Injection Moulding

Introduction

• Injection moulding is a manufacturing technique for making parts from thermoplastic and
thermosetting plastic materials in production.

• Molten metal or plastic is injected at high pressure into mould, which is the inverse of product
shape.

• The moulds are usually made by steel or aluminium and precision machined to form the
features of desired parts.

• Here, the parts are mainly separated as core part and cavity part.

• One shot is a manufacture of single part in a moulding machine.

Types of moulding

1. Reaction injection moulding (RIM)

2. Die casting
3. Plastic injection moulding

• Reaction moulding is similar to plastic injection moulding except thermosetting polymers are
used, which requires a curing reaction to occur at the end.

• The two parts of the polymer are mixed together under high pressure into a mixture.

• Then the mixture is injected under low pressure into the mould.

• The mixture is sit in the mould long enough to expand and cure.

• If reinforcing agents are added to the mixture, then the moulding is reinforced reaction injection
moulding, and some of the agents are mica and glass fibers.

The most commonly used RIM material is polyurethane
