Gil “Sorts” of Numbers Purpose: to use the attributes of numbers as a basis for classification Skills: following directions, cooperating, using oral and written language skills Mathematical Skills: knowledge of numbers and their different attributes, ability to use a ‘Venn diagram for sorting by attribute Materials: Number Sort activity sheets, one set per group (pages 35-38); blank activity sheets, several per group with extras available (page 39); pencils Procedure: Students will work in groups to discuss numbers and complete Number Sort Activity Sheets. They can then create their own number sorting activity sheets to give to other groups. Each number sorting activity sheet should have an “answer key” which can be given to the teacher. Students will then come together in a large group to compare and discuss answers and trade their own versions of number sorting for other groups to solve. To Simplify: Model the whole procedure in a large-group setting, leading students through the steps of completing one of the Number Sort activity sheets. To Expand: Encourage students to experiment with a diagram that has four overlapping circles. Evaluation: Evaluate the development of cooperative skills by observing how students interact with other members of the group. Were they able to make decisions, assign tasks, keep order, give positive reinforcement, etc.? Evaluate cognitive skills by noting the ease or difficulty students had in using the activity sheets and diagrams for the purpose of classifying the attributes of numbers. Processing: Have each group tell about their experiences and discuss the process with the whole class. ‘Ask such questions as these: * How did you decide which numbers represented which attributes? Where did you look to make sure? * What was the easiest part of this activity? The hardest part? Remember to use anecdotal record forms to keep a record of participation for each student for each activity. 34 © Teacher Created Materials, Inc.
