The Martian

“The Martian”

Science Situations:

Fertilizing crops with the own defecation of the human. This has been proven to

work, but still many scientists do not approve since it may not have the sufficient

nutrients.

Uses chemistry to create water to make the plants grow. This happens thanks to

the mixture of hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms which create water.

The communication between Nasa and Mark Watney. According to the movie

Mark Communicates with an old Pathfinder that he turns on and send messages

using a Hexadecimal alphabet.

The HAB explosion. The Habitat were mark lived exploded after their was a

puncture in the depressurized cabin so with this the pressure will no be able to

stabilize causing an explosion to happen.

The planning. Part of the movie is based on on timelines of how are they going

to get him this… in how much time… etc. This part the movie gets it correct sice

the dates and times the movie gives are actually true.
Science Fiction Situations:

Soil in Mars. According to NASA the soil in Mars could be used for farming, but

this has not yet been proven by NASA.

How Mark leaves Mars. It shows that the spaceship were Mark travels out of Mars

has no windows using math and science it is possible just that it has never been

proven.

The takeoff itself by Mark. The takeoff from mars many studies have actually

managed to hypothesize that leaving Mars is one of the main problems for

NASA right now, so how did the others ARES missions managed to return to Earth

including Mark’s crew.

Fiction Situations:

The storm that hits Mark Watney. According to Nasa the density of Mars

atmosphere is 1% as it is from the Earth so a 100 mph Earth storm would be

impossible in Mars due to the Atmosphere.

Radiation is another subject that in The Martian is not present, since Mark spends

most of the time in just a spacesuit and according to NASA spacesuits contain

radiation levels and in the Martian this was never shown.
