Introduction
To use this finished iGreetings product, there are seven facets (detailed in the following
pages) in which you can sort the medium, whether it is an image, audio file, or a combination of
both. The recipient, occasion, device, and holiday pick lists are in alphabetical order with an
“other” class at the end, should the medium not belong in any of the listed classes. The medium
facet is broken into a notated taxonomy with classes for images and audio files. There is room
for growth if you find that a new class needs to be created to organize the digital items. Since
there may be some differences in the way someone describes the tone/mood of a card, the
tone/mood facet has been expanded into synonym rings to help when classifying the items.

Report of experience/Feedback request from peers
This project was a great way to get experience with taxonomies and the different ways
they can be structured. Knowledge Organization Systems have always been somewhat confusing
to me, and when I first looked at this project, I felt overwhelmed. Having it separated into chunks
each week made it easier, and it helped me understand the process involved in developing the
vocabularies.
One of the things I struggled with was the idea of seeing this from the designers’
perspectives. I started out thinking of categories of cards as if I were going down the aisles in
Hallmark, which was helpful to begin. However, it kept me thinking from the point of view of a
card sender, rather than someone organizing digital items, so when I would choose a facet or
complete a pick list, I would have to go back through and put myself in the mindset of the
designers.
Another difficulty (which I think a lot of us faced) was how broad or specific to be. For
example, the Holiday facet made me wonder if I should choose some of the most widely
celebrated holidays, or if I should include as many as I could find.
My question for peers for feedback deals with the Language facet. Obviously, I limited my
pick list. Do you think the languages I chose are sufficient for a project like this from the designer
point of view? If not, how many would you recommend including?
My other question for my peers is more of a general question about the entire project.
After completing your project, are there any facets that you think I should have included instead
of some that I used? If so, which ones would you recommend omitting?
