The Excel document can be used in two ways:

Option 1: Entering the data into the DATA ENTRY SHEET

If you decide to enter the data into this sheet then the calculations on how much fruit, vegetables,
oily fish, fat and NMES each participant is estimated to have consumed will be calculated
automatically and the final healthy diet score will be calculated for each participant in the “Score
calculation” tab, column FR. Have a look through the tabs and see how it works, this will help you
understand the calculations (which will be useful if you go for option 2).

Option 2: using the “Score calculation info”

All the information you need to calculate the healthy diet score yourself is presented in the “Score
calculation info” tab. Columns F to N show the gram associated with each SFFFQ item for each
frequency option. For example, if someone ticks that they have had Fruit 1-2 times a day this
equates to 120 grams of fruit a day. For 3 out of the 5 categories included in the diet score (fruit,
vegetables and oily fish) scores are assigned based on these specific SFFFQ items (highlighted in
green, blue and orange in the spreadsheet). Whether the intake is above a certain cut-off
determines the score they get assigned (column O to Q). Please note that the calculations given in
the columns O to Q add up all the frequency amounts (column F to N) when only one would actually
be ticked.

The calculations for fat and NMES are more complicated as we get these nutrients from the majority
of the different SFFFQ items. We have calculated the amount of fat and NMES in each of the
frequency options for each of the SFFFQ items (row 35 down). An example of the score calculations
for fat and NMES are in rows R and S.
