Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Assumption: August 15th marks one of the six Holy Days of Obligation in the United States.
On the Solemnity of the Assumption we celebrate Mary’s being taken, body and soul, into
heaven. Mary’s Assumption, as dogmatically proclaimed by the Church, gives to her the su-
preme honor of resting in peace with the Heavenly Father, Her Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
In a life so well lived, so dedicated to God’s will, so perfectly obedient, Mary, the Mother of
God was preserved from the corruption of sin and raised to eternal glory in the heavenly King-
dom. Mary’s Assumption is a glimpse of the promise of salvation offered to every believer.
Mass Schedule for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: 9:00am & 7:00pm

So Be Imitators of God, As Beloved Children, and Live in Love – The

call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to “be imitators of God”
gives us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we should ex-
pect of ourselves and others. Don’t we expect God to be patient, compas-
sionate, loving, merciful and wise? Don’t we trust that God will provide for
our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and
strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will
know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it
as beloved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always
easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and sup-
port in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and chil-
dren, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as
we build up the Kingdom of God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire
us to live in love as a sisters and brothers in God our Father. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org
to learn more and to stay informed.

Calendar Planning
It’s that time again! We are asking representatives from all parish, school and inter
parish organizations (ARCM, LOC, CMF, HOLY NAME, CHOIR, MADONNA,
K OF C, COLUMBIETTES, MAN UP, DINNER COMMITTEES etc.) to compile
their schedules for anything involving the usage of any of the St. Damien facilities
for the coming period beginning September 2018 through August 2019. We will be coordi-
nating our calendar so that there is no overlap of building usage. Please drop off, mail, call, or
email your information to Peggy (stdamienromeop@verizon.net) at the Parish Office by Au-
gust 24th.

DIOCESAN CHOIR AUDITIONS

Auditions for the 2018-2019 Diocesan Choir season will soon be held. The Choir
under the direction of Fr. Jim Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pitts-
burgh, sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul’s Cathedral throughout the
year. Currently there openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. In addi-
tion to being good singers, potential members must be capable sight-readers due to a limited
rehearsal schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St. John Capistran
Church in Upper St. Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Di-
ocesan Music Office (412-456-3042) before August 21.

THOUGHTS FROM REV My word and thought I would like to expound on and share is
GRACE!
As parishes who are moving closer to a time of change and hopefully new growth I believe we
need to look and identify the word GRACE:
Gratitude
Request for Light
Account of Actions and Attitudes
Chart your Course
Entreat God for Energy and Enthusiasm
Do we show our gratitude to God? Think about how many times God has provided for you,
helped you through moments of change. When we pray, one form of prayer is to listen so that
we can be made aware of How God is there to help and provide for us.
Do we hold on to the Light of Christ to guide us and help us understand as well as lead us
through those dark events and moments in our lives?
How do we show to others our Faith? Do our actions and attitudes offer others our Love,
Peace and Hope? Our Actions and Attitudes speak louder than words!
In charting our course for the future do we give things a chance, or try to be open? Prayer,
Trust and Faith are important for moving through life as each day is different and we can not
completely plan for everything! Moreover, do we apply the words of the Our Father and find
ourselves willing to forgive and ask for forgiveness to create a better world?
May we all have the Grace to Pray to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,
asking for strength and finding the source of energy, the understanding and openness to how
the mass changes can work given the reality of one less priest for the new parish grouping?

Magnificat Pittsburgh Prayer Breakfast

Ladies, come to the Magnificat Pittsburgh prayer breakfast on August 25, from 9am to Noon
at the Double Tree by Hilton, Cranberry Twp. Hear dynamic speaker Dr. Carol Razza who
will minister to you and tell her story of God’s work to free her from the lies that put her in a
place of fear and shame. Through God she broke free to live His purpose and plan for her.
She will remind you that the Father speaks freedom into our lives and that is our dwelling
place. Carol is a psychotherapist, author, and on faculty at a seminary in Florida. Cost of the
breakfast is $23. To register, call Kay, 724-772-6749 or Pam, 412-461-8906 or go to
www.magnificatpittsburgh.org. Registration deadline is August 17th.

Marriage can become an emotional roller coaster when one or both couples want to stop
the ride and get off. However, the Catholic Church has always held the sanctity of marriage in
the highest esteem and reminds us that it is a lifetime commitment.
But before you decide whether to continue living in an emotional desert or chuck the marriage
entirely, ask your spouse to attend a Retrouvaille weekend with you.
It might be the spark you need to get your relationship going again, and it has worked for
many other couples. The next Pittsburgh program is scheduled to start on September 7.
Please call contact Retrouvaille at 412-277-3434. More information is available at
