Dear Prof. Baird,

I am sending you this email regarding my service learning over this summer semester in
your English 2100 Technical Writing course.

Initially, service learning scared me. I thought that I would get stuck and that the service
learning requirement would stop me from finishing my degree. Having the service
learning requirement taken care of in class with our Community Partner projects was
very comforting and beneficial to me. My expectations changed from viewing service
learning as a scary obstacle towards graduation to a very doable and satisfying project.
This change in my expectations was a result of understanding what service learning is.

Communication was difficult in our service learning project. I learned a lot about
communicating through it, but it was definitely a challenge. Our community partner
would reply at odd hours, I would never be cc’ed or bc’ed on any of the emails, and
would have to request that content from Zachary. I didn’t think that I would have to
request this information, as I usually am simply given it, so I turned that challenge into a
learning opportunity. In the future, I may not receive all necessary data in the workplace,
but now I understand how to request the information that I need in order to be
successful.

Sincerely,

Luke Cobabe
