the adjustment of columns to fit;

 New View – If you select some parts (clicking the right mouse button) of the
Grid and then click this option you will get a Grid analysis just for those selected parts;

 Send to – This option allows you to transfer the information in the cells you have
selected in the grid to other analysis such as the Teleview, Preview, Switching grid,
Switching table, Curve and Grid detail. Therefore, when you select to send that period
in the grid to the Grid detail, for example, it will open a Grid detail analysis referring to
that period in analysis. You have this same option in many of the other graphic analysis;
 Info – This option provides feedback regarding the selections you have made for your
Grid;
 Show Legend – It opens a pop up window with legend information regarding the
audience variables;
 Add to Menu – You are able to add this analysis into the Reports menu;
 Redefine Query/Layout/Dates – Allows you to reconfigure your Grid’s

130
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
Query and Layout as well as to choose another Date to run it;
 Export – You are able to export this Grid as a picture file.

12.1.3.2. How to configure the Grid Detail output

This option allows you to analyze the contents for one or more time periods and for one or
more channels (depending on your selection) with a higher detail. This option identifies not
only the events presented, but also all the audience values for each event and target. You can
also see other entities, such as Hour, Date, Length, Type and Level.

131
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
As you see, the Grid Detail output is identical to a Report output, explained previously. It
displays one table containing detailed audience information regarding all Events (programs,
breaks and auto-promotions) found for the selected Grid parts.

12.2. Picasso

The Picasso is basically a graphic SMH analysis6. The graphic is made of several vertical lines
next to each other, where each line represents an Household audience behavior during a
selected period and the Household are grouped in ordered percentage ranks (each have the
same number of Household) taking into account the average time viewing of each Household
for that period or, in other words, the fidelity of each Household to that period.
In the Layout you can define the ranges of “Percentage” ranks. Choose one of the predefined
values.

12.2.1. How to build a Picasso

12.2.1.5. 11.2.1.5 Example

An example of a Picasso analysis is showed in the next figure. In this example we have chosen
to analyze period 20:00-21:00 on Star Plus:

 Base Query:

 Channels – Star Plus, Colors, Zee TV and Sony Television;

 Targets – Universe

 Layout:

 Show All Colors;

 Show Percentage from – 50% to 100%.

 Settings:

 Slot split – 00:15:00 (20:00:00 till 21:00:00 with Slot splits of 15minutes).

136
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 Time Band – From 20:00:00 till 21:00:00.

Each color line has associated Household. Those colors lines represent graphically the
Household and their behavior during period 20:00-21:00, in Channel Star Plus,
i.e., shows the Channel where the Household are in each minute of the period
20:00-24:00.
Each colour7 represents a Channel. In the Indian example the blue colour concerns Star Plus,
the Pink is Color, the Green is Sony Television, the Brown is Zee Tv, the grey represents the
remaining channels8 29 and the white represents TV ON/OFF (those Household that are not
seeing TV).

The analysis is ordered ascendant by fidelity to the Channel of the analyzed program (“XYZ
Show”), i.e., starts (at left) by Household less loyal (less permanent time at Star Plus) and finish
(at right) with the most loyal Household to Star Plus (the last bands are completely blue, i.e.,
represents the Household that saw “XYZ Show” in his whole).

In this example this means that for program “XYZ Show”, from Star Plus, the time slot 20:15:00
should be interpreted the following way:

Looking for the last two columns of Star Plus, for example, we will see that almost 20% of the
Household are loyal to that Channel. More, they are faithful since 20:00:00, approximately.

If you don’t activated Show All Colors, the result will be the following one.

12.3. Ratings Curves

The Ratings Curve uses a very flexible interface where the User can set a large set of parameters
to be analyzed in one single window. This will generate multidimensional graphics that will
meet the most demanding requests.

The Ratings Curve analysis performs the evolution minute by minute9 for audience variables
during the broadcast band and complements it with a programs audience table. In one single
analysis you can compare different audience variables curves for several targets, channels,
days…

12.3.1. How to build a Ratings Curve

To start building one Ratings Curve you must select the respective option, as shown by the
figure.

9 It is the default split, but you can change it to a higher split trough the Settings option.

138

BMW USER GUIDE

This will open the Ratings Curve query where the User must define what he/she wants to
analyze (parameters) and how he/she wants to display it (layout).

12.3.1.1. Base Query

At the bottom of the screen the User has several buttons where he should select:

 Regions, Channels and Targets;

 Program variables – To be listed in the Event’s table;
 Audience variables – To be displayed in the Curve;
 Filters – To define the type and level of Events you want to see displayed in the Event’s
table;
 Threshold – This list box allows selecting the BTVV to be used.

139

BMW USER GUIDE

All the above selections can be saved in a Template file for future usage10. There’s no limit to
the number of selections, the User may select as many parameters as he wants to.

12.3.1.2. Layout

The User can define his own Layout in a very flexible way. He decides how he wants to see the
Ratings Curve, meaning, how the entities will be showed in the Ratings Curve window.

The default layout has the following organization:

 Audience Variable placed at window’s header;
 Day placed at window’s top;
 Channels represented in curves;
 Targets placed at window’s bottom.

10 Base Query templates are shared between Grid, Ratings Curve and Switching analysis.

140
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

The User can change this organization according to his needs. To do this he must click the
mouse over the entity whose position he wants to change (the Items dialog will appear on the
right side of screen) and select (mouse clicking) the item that will replace it.

There’s only a small restriction that User must know before making all definitions in
Base Query: any entity placed at the window’s header will accept one parameter only. So in this
default Layout you could only have one audience variable selected, otherwise “Select only one
audience variable” will be shown, preventing you to run the Ratings Curve. As always, the
Layout can be saved as a template file, for future usage.

After you have set all definitions click on the “Next” button to choose which days you want to
analyze. Finally click “Ok” and BMW will run the Ratings Curve analysis, as the following example
shows.

12.3.2. How to configure the Ratings Curve analysis

After running any type of Ratings Curve Analysis, you will find several options. Some of them
are immediately visible in the output:

Increase/decrease Ratings Curve scale;

Re-establish the default scale;

Hide, unhide, maximize Channel’s screen. This one is very useful to focus the attention
in just one specific screen;

Switch to another Target.

Other options are enabled using the right mouse button:

 Select Band – Allows selecting a rank from the layout with the cursor. After doing this
you can zoom in this rank to see this period more specified;
 Zoom in/Zoom out – To see the Y Axis scale bigger or shorter;
 Info – To see displayed the analysis information with all the selected items;
 Show legend – It will show the legend for each channel curve;
 Add to menu – Adds this analysis to the menu;
 Redefine – Query, Layout and Days. To redefine your analysis and the days in which to
run it;
 Send to – Teleview, Preview, Grid, Switching Grid, Figure Table, Grid detail. Send the
selected “area” of your analysis to any of these other graphic modules.

12.4. Switching Analysis

Switching analysis studies the migrations between Channels. So besides knowing the audiences
of each time slot you can also become aware of the source of the audience, this means, from
where the audience comes from. In other words it illustrates the Audience Transfer among
Channels. At present, it only gives you the audience gains from other Channels but very soon it
will also show the audience losses to other Channels.
There are two separated Switching analysis, each one having different utilities:

Switching Curve;
Switching Table.

12.4.1. Switching Curve

The Switching Curve presents a Programs Grid and complements it with a Bar Chart that
represents the audience transfer among Channels.

To start building one Switching Curve you must select the respective option form the Menu, as

12.4.1.2. Layout

Once again, the user has the freedom to change the layout’s appearance. First of all, switch the
order by which items are presented. Secondly, set colors for the
Programs area and also to the Empty area.

The available options are:

12.4.1.5. Example

The next figure demonstrates an example of a Switching Curve analysis. In this example we
defined the Time Band from 16:00:00 to 26:00:00.

149
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

As you see, it displays exactly the same output as it does for a Grid analysis but complemented
with Bars on the left side of column.

Each time slot has an associated bar. That bar represents graphically the audience source of
the Channel in column. In this case we have previously choose option Ins in Layout box.

Each Bar is painted with several colours. Each colour32 represents a Channel. In the Indian
example the blue colour concerns Star Plus, the Pink is Colors, the Brown is Zee TV, and grey
represents the remaining channels33.

In this example this means that for Channel Colors the bar of time slot 19:00:00 should be
interpreted the following way:

 The Pink part represents all Household who have stayed watching Channel Colors;
 The Blue part represents the Household who came from Channel Star Plus:;
 The Brown part represents the Household who came from Channel Zee TV;
 The Grey part represents the Household who came from other channels which are not
chosen in this analysis.

12.4.2. Figure Table

The Figure Table presents the exact values of the audience transfer among
Channels, so in other words it shows the corresponding values of the Bar Chart from the
Switching Curve.

To start building one Switching Figure Table you must select the respective option from the
Menu, as the figure shows.

150

This will open the Switching Table Query where the User must define the parameters to be
analyzed.

12.4.2.1. Base Query

The User must select which Regions, Channels and Targets he wants to analyze and also the
Threshold.

 Variables – Choose which variables to analyze. Now there are more available like the
TV OFF;

 Reference – Choose the channels which we want to study migration;

 Settings – Choose whether to show values in Thousands, show Bars with the values,
show Gains and Losses indicative arrows, show the Values, show Colors for the cells or
use a color Column parity;

 Aggregation – Choose whether to use aggregated values by Day or the Average.

You have the option to create your own Layout, defining the positions for Channels,
Targets, etc.

12.4.2.3. Settings

You can increase or decrease the size of time slots to see on the table. Select one of the
predefined from list box.

12.4.2.4. Band

It has exactly the same functionality and purpose as in Switching Curve. After establishing all
definitions, click the “Next” button to select the days you want to analyze on the Calendar

154

window, and finally click “Finish” to run the Figure Table or “Back” to change previous
definitions on Query, Settings or Band.

The next figure shows an example of a Figure Table analysis.

In this example we have choose:

Base Query:

 Channels – Star Plus, Colors and Zee TV;

 Targets – Universe.

Layout:

 Variables – Others, Total, Stayed, Ins, Outs, TV ON, TV OFF, Total ins, Total outs, Flow;
 Settings – Bars, Gains and Loses, Values.

Settings:

 Slot split – 00:15:00 (from 18:00:00 till 24:00:00 with Slot splits of 15 minutes).

Band: from 18:00:00 till 24:00:00.

As you see it builds as many Columns as the number of selected Channels. For each

155
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
Channel it creates the column “Total”, this column regards that Channel. The column “Stayed”
presents the audience from the Household who have turned on the TV on the respective
Channel. And also the columns regard the other Channels you have selected which in this Band
changed to this Channel.

Let’s focus for instance on Colors column to analyze its audience source. For instance you can
see that for row 19:45:00 the column “Total” shows 7.29%. This represents the total audience
(rat% or rch%) for those targets at 19:59:59- 20:00:00. This audience source is the following:

 The column “Stayed” presents the audience from the Household who kept watching
Colors at 19:59:59- 20:00:00. As you see on the table that value was 4.58%;
 The column “Total Ins” shows at 19:59:59- 20:00:00 the new audience, it was 2.27%;
 The column “Total outs” shows at 19:59:59- 20:00:00 the audience from the Household
who left Colors, it was 0.65%;
 The column “Flow” shows at 19:59:59- 20:00:00 the difference between Total Ins and
Total Outs, it was 2.07%;
 The columns “Star Plus-Ins” and “Zee TV -Ins” present the audience from the Household
who were watching TV on those channels and switched to Colors at 19:59:59- 20:00:00
and were 0.94% and 0.11% respectively;
 Therefore “Total” audience value is always equal to the values sum from the remaining
columns.
As usual some already familiar options to configure this analysis are available.

12.4.2.5. Example

For example, let’s analyze the values from Time Slot 21:00:00 - 21:15:00.

 Column Colors:

156
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
 Line Total = 3.14 – Rat% of Total Household who were present in Channel Colors in
period 21:14:59 – 21:15:0034;

 Line Colors (Stayed) = 2.24 – Rat% of Household that were watching at 21:00:00-
21:00:01 and remain in Channel Colors at 21:14:59 – 21:15:00;

 Line Star Plus = 0.04 – Rat% of Household that were seeing Star Plus at 21:00:00-
21:00:01 and are present in Channel Colors at 21:14:59 –21:15:00. So they changed
from Star Plus to Colors;

 Line TV ON = 0.36 – Rat% of Household who were not watching TV at 21:00:00 but
switched on TV to Colors Channel between 21:14:59 – 21:15:00. So they are the
Household who turned on TV to Colors channel;

 Line TOTAL = Line Colors + Line Star Plus + Line Zee TV + Line TV ON + Line Others.

Column STAR PLUS:

 Line Total = 4.93 – Rat% of Total Household who were present in Channel Star Plus in
period 21:14:59 – 21:15:00;

 Line Star Plus (Stayed) = 2.27 – Rat% of Household that were watching Star Plus at
21:00:00-21:00:01 and remained on Star Plus at 21:14:59 – 21:15:00;

 Line Colors = 1.12 - Rat% of Household that were seeing Colors at 21:00:00-21:00:01
and are present in Channel Star Plus at 21:14:59 –21:15:00. So they changed from
Colors to Star Plus;

 Line TV ON = 0.59 – Rat% of Household who were not watching TV at 21:00:00 –

21:00:01 but are now watching Star Plus at 21:14:59 – 21:15:00. So they turned on TV
in Star Plus;

 Line TOTAL = Line Colors + Line Star Plus + Line Zee TV + Line TV ON + Line Others.

12.5. Batch analysis

12.5.1. How to build a Batch analysis

The “Search” button allows you to see all the multimedia files you have available in the
defined path, for the selected period in analysis. All these options make TeleView a very
flexible and user-friendly analysis capable of adapting to different analysis scenarios.

 Options – Here you can choose between some options that are available, such as:
o Stop playing when Idle;
o Show Subtitle;
o Working Mode – Advanced or Easy Mode

 Send to – This option allows you to transfer the information to other analysis such as
the Teleview, Preview, Grid, Switching grid, Curve, Classic grid, Figure table and Reports.

187

o Audience Profile
o Target Profile
• Template
After defining the Base Query and the Band, to activate any analysis you should click over it in

Player
This option allows seeing images for each viewed channel in a specific time period, allowing
simultaneous viewing of frames from broadcasted events and containing schedules of
programs for several channels.

If you want to Play some channel/program, there are specifics buttons for that just below the
images.

189
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
As well as the frames for all channels you can also see the clock showing the minute chosen
by you. You can access the player properties through the button, which is on top right side
of the screen.

Analyzing each frame individually you can find information regarding that specific channel,
event and minute. The next figure is an example of a channel frame.

Above image of the selected channel and event you will see the rat%, rch% and shr% of that
event and the rat% and shr% of that specific minute. In brackets () you will find the positive
or negative variation between the rat% and shr% of that minute and of the whole
event.
Each frame presents several options:

 (Switch Window Mode) – To access the program Schedule of each channel. Here
you will be able to see the start time of the event, its level, its name and its respective
rat% and shr%. By clicking on any given event you will also be able to check its
respective rat% or shr% graphically on the curve.
190
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 (Events Window) – Use this to access the program Schedule of each channel but on
a separate window. This way you can choose an event from the grid and check its rat%
and shr% on any given minute, compare it with the rat% and shr% of the whole event
and still see the corresponding frame. You can also sort by Start, Event, rat% and shr%
items on the header of the Schedule and rearrange them, by clicking on their names.

This view is helpful because it allows you to pick any program from the Schedule, select it on
the frame, drag it and drop it on the Curve for closer analysis.

 (Quick Export) – To export the video frame from that minute in that channel to the
clipboard.

191
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

You can choose from different styles of layout and get a preview of the export. You can also
“Copy” the exported frame.
Audience
This is the heart of the Teleview and the main graphic interface through which the user will
define all the other analysis of the Teleview.

 (Audience Curve) – It is the default curve when starting the Teleview and its icon
are represented on the upper left corner.

192
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
It consists of a line chart representing the events grid or any selected event and it shows the
user the rat% and shr% of each channel throughout a predefined Time Band.
The user is able to choose to analyze any point in the curve using the cursor (the two lines
that intersect) to place the Slider (the red vertical line) on that point, thus selecting it. By
dragging the Slider down the curve you can get a dynamic perspective of the evolution of the
Curve throughout the Time Band. You can also mark a reference point on the curve by placing
a Breakpoint on it.
Any point marked in the Curve will be also selected for analysis in all the other Teleview
analysis: Player, Audience Profile, Audience Chart and Channel Switching. The Curve itself can
represent the rat% or shr% of the Audience Variables.
On the left top you can see the pre-defined time split and the period being analyzed. To the
left of the chart you have five buttons that can change the looks of the chart:

o (Draw Style) – It allows you to redefine the style of the curve.

These options can be very helpful sometimes, especially when in a “zoom up” area is
selected. To make a zoom the user has to press the Shift key at the same time it’s moving the
Slider. In some cases the “Squares” graphic option can be helpful to determine more exactly
the points in the curve where the audience lost or gained.

o (Typologies) – It shows the colors representing the different typologies of each

event.

193
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

o (Events) – It opens a pop-up that will allow you to choose how to display the
inserts of each event for the selected channel on the curve.

 Show Events on Top – Show the events on Top of the curve

 Show Events Area – Show the Area of the Events

 Hide Events – Hide the Events name

194
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

o (Other events) – It shows the Events Grid of all the other competing channels.

o (Fill) – It fills the curve of the selected channel (rat% or shr%) for an easier
analysis

You can use all these options together to create a more complex and interactive kind of
analysis.

195
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

Another very useful analysis the Curve provides is the option to analyze a singled out event
from the Events Grid. To do this, you need to choose an event from the Events Grid. After
this, the event is displayed on the player. Just “pick” the program’s name below the frame
and “drop” it directly unto the curve. The whole curve now will show the entire duration of
that event and its evolution in rat% and shr%.

By using the buttons on the left you will be able to analyze this specific event just like you

 Undo Zoom – Zooms back

 No Zoom – Zooms back to the start
 Trace Second – The Breakpoint will trace the Curve second by second
 Trace Split – The Breakpoint will trace the Curve by the chosen Time Split
 Trace Breakpoints – The Breakpoint will trace the Curve by the Breakpoints created
 Select Time Band – When pressing the Shift key and dragging the cursor it will zoom in
horizontally, across the Time Band
 Select Scale – When pressing the Shift key and dragging the cursor it will zoom in
vertically, across the Scale
 Select Both – When pressing the Shift key and dragging the cursor it will zoom in both
directions, across the Time Band and Scale
 Insert Breakpoint – Creates new breakpoints
 Remove Breakpoints – Removes all the new breakpoints created
 Send to… – Allows you to transfer the information you have selected in the curve to
other analysis such as the Preview, Switching grid, Switching table, Curve, Grid and
Reports analysis. Therefore, when you opt to send that period in the curve to a
Report, for example, it will open a Report analysis referring to that period in analysis

You can also export your Curve analysis to the clipboard, using the button , in the header.

If you want to see and change some of the properties, just click on the button to see the
next screen.

14.4. Switching Curve

The second curve is called Switching and it’s represented by the icon, on the upper left
corner. It allows you to visualize the migrations between Channels. You can become aware of
the audience source of a specific channel, this means from where does the audience come. In

198

BMW USER GUIDE
other words it illustrates the Audience Transfer from one channel, the one chosen in the
Player, to other channels in the analysis and vice versa.
In the header of this curve you are able to choose with which channel you are comparing the
selected channel (Zee TV, in this example) with:

You have two distinct types of Switching curve, selectable in the Tabs above
. These are the Switching Flow curve and the Ins and Outs Switching
curve.
The Switching Flow curve shows you the evolution, the average of the audience transfer flow
of the selected channel, related to what other channel you are comparing it with. What is
above the “Zero” line (0.0) is gained audience and below that is lost audience.

The Switching Ins and Outs curve, on the other hand, shows you the evolution of both the
audience gained and lost to the other channel. The green curve represents the gained
audience and the red curve represents the lost audience.

Both these curves have buttons that will change the look of the curve and that most times
produce similar results in both of them.

 – It allows you to redefine the style of the curve

 – It shows the colors representing the different typologies of each event

 – It opens a pop-up menu that will allow you to display the inserts of each event
for the selected channel on the top of the curve

201
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE

 – It shows the Events Grid of all the other competing channels

 – The Accumulation option simply draws a curve that is accumulating the INS (and
another for the OUTS) registered in each minute (or other split you may define) for
the selected channel, during the selected period.
The values are shown in the green curve for INS (red curve, for Outs) above the 0 axis.
All values are absolute values

202
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
In the same way if you were in tab “Flow” then the Accumulation draws a curve that
is accumulating the Flow registered in each minute (or other split you may define) for
the selected channel, during the selected period

 – Draws a curve that represents the Averaged Flow (or INS or OUTS) of all days
selected in calendar for the selected channel, for each band of 1 minute (or other split
you may define) during the selected period of the day.
The values are shown in the light blue curve and will be positioned above 0 axes (if
average of flow is positive) or below (if average of flow is negative).
In case of Ins and Outs case, the values are shown in the green slashed ( - - - - ) curve
above the 0 axis (for Ins) and in the red slashed ( - - - - ) curve below the 0 axis (for
Outs).
Note that if you have just one day, the average is constant, i.e., it’s always the same
value. And for more than one day, it will compare the first day with the average of the
remaining chosen days. In Flow case, the values are shown in the dark blue curve and
will be positioned above 0 axes.

 – Actually it isn’t a real St.Deviation like we know it in mathematic. In this case it

simply measures the difference or distance between the flow of the selected day and
the average of the flow, and it’s shown in the orange curve will that be positioned
above 0 axis (if difference is positive) or below (if difference is negative). For example
suppose your flow for a specific band and channel in the selected day is - 20% and the
average flow for that same band and channel in remaining chosen days is 10%. Then it
means that your flow is ( -20 % -10%) = -30%, which means here 30 points below the
average flow and that will the value shown in the StDeviation curve. If we applied the
real StDeviation then all values would be positive measure this var. ups everything to
the square and only measures distances in absolute terms, and in this particular case
you’d not have the same easy perception that the flow is below the average flow
because the distance would be positive.

The same exact approach applies regarding INS and OUTS.

14.5. Chart
This option, which is closely linked to the grid, allows the user to analyze at any point in the
grid the audience, switching values or profile of the audience of the selected channel or
program and compare it with the other channels in the analysis.
You have four types of Analysis Charts: Audience, Switching, Profile and Target Profile which
we will explain next.
All these charts share four common options buttons, available on the upper right corner,
below the header, that will change the look of the analysis:

 (Breakpoint) – It will show values of audience, switching, etc., for the breakpoints
you may previously have defined in the Curve

 (Curve) – It will show values of audience, switching, etc., for the entire time
period represented on the Curve (it can be the whole Time Band or a zoomed period)
 (Event) – It will show values of audience, switching, etc., only for the event
currently selected on the Curve, from the channel in analysis
 (Split) – It will show values of audience, switching, etc., only for the minute
currently selected on the Curve
The User can see more buttons:

 (Properties) – Using this button in the header, you can see the Profile Properties
analysis

14.6. Audience
205
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
It is the default chart when starting Teleview and it’s represented by the icon, on the
upper left corner. This option allows the user to analyze, through a bar chart, the Audience of
the Event or of the Minute at any point in the Time Band.
It presents a bar for each channel (represented by its respective color), allowing comparing all
variables between the channels you choose. Depending on which of the previously explained
audience buttons is selected, the Audience Chart will give you different results.

If you choose to analyze the Split you will be able to see the rat% or shr% (for example)
for each channel at any specific minute as you goes along the Grid.

The dotted horizontal line represents program rat% or shr% of the current program
broadcasted by the channel you are comparing. On the top you can see what the point in
analysis is.

If you choose to analyze the Event you will be able to see the rat%, shr% for each channel
and for each respective program. In this analysis the bars represent the rat%, shr% for the
entire program.

The dotted horizontal line represents the rat%, shr% of the current program broadcasted by
the channel you are comparing, at that specific point in the Time Band. On the top you can
see the name of the program currently being broadcasted by the channel being compared.

You can toggle the appearance of the bars, vertically, horizontally and 3D with the button

14.7. Switching Chart

This option allows the user to analyze, through a chart, the switching behavior (in % or #)
from and to each channel, or in other words, the variation in rating at a given moment.
This feature allows you to “see” the percentage (%) or number (#) of viewers that changed
from one channel to another in any chosen point in the Time Band (Split), during a specific
event (Event), during the whole period in the curve (Curve) or in a specific breakpoint
(Breakpoint).

Each channel is represented by a circle of a different color (grey is for “others” and darker
grey is for “Total TV”) and each has its respective legend over it. On the circles at the left you
will see right below the circle the initial rating (% or #), on the first second of each channel
and on the circles at the right you will see right below the circle the ratings for each channel
at the end of the period in analysis, in the last second.
On the circle at the middle-top you will see right above the circle the initial rating (% or #) on
the first second of Reference Channel, and right below the you’ll see the rating in the last
second of Reference Channel.

207
Powered by MARKDATA
BMW USER GUIDE
These are the values represented in yellow. The size of the circles depends on these
numbers.
The values represented in white characterize the amount value that the reference channel
gained (at the left), Ins, and the values lost to each channel (at the right), Outs, during that
time period or specific event. Highlighted in the centre of the chart you have the difference
between the ratings gained and lost, the Flow.
If you choose to analyze the Event Switching you will be able to see the % or # of viewers
switching from each channel during this specific event of the selected channel.

On the top you can see the name of the program currently broadcasted by the channel being
compared and its length. In the Event Switching the viewer switching is analyzed for the
entire length of the event.
If you choose to analyze Band Switching you will be able to see the % or # of viewers
switching from each channel at this chosen point in the Time Band.

On the top you can see what time period is being analyzed.

208

BMW USER GUIDE
On Curve Switching, as before, you are able to choose the width of the Time Band and choose
to analyze a part of the Curve you have selected (with the “shift” key).

You will notice that on the Tabs above, you have another choice of analysis. You can choose
to have a “Summary” analysis and it simply summarizes the total Audience transfer from the
Split, Event, Curve or Breakpoint of the channel in analysis and compares it with all the
remaining channels in the analysis.

To the left of the Channel Switching chart you have five buttons that can chart’s looks:

 (Thousands/Percentage) – It displays the switching values either in percentage (%),
or absolute values (#)
 (Others) – It introduces or eliminates the “others” channel into the switching
analysis
 (TV On/Off)– It introduces or eliminates the “TV off” channel into the switching
analysis. “TV off” represents those viewers who are not watching TV
 (Animate) – It enables the motion of the arrows, giving a more dynamic view to
the analysis
 (Create Behavior Target) – It enables you to select Household to create Behavioral
Targets

14.8. Profile Chart

This option allows the user to analyze the profile of the audience of any given channel or
program at any point in the grid.
After choosing the channel or program you wish to analyze you will be able to see in the
Audience Profile window a bar chart with the corresponding Profile (prf%).

By clicking on TeleView, it will open a query like the following one where you must define
“Base Query”, “Setting” and “Band”.

How to configure the Preview analysis

Much like the Teleview, after defining the variables of your analysis in the Base Query and
Band, you can still adjust the Preview analysis to your needs through the Preview Header
options:

The options on this header bar are basically the same as in the Teleview Header bar with a
few exceptions. As in the Teleview, you can choose whether to analyze the Competition
between the set of channels you selected or to analyze the Evolution of one specific channel
for one day or throughout several days.
In the Preview analysis you can also choose to analyze the Performance of a channel
throughout a specific day. This is set as the standard analysis.
Here is an Analysis of the Evolution of one Channel for one day.
